CALVERT MAGRUDER Lecturer on Law Now Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, Profesor Magruder' began his teaching career at the Law School in 1920. ln 1925 he was appointed Pro- fessor. He was on leave of absence in 1934 and 1935 to serve as General Counsel for the National Labor Relations Board and again in 1938 and 1939 to serve as General Counsel for the Wage and Hour Division, United States De- partment of Labor. His appointment to the Court of Appeals was made in 1939, and since 1942 he has been a iudge of the United States Emergency Court of Appeals. Professor Magruder is the co-author of Cases of the Law of Partnership and teaches Torts, Born: A.B., 1913, A.M., 1917, sr. Johns College, LLB., 1916, Harvard. WILLIAM EDWARD McCURDY Professor of Law Before his appointment to the Law School faculty in 1923, Professor McCurdy was legal secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis. Subsequently he has been Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Wisconsin and has taught summer sessions at Wisconsin, Cornell, North Carolina, and Texas law schools. He served in the U. S. Army in 1917-1918, and in U. S. Military Government iGermanyl in 1945-1956 and again from 1947 until 1949, successively as Chief of the Legal Advice Branch and Associate iand Actingi Director of the Legal Divi- sion of OMGUS. Professor McCurdy participated in preparation of The Re- statements of Contracts, Restitution, and Torts. He edited Cases on Persons and Domestic Relations, and co-edited Cases on Sales with Professor Williston. He teaches Contracts and Domestic Relations and seminars in Community Property and Family Law. Born: 18937 Augusto, Georgia A.B., 1916, Ll..B., 1921, S.J.D., 1922, Harvard. JOHN THEODORE MCNAUGHTON Professor of Law Professor McNaughton was graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1948. Thereafter, he was a Rhodes Scholar, served in the General Counsel's OFfice of E. C. A. in Paris, and was editor and legal counsel of the Pekin illlinoisi Daily Times. Since his appointment to the Law School faculty in 1953, Professor McNaughton has taught Evidence, Commercial Law, Torts, Contracts, and Agency. Professor McNaughton has published Workbook in Judicial Proof and three sets of experimental problem materials for use in teaching Evidence. With Professor W. Barton Leach, Professor McNaughton published Handbook of Massachusetts Evidence 13d ed. 19561. During this past year, Professor McNaughton has served on a part-time basis as an Assistant District Attorney for the Northern District 1Middlesex Countyl of Massachusetts. WALTER BARTON LEACH Story Professor of Law After graduating from the Law School, Professor Leach served as legal secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes. ln 1929 he was appointed to the Law School faculty, having also taught at Northeastern University, Oxford University, and the Uni- versity of Colorado. He is now a Brigadier General in the U. S. A. F. R. and a Consultant to the Air Force. Professor Leach's publications include among others Future Interests and Wills, Cases and Text on Property lwith Professor Casnerl, and The Rule Against Perpetuities lAmerican Edition with Owen Tudor, English Edition with J. H. C. Morris of Oxfordl. ln addition, he has been a contributor to The Re- statement of Property, and the American Law of Property. Professor Leach teaches a section of Property l and is supervising a Seminar in Defense Policy and Administration. Born: 1900, Boston, Massachusetts. A.B,, 1921, LL.B., 1924, Harvard, Certificate d'Etudes Francaises, 1290, Universite de Grenoble. LOUIS LOSS Professor of Law A graduate of the Yale Law School, Professor Loss was Grsi associated with the legal staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and in 1948 became the associate General Counsel of the S. E. C. He was Visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale from 1947 to 1952. The following year he became' a member of the Law School faculty. Professor Loss has published a number of articles in legal and financial periodicals and is the author of Securities Regulation H951 with 1955 Supp.l and co-author of Blue Sky Law l1957l. He teaches Agency, Corporations I, Securities Regulation, and the Litigation Case Study Seminar. Born: 1914, Lancaster, Pennsylvaina. B.S., 1934, University of Pennsylvania, LL.B., 1937, Yale, A.M. lHon.1, 1953, Harvard. JAMES ANGELL MacLACHLAN Professor of Law Professor MacLachlan practiced law in Chicago from 1916 until 1924 except for two years as a Captain in the Field Artillery. He returned to the Law School in 1924. Since 1932 he has been a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference and has been active in drafting amendments to the Bank- ruptcy Act. On leave of absence from the Law School during World War ll, he was Special Counsel to the O. P. A. and Contract Renegotiator for the U. S. Maritime Commission. He edited two editions of McLaughlin's Cases on the Fed- eral Anti-Trust Laws and co-edited several editions of Cases on Creditors' Rights with John Hanna. He completed a Horn- book on Bankruptcy in 1956. Professor MacLachlan teaches Property l, Agency, and Creditors Rights. Born: 1891, Ann Arbor, Michigan. PHIL CALDWELL NEAL Visiting Professor of Law After serving as law clerk to the late Justice Robert H. Jackson from 1943 to 1945, Professor Neal went to San Francisco as a member of the International Secretariat at the San Francisco Confernce. In 1948 he left the practice of law to join the faculty of Stanford University and became Professor of Law in 1954. He has taught two sections of the second year course in Administrative Law and conducted an Administrative Law seminar dealing with the regulation of the broadcasting in- dustry by the Federal Communications Commission. Born: 1919, Chicago, Illinois. A.B., 1940, LL.B., 1943, Harvard. ALBERT MARTIN SACKS Professor of Law After graduating from the College of the City of New York in 1940, Professor Sacks was associated with a New York corporation until 1942, when he entered the Army. In the Army he served as a Personnel Consultant. Upon graduating from Harvard Law School in 1948, Pro- fessor Sacks became law clerk to the late Augustus N. Hand, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit. He was a law clerk to Mr. Justice Frankfurter during the Supreme Court Term in 1949, He remained in Washington in private practice with Covington and Burling until 1952, when he was appointed to the Law School. Professor Sacks conducts courses in Civil Procedure, The Legal Process, and Equitable Remedies. Born: 1920, New York City. B.B.A., 1940, College of the City of New York, LL.B., 1948, Harvard. AUSTIN WAKEMAN SCOTT Dane Professor of Law ln 1909 Professor Scott began his teaching career at the Law School. During 1911 and 1912 he was Dean of the College of Law at the State University of Iowa, and from 1915 to 1916 was Acting Dean of the Harvard Law School. He has also held the Story and Dane Chairs. In 1928 he was President of the Association of American Law Schools, and in 1954 was a Visiting Professor at Oxford University. He served as Reporter for The Restatement of Trusts and as Co-Reporter with Professor Seavey for The Restatement of Judgements and The Restatement of Restitution. Professor Scott also drafted the Uniform Fiduciaries Act. His writings include a treatise on the law of Trusts, and casebooks on Trusts, Civil Procedure and Judicial Remedies.
