f, A 75 srl K., RICHARD HINCKLEY FIELD Professor of Law After graduating from the Law School in 1929, Professor Field was engaged in private practice in Boston until the onset of World War Il. ln 1942 he ioined the staff of the Office of Price Administration as Regional Attorney, and in December of 1943 went to Washington as General Counsel for the O. P. A. Professor Field returned to the Law School in 1946 as a member of the faculty. He is co-editor, with Professor Kaplan, of a casebook on Civil Procedure and is currently acting as a consultant to the Maine Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure. This year, he teaches courses in Civil Procedure, Trial Practice, and Evidence. Born: 1903, Phillips, Maine. PAUL ABRAHAM FREUND Royall Professor of Law After receiving his S.J.D. from Harvard in 1932, Professor Freund served as legal secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis. Later he served on the legal staffs of the Treasury Department and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. From 1935 to 1939, he was in the office of the Solicitor General of the United States and was Special Assistant to the Attorney General. Professor Freund returned to the Law School faculty in 1939. From 1942 to 1946 he was on leave to the Department of Justice. His published works include On Understanding the Supreme Court, and he is co-editor of a casebook on Constitutional Law. He is advisor on The Restatement of Conflict of Laws. Professor Freund teaches Constitutional Law and Conflict of Laws. He is on leave of absence at Cambridge University for the academic year 1957-1958. Born: 19085 St. Louis, Missouri. A.B., 1926, LL.B., 1929, Harvard ,3 .J,,-n LON LUVOIS FULLER Carter Professor of General Jurisprudence Professor Fuller has been in the field of legal instruction since 1926. He has been associated with the faculties of the University of Oregon, the University of Illinois, and Duke University. He joined the faculty of the Law School in 1939. From 1941 to 1945, concurrent with his teaching activities at the Law School, he was in private practice in Boston. Professor Fuller holds a Philips Award of the American Philosophical Society, which he won in 1936 for an essay in Jurisprudence entitled The Law in Quest of Itself. He has also edited Collected Readings in Problems of Jurisprudence, and a casebook on Contracts. Professor Fuller teaches Contracts and Jurisprudence. He also has a seminar in Jurisprudence. WILLIAM J. CURRAN Lecturer in Legal Medicine Professor Curran was appointed to the Law School Faculty in the second semester of the academic year, 1956-1957. He had been engaged in teaching in the Medicolegal Prob- lems Seminar since 1954 as a member of the Harvard Medical School Faculty. At present, Professor Curran teaches the Med- icolegal Problems Seminar at the Law School and a course in Legal Aspects of Organized Health Problems at the School of Public Health. He is also Professor of Legal Medicine at Boston University. ln addition to his law degrees from Boston College and Harvard, Professor Curran this year completes his work for a master of science degree in public health at the School of Public Health. He has formerly taught at Boston College, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Santa Clara. Born: 1925, Boston, Massachusetts. LL.B., 1950, Boston College, LL.M., 1951, Harvard MQ.. JOHN P. DAWSON Professor of Law Professor Dawson attended college and law school at the University of Michigan. He spent the years 1924 to 1927 in England studying at Oxford University, which granted him the D.Phil. degree in 1930. He was at the University of Michigan since 1927. On leave from the University during 1942 to 1945, he served variously as: Chief Counsel in the Rent Section, Office of Price Administration, Chief, Middle East Division, Foreign Economic Administration, and Acting Regional Economic Coun- sellor for the Middle East, State Department. ln 1947-48 he took a post as Director of the Foreign Trade Administration for the Greek government. He teaches first year Contracts, the third year course in Restitution, and a seminar on the Functions of the Judge. Born: 1902, Detroit, Michigan. B.A., 1922, J.D., 1924, Michigan, D.Phil., 1930, Oxford. CHARLES FAIRMAN Professor of Law Professor Fairman has taught and lectured on law and government at Pomona College, Williams College, Stanford University, Washington University and Harvard. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the Judge Advocate Gen- eral's Office with the rank of Colonel, thus concluding par- ticipation in both World Wars. Professor Fairman's published works include The Law of Martial Rule, Mr. Justice Miller and the Supreme Court, 1862-1890, and American Constitutional Decisions, Rev. Ed., 1950. Professor Fairman teaches American Legal History, Criminal Law, and a seminar in Constitutional Problems. He is Chairman of the Law School Library Committee. Born: 1897, Alton, Illinois. GEORGE KNOWLES GARDNER Professor of Law A member of the Massachusetts bar since 1914, Professor Gardner practiced in Boston for fourteen years. He was an Instructor in Law at Northeastern University from 1921 to 1928 when he was appointed to the faculty of the Harvard Law School. From 1942 to 1946, he again practiced law in Boston, and was Assistant Treasurer and Secretary of the Taunton Coating Mills, Inc. SHELDON GLUECK Roscoe Pound Professor of Law Before being appointed to the Law School in 1929, Pro- fessor Glueck was an instructor in the Social Ethics Department at Harvard. He has been advisor to the American Law Insti- tute's Youth Correction Code and Penal Code, a member of the U. S. Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Criminal Procedure, a U. S. delegate to the International Prison Con- gress in 1930 and 1950, and a consultant to the late Justice Robert H. Jackson on the trial of war criminals, For the past several years, he has been engaged, with his wife, Dr. Eleanor Touroff Glueck, in research on the problem of Juvenile Delinquency. Born: 1891, Worcester, Massachusetts. A.B., 1912, LL.B., 1914, Harvard. Professor Gardner is the author of numerous articles in legal periodicals. This year he teaches Admiralty. CHARLES MONROE HAAR Professor of Law Entering the Law School in September, 1941, Professor l-laar left shortly thereafter for a tour of duty in New Guinea and the Philippines as a Naval Intelligence Officer. Graduat- ing in 1948, he was awarded a Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and spent a year in England, where he wrote Land Planning Law in a Free Society. From 1950 to 1952, Professor Haar lectured at New York University and was a consultant for the Town Planning Division of the United Nations. He teaches Property I and conducts four seminars: Land Use and Conservation, Land Use and Planning, Land Use Problems in Developing Areas, and Real Estate Transactions.
