RUSSELL HASTINGS PECK Assistant Dean Mr. Peck entered the Law School in 1947, after completing undergraduate work which had been interrupted between 1942-1945 by service in the United States Army. Immediately after graduation he was appointed Assistant Dean, taking on among other duties the publication of the Law School Cata- logue and the Handbook for Entering Students. He is at pres- ent the Director of Placement at the Law School and editor of the Harvard Law Bulletin. In addition to his work at the Law School, Mr. Peck has served as a member ot the Board of Directors of the Cam- bridge Civic Association. He is now Treasurer of that asso- ciation. WILLIAM LANE BRUCE Assistant Dean Mr. Bruce graduated from the Law School in 1951, and practiced law in Providence, Rhode Island, with the law tirm of Edwards 8. Angell from 1951 until January, 1956. At that time he returned to the Law School to take up his present duties. He is a member of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bars. A native of Maine, he served during World War II with the Amphibious Forces of the Navy. Mr. Bruce is Assistant Secretary of the Harvard Law School Association and works primarily in the area of alumni rela- tions. Born: 19247 Lowell, Massachusetts. A.B., 1946 119481, LL.B., 1951, Harvard. JOHN A. KING, JR. Secretary of International Legal Studies After completion of his first year in the Law School, Mr. King served with the Intelligence Service of the United States Army in the Manhattan Engineering District, the Central In- telligence Agency, and at the atomic testing sites of Kawia- Iein and Bikini. He graduated from the Law School cum laude in 1948. Later he did graduate work at Oxford. In 1954 Mr. King assumed his post as Secretary of Inter- national Legal Studies. He works with the Committee on Grad- uate Studies and is Advisor to Foreign Students. For three years he has been the Fulbright advisor for the Law School. Born: 1918, Chicago, Illinois. LOUIS A. TOEPFER Secretary of the Law School Director of Admissions Mr. Toepfer graduated from the Law School in 1947, after having had his course interrupted by four years of service with the Navy. Upon receiving his degree he was appointed Secre- tary of the Placement Office, and a year later he was desig- nated Assistant Dean and Director ot Admissions. In 1952 he took charge of the School's Financial Aids program, com- bining this with his placement and admissions responsibilities. On January 1, 1956, Mr. Toepfer was appointed Secretary of the Law School. He now serves in that capacity and also continues as Director of Admissions and Financial Aids. Born: 1919, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, A.B., 1940, Beloit College, LL.B., 1947, Harvard. WILLIAM SPRAGUE BARNES Assistant Dean After graduating from Yale in 1940, Mr. Barnes entered the Law School, but left shortly thereafter to ioin the service in 1941. A fighter pilot in Egypt and Libya in 1943, he com- pleted his first year work while a prisoner of war and grad- uated from the Law School in 1947. He received his degree of docteur en droit from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, in 1957. Between 1948 and 1950 he was Research Associate in Comparative Law at Michigan Law School. From 1950-1954 he served the Law School as Secretary of International Legal Studies. He is director of the World Tax Series. In 1955 he was appointed Assistant Dean. Born: 1919, New York City. A.B., 1940, Yale, LL.B., 1947, Harvard. WESLEY E. BEVINS, JR. Assistant Dean Director of the Harvard Law School Fund Mr. Bevins entered the Law School in 1946 after service with anti-aircraft artillery of the Third Army in Europe. After graduation in 1948 he was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, and that same year became Executive Director of the Harvard Law School Fund for the Massachusetts area. In January of 1950, Mr. Bevins ioined the Administrative Stat? as Assistant Dean. He directs the operation of the Dormi- tory Office and is also Director of the Harvard Law School Fund and the Alumni OFl'ice. Mr. Bevins holds the rank of Maior in the Army Reserve and in this capacity directs a three year course in Military Law presented at the Law School by the Army. Barn: 1918, Peabody, Massachusetts.
