BENJAMIN KAPLAN Professor of Law Professor Kaplan is a graduate of Columbia Law School where he was editor-in-chief of the Law Review. He practiced law in New York City from 1933 to 1942. During Army service he was a member of Justice Jackson's staff in the Nuremberg prosecution. He returned to his firm in 1946, became Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard in 1947, and was appointed Professor of Law in 1948. Professor Kaplan teaches Civil Procedure, Equitable Reme- dies, and a course in Copyright, Trademark and Unfair Com- petition. He is co-author with Professor Field of Materials for a Basic Course in Civil Procedure l1953l. During the present academic year Mr. Kaplan is Visiting Professor at Yale Law Schocl. Born: 19117 New York City University. MILTON KATZ Henry L. Stimson Professor of Law and Director, International Legal Studies Professor Katz ioined the Law School faculty in 1939. During World War ll, he served as Solicitor of the War Pro- duction Board from 1941 to 1943, and as U. S. Executive Officer of the Combined Production and Resources Board in 1942 and 1943, thereafter, he served as Lieutenant Com- mander, U. S. N. R. ln 1946, he became the Byrne Professor of Administrative Law and published his Cases and Materials on Administrative Law in 1947. On leave after 1948, he served as U. S. Special Representative in Europe, with the rank of Ambassador, as such, he was the chief of the Marshall Plan in Europe. Con- currently, he served as Chairman of the Defense, Financial, and Economic Committee under NATO, and as the U. S. Representative on the Economic Commission for Europe. In 1954, he returned to the faculty. Currently he is teaching International Law and Torts. Born: 19077 New York City. A.B., 19277 LL.B., 1931, Harvard. A.B., 1929, College ot the Cnty of New York LLB 1933 Columbia ROBERT ERNEST KEETON Professor Keeton received his undergraduate and law school training at the University of Texas and was engaged in private practice in Houston, Texas, until the outbreak of World War ll. From 1943 to 1945 he was Flag Secretary to Rear Admiral Mullinnix and assistant Flag Secretary to Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. After the war, he resumed private practice, specializing in personal injury and insurance litigation. Professor Keeton was co-chairman of the Special Committee on Small Loan Legisla- tion, State Bar of Texas. Prior to his appointment to the faculty of the Law School in 1954, he was Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University. Professor Keeton is the author of Trial Tactics and Methods. MARK DEWOLFE HOWE Professor of Law Before entering the legal field Professor Howe spent two years as an assistant director for Paramount Pictures. He came to the Law School in 1930 and upon graduation was legal secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes. After private practice in Boston, he was appointed to the University of Buffalo Law School faculty and became Dean of the school in 1940. During World War Il Professor Howe served as Colonel with the American Military Government and with the Civil Affairs Division of the War Department. He has edited the Holmes-Pollock and the Holmes-Laski Letters, Readings in Amer- ican Legal History and the first of three volumes covering the biography of Mr. Justice Holmes. He teaches Constitutional Law, and American Legal History. He also conducts a course on The Role of Law in Anglo- American History, in Harvard College. Born: 19067 Boston, Massachusetts. A.B., 1928, LL.B., 1933, Harvard. FLEMING JAMES, JR. Visiting Professor of Law After receiving his degree from Yale Law School, Professor James spent four years as a lawyer with the New York, New Haven 81 Hartford Railroad Company. ln 1933 he ioined Yale Faculty as Associate Professor of Law and has been Lafayette S. Foster Professor of Law since 1941. During 1936-39 he served as Director of Research for New York Law Society and in 1943 became Director of Litigation Division of the O, P. A. in Washington until end of the war. He is currently Chairman of the Connecticut Board of Labor Relations. He has been very active in the local affairs of his home town, North Haven. He is co-author of Cases on Trials, Judgments and Appeals l1936l, Cases and Materials on Torts l1942l, The Law of Torts l1956l. Professor James is teaching Civil Procedure and Torts. Born: 1904, Shanghai, China. B.A., 1925, LL.B., 1928, Yale. LOUIS LEVENTHAL JAFFE Byrne Professor of Administrative Law Professor Jaffe graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1928. After general practice and graduate study, he served as law clerk to Mr. Justice Brandeis in 1933. He was an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board through 1935. Professor Jaffe began teaching at the University of Buffalo Law School and in 1948 became Dean. His article on Res lpsa Loquitor Vindicated inaugurated the Buffalo Law Review. He was appointed to the Law School faculty in 1950. He is the author of Cases and Materials on Administrative Law, and is working on a treatise on the same subiect. WALTER BARTON LEACH Story Professor of Law After graduating from the Law School, Professor Leach served as legal secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes. ln 1929 he was appointed to the Law School faculty, having also taught at Northeastern University, Oxford University, and the Uni- versity of Colorado. He is now a Brigadier General in the U. S. A. F. R. and a Consultant to the Air Force. Professor Leach's publications include among others Future Interests and Wills, Cases and Text on Property lwith Professor Casnerl, and The Rule Against Perpetuities lAmerican Edition with Owen Tudor, English Edition with J. H. C. Morris of Oxfordl. ln addition, he has been a contributor to The Re- statement of Property, and the American Law of Property. Professor Leach teaches a section of Property l and is supervising a Seminar in Defense Policy and Administration. Born: 1900, Boston, Massachusetts. LOUIS LOSS Professor of Law A graduate of the Yale Law School, Professor Loss was Grsi associated with the legal staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and in 1948 became the associate General Counsel of the S. E. C. He was Visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale from 1947 to 1952. The following year he became' a member of the Law School faculty. Professor Loss has published a number of articles in legal and financial periodicals and is the author of Securities Regulation H951 with 1955 Supp.l and co-author of Blue Sky Law l1957l. He teaches Agency, Corporations I, Securities Regulation, and the Litigation Case Study Seminar. Born: 1914, Lancaster, Pennsylvaina. B.S., 1934, University of Pennsylvania, LL.B., 1937, Yale, A.M. lHon.1, 1953, Harvard. JAMES ANGELL MacLACHLAN Professor of Law Professor MacLachlan practiced law in Chicago from 1916 until 1924 except for two years as a Captain in the Field Artillery. He returned to the Law School in 1924. Since 1932 he has been a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference and has been active in drafting amendments to the Bank- ruptcy Act. On leave of absence from the Law School during World War ll, he was Special Counsel to the O. P. A. and Contract Renegotiator for the U. S. Maritime Commission. He edited two editions of McLaughlin's Cases on the Fed- eral Anti-Trust Laws and co-edited several editions of Cases on Creditors' Rights with John Hanna. He completed a Horn- book on Bankruptcy in 1956. Professor MacLachlan teaches Property l, Agency, and Creditors Rights. Born: 1891, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
