ERNEST JOSEPH BROWN Professor Uf Law After several years in private practice, Professor Brown began his academic career in 1937 at the University of Buffalo Law School. He continued to teach while maintaining his practice, which was devoted primarily to constitutional, tax, and corporate matters. He served in the Army during World War II and joined the faculty of the Law School in 19516. With Professors Freund, Howe, and Sutherland, he is editor of a Casebook on Constitutional Law, His teaching includes classes and seminars in taxation. Born: 19063 Lake Providence, Louisiana. CLARK BYSE Profeuzzr 0 Law Following his graduation from Wisconsin in 1958, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, Professor Byse became Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Law at the University of Iowa. In 1940, he began a five-year period of government and war service. ln 1946, he was named an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania and Professor of Law two years later. He came to the Law School in 1957. Fre- quently participating in alumni and American Bar Association activities, he is presently a member of the Bar Associations Standing Committee on Professional Ethics. In 1960, he published an Introduction to The flrial of lbe U-2, a transcript of the record of the trial of Francis Powers in Moscow. Professor Berman has also been active in promoting the teach- ing of law in the liberal arts curriculum. His book, The Namre and l:lHlCf.:0ll.f of Law, is used as a text in many colleges. He has served as a consultant to the General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force and the New York Law Revision Commission. After a year as an instructor here, he taught at the law schools of West Virginia and Duke University, with appointments as Visiting Professor at Yale and Chicago. After wartime service as Assistant and Associate General Counsel for Price in the O.P.A., Professor Cavers rejoined the Law School faculty. From 1951 through 1959, he also served as Associate Dean. He received his A.B, from Harvard in 1945, and after- wards served with the Field Artillery in France, Holland, Ger- many, and Japan. Wlaile a student at the Law School, he was President and Note Editor of the Law Review. Professor Chayes has been Legal Advisor to Governor Chester Bowles of Connecticut and Associate General Counsel of the Presiclent's Materials Policy Commission. For the October Term 1951, he was law clerk to Mr, justice Frankfurter. From 1952 until his appointment to the faculty, he was associated with the hrm of Covington 8: Burling in Washington, D. C. PETER FRANCIS COOGAN Lerllrrer an Law A partner in a downtown Boston law lirm, Mr. Coogan con- ducts courses in Creditors' Rights and is giving a course this summer in Financial Planning. Along with 19 years of practice, his career includes 10 years in business and teaching experience in both law and business. He has written and lectured extensively on Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code, which deals with secured trans- actions, and he is chairman of the National Bankruptcy Confer- ence's Committee on Liens.
