LIVINGSTON HALL Vice Dean and Professor of Law Professor Hall ioined the Law School faculty in 1932 after four years of private practice and a year of service as the Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. In 1939 he was appointed Vice Dean but was on leave of absence during the war to serve initially with the O. P. A. in the Boston area and later with the Army Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific. Professor Hall is a member of the Judicial Council of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Vice President of the Massachusetts Bar Association. He has edited Cases on Crim- inal Law and Enforcement with Professor Glueck and Cases on Agency with Professor Seavey. Professor Hall teaches Agency and Criminal Law. Born: 1903, Chicago, Illinois. Ph.B., 1923, University of Chicago, LL.B., 1927, Harvard. HENRY MELVIN HART JR. Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor of Law After receiving his degree as Doctor of Juridical Science, Professor Hart spent a year as legal secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis. Since 1932 he has been a member of the Law School faculty. While on leave of absence he has been associated with the OFfice of Solicitor General and the Immigration and Natu- ralization Service. During World War Il, Professor Hart served as Associate General Counsel for Price in the O. P. A. and later as General Counsel in the Office of Economic Stabiliza- tion. During 1954-1955 he was a Visiting Professor at Ohio State University. He is the author of numerous articles and has collaborated with Professor Wechsler of Columbia on The Federal Courts and the Federal System 119531. Professor Hart teaches The Legal Process, Criminal Law, Federal Courts and The Federal System, and conducts a seminar in Legislation. Born: 1904, Butte, Montana. DAVID RICHARD HERWITZ Professor of Law A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Herwitz entered the Law School in 1946 where he was a member of the Board of Student Advisers and the Law Review. In 1949, he went to Washington, D. C., and served as an attorney with the Tax Court. The next year he returned to the Law School as a Teaching Fellow. Between 1951 and 1954, he practiced in Boston and lectured at Northeastern University School of Law. GEORGE KNOWLES GARDNER Professor of Law A member of the Massachusetts bar since 1914, Professor Gardner practiced in Boston for fourteen years. He was an Instructor in Law at Northeastern University from 1921 to 1928 when he was appointed to the faculty of the Harvard Law School. From 1942 to 1946, he again practiced law in Boston, and was Assistant Treasurer and Secretary of the Taunton Coating Mills, Inc. SHELDON GLUECK Roscoe Pound Professor of Law Before being appointed to the Law School in 1929, Pro- fessor Glueck was an instructor in the Social Ethics Department at Harvard. He has been advisor to the American Law Insti- tute's Youth Correction Code and Penal Code, a member of the U. S. Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Criminal Procedure, a U. S. delegate to the International Prison Con- gress in 1930 and 1950, and a consultant to the late Justice Robert H. Jackson on the trial of war criminals, For the past several years, he has been engaged, with his wife, Dr. Eleanor Touroff Glueck, in research on the problem of Juvenile Delinquency. CHARLES MONROE HAAR Professor of Law Entering the Law School in September, 1941, Professor l-laar left shortly thereafter for a tour of duty in New Guinea and the Philippines as a Naval Intelligence Officer. Graduat- ing in 1948, he was awarded a Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and spent a year in England, where he wrote Land Planning Law in a Free Society. From 1950 to 1952, Professor Haar lectured at New York University and was a consultant for the Town Planning Division of the United Nations. He teaches Property I and conducts four seminars: Land Use and Conservation, Land Use and Planning, Land Use Problems in Developing Areas, and Real Estate Transactions. MARK DEWOLFE HOWE Professor of Law Before entering the legal field Professor Howe spent two years as an assistant director for Paramount Pictures. He came to the Law School in 1930 and upon graduation was legal secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes. After private practice in Boston, he was appointed to the University of Buffalo Law School faculty and became Dean of the school in 1940. During World War Il Professor Howe served as Colonel with the American Military Government and with the Civil Affairs Division of the War Department. He has edited the Holmes-Pollock and the Holmes-Laski Letters, Readings in Amer- ican Legal History and the first of three volumes covering the biography of Mr. Justice Holmes. He teaches Constitutional Law, and American Legal History. He also conducts a course on The Role of Law in Anglo- American History, in Harvard College. Born: 19067 Boston, Massachusetts. Visiting Professor of Law After receiving his degree from Yale Law School, Professor James spent four years as a lawyer with the New York, New Haven 81 Hartford Railroad Company. ln 1933 he ioined Yale Faculty as Associate Professor of Law and has been Lafayette S. Foster Professor of Law since 1941. During 1936-39 he served as Director of Research for New York Law Society and in 1943 became Director of Litigation Division of the O, P. A. in Washington until end of the war. He is currently Chairman of the Connecticut Board of Labor Relations. He has been very active in the local affairs of his home town, North Haven. He is co-author of Cases on Trials, Judgments and Appeals l1936l, Cases and Materials on Torts l1942l, The Law of Torts l1956l. Professor James is teaching Civil Procedure and Torts. Born: 1904, Shanghai, China. B.A., 1925, LL.B., 1928, Yale. LOUIS LEVENTHAL JAFFE Byrne Professor of Administrative Law Professor Jaffe graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1928. After general practice and graduate study, he served as law clerk to Mr. Justice Brandeis in 1933. He was an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board through 1935. Professor Jaffe began teaching at the University of Buffalo Law School and in 1948 became Dean. His article on Res lpsa Loquitor Vindicated inaugurated the Buffalo Law Review. He was appointed to the Law School faculty in 1950. He is the author of Cases and Materials on Administrative Law, and is working on a treatise on the same subiect.
