DONALD F. TURNER Proferror of Law Professor Turner holds an A.B. from Northwestern Univer- sity, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Harvard. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he took his LL.B. at Yale, where he was Editor-in-chief of the Yale Law fflllfllrll and received the Peres Prize for outstanding student con- tributions to Volumes 58 and 59. He graduated Clllll laude in 1950. Following a clerkship with Mr. Justice jackson, he was associated with a Waslliiugtoiu, D. C., law firm. Professor Turner teaches Government Regulation of Business and the Antitrust Seminar 1950, Yale. DETLEV F. VAGTS Arrirlfzfzl Proferror of Law Professor Vagts graduated from the Law School in 1951. 1-Ie practiced with the New York law firm of Cahill, Gordon, Rein- del and Ohl for several years, specializing in corporate and antitrust matters. He also spent three years in the Air Force, serving as a supply and intelligence oHicer and as StaH judge Advocate for a fighter group. From 1946 to 1949 he studied the continental systems of law at the University of Zurich and at the University of Paris. I-Ie was on leave of absence in 1947-19118 to serve with the legal division of the United States Military Occupation Government in Germany, During 1956-57, Professon von Mehren was a Ful- bright Research Professor at the University of Tokyo, Professor von Mehren is on the Board of Editors of the flmer- ifllll jolrrmll of Colflpfzmliife Lum and is the author of The Civil Law SyJ'le111.r.' ARTHUR E. SUTHERLAND Blf.l'.l'B.j' Pl'afc'.rJ0a' of Law Except for a year as legal secretary to Mr. Justice I-lolmes, Professor Sutherland practiced law in Rochester, New York, from 1926 until 1941. Then he served in the U. S. Army until 1945. I-le became Professor of Law at Cornell, and taught there until he became Professor of Law at Harvard in 1950. In 1956, Professor Sutherland held a Fulbright lectureship at Oxford. ,l-Ie edited G'0'l'Ul'l1ll76llf Under Lam, the published proceedings of the john Marshall Bicentennial at Harvard, of which he was chairman. His Rundell Lectures at Wfisconsin in 1955 were published as The Lum mul One Mau Among Many. Professor Sutherland has collaborated in caseboolcs on Constitutional Law and Commercial Law. He teaches Constitutional and Commercial Law and conducts seminars on Commercial Law, Federalism, and the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment. Born: l9tl2g Rochester. New York. THORNE Profe.r.r0r of Legal Hirlary Professor Thorne came to the Law School from the Yale Law School where he was Simeon E. Baldwin Professor of Legal His- tory and Librarian. During World War II, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. An authority on the law of medieval and Elizabethan Eng- land, Professor Thorne has written several papers on legal' historical subjects and has edited, among other works, A Dir- mfzrre U pon fbe Exporirimz and Umlermzfzdilzgi' of Smfzlfer. This year, Professor Thorne is teaching English Legal History and a seminar on the same subject. Born: 19073 New York, New York. B.A., 1921, College of the City of New Yorkg LLB., 1950. Harvard. DONALD THEODORE 'IRAUTMAN Pr0fe.r.r0r of Law After interrupting his college education in 1943 to serve in the Infantry and in Military Intelligence, Professor Trautman returned to Harvard in 1946 and enrolled in the seven year College-Law Program. Wlmile at the Law School, he was an editor of the Law Reniezzf. After graduation, Professor Trautman held a Sheldon Travel- ing Fellowship under which he traveled and studied in Europe. During the 1952 Supreme Court Term, he served as law clerk to Mr. Justice Frankfurter. Professor Trautman is a co-author of a Casebook on Account- ing. Professor Westliiill was connected with the Chicago Firm of Bell, Boyd, Marshall and Lloyd after graduation. This associa- tion was interrupted from 1951 to 1953 when he served with the Army in the Ofhce of the Judge Advocate General. Professor Wfesttall is co-author, with Profe:sor Casner, of Part 21, Construction Problems of A111ei'ic:111 Law of Property. I'le teaches Corporations I, Property II, and Real Estate Plan- ning. TOEPFER Vice Dean 111111 Direrlor of A1!111i,rri011.r Mr. Toepfer graduated from the Law School in 1947, after having had his course interrupted by four years of service with the Navy. Upon receiving his degree, he was appointed Secre- tary of the Placement Office, and a year later he was designated Assistant Dean and Director of Admissions. In 1952 he tool: charge of the School's Financial Aids program, combining this with his placement and admissions responsibilties, From 1956 to 1959 he served as Chairman of the Policy Committee of the Law School Admission Test. On january 1, 1956, Mr. Toepfer was appointed Secretary of the Law School. I-le served in that capacity and as Director of Admissions and Financial Aids until january, 1959, when he was named Vice Dean of the Law School and a member of the Faculty of Law. Harvard, RUSSELL HASTINGS PECK S'eci'el1u'y of line Law School Mr. Peck entered the Law School in 1947, after completing undergraduate work at Harvard which had been interrupted during the war by service in the United States Army. Upon graduation, he was appointed Assistant Dean, taking on, among other duties, publication of the L11111 Srbnol CdflI10gIl6 and Hnmlborzle for Ezlleriifg Sllllflfllff. For several years he was in charge of the Placement OHice. He became editor ot the I'Izll'1'tIl'df Law School Bulletin in 1956, and was appointed Secretary of the Law School in 1959.
