ABRAM JOSEPH CHAYES Assistant Professor of Law In 1955 Professor Chayes was appointed to the Law School faculty. He received his A.B. from Harvard in 1943, and after- wards served with the Field Artillery in France, Holland, Ger- many, and Japan. While a student at the Law School, he was President and Note Editor of the Law Review. Professor Chayes has been Legal Advisor to Governor Chester Bowles of Connecticut and Associate General Counsel of the President's Materials Policy Commission. For the Oc- tober Term 1951, he was law clerk to Mr. Justice Frankfurter. From 1952 until his appointment to the faculty, he was asso- ciated with the firm of Covington and Burling in Washington, D. PETER FRANCIS COOGAN Lecturer on Law A partner in the Boston firm of Ropes, Gray, Best, Coolidge 81 Rugg, Mr. Coogan gives a Fall seminar in Secured Com- mercial Transactions. Along with fifteen years in practice, his career includes ten years in business, and teaching experience in both law and business. He has been active in drafting Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code, dealing with secured transactions. Before commencing his legal career, Mr. Coogan spnt a number of years in publishing as manager of various divisions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Born: 1904, Watertown, Wisconsin. 1923-26, Mdrquetle University: LL.B., 1939, Western Reserve, A.M., Boston University, LL.M., 1942, Harvard, ARCHIBALD COX Professor of Law Receiving his LL.B. in 1937, Professor Cox began his law career by serving as legal secretary to Judge Learned Hand. Thereafter he practiced in Boston until 1941 when he became associated with the National Defense Mediation Board. He later entered the Office of the Solicitor General, Department of Justice, and from 1943 to 1945 he was Associate Solicitor General for the United States Department of Labor. Appointed to the Law School faculty in 1945, Professor Cox served as Acting Vice-Dean during the Spring Term of 1947. In 1952 he was Chairman of the Wage Stabilization Board. Professor Cox is the editor of a casebook on Labor Law. This year he teaches Labor Law, Unfair Competition and the Labor Law Seminar. Born: 19127 Plainfield, New Jersey. CLARK BYSE Visiting Professor of Law Following his graduation from Wisconsin in 1938, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, Professor Byse became Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Iowa. In 1940 he departed for a five year period of govern- ment and war service. He returned to the academic profession in the fall of 1946 as an Assistant Professor of Law at Pennsylvania and became Professor of Law in 1948. He has recently completed with Louis O. Joughin a study of Tenure Plans and Practices in American Higher Education. Author of numerous law review articles, Professor Byse was co-editor lwith W. Gellhornl of Administrative Law Cases and Comments 119541. He is teach- ing Contracts and Administrative Law. Born: 1912, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. ANDREW JAMES CASNER Professor of Law A member of the Law School faculty since 1938, Professor Casner previously served on the faculties of the law schools of Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Texas and Stanford Univer- sities. Active in alumni and American Bar Asociation activities, he is also on the Board of Directors of Old Colony Trust Co. Professor Casner was engaged in the preparation of The Restatement of Property, both as a reporter and as an advisor. He was Reporter for the Uniform Property Act, and is Editor- in-Chief of American Law of Property. Professor Casner is co- author of Cases and Texts on Property and is author of Estate Planning-Cases, Statutes, Text and Other Materials isecond edition, 1956 with 1957 supplementl. DAVID FARQUHAR CAVERS Associate Dean and Fessenden Professor of Law Following graduation from the Law School, Professor Cavers was associated with a law office in New York City. During the 1929-1930 school year, he returned to Harvard to begin a teaching career which later included appointment at West Virginia University College of Law, Duke University, Yale Uni- versity, and the University of Chicago. After wartime service as Assistant and Associate General Counsel for Price in the O. P. A., Professor Cavers reioined the Law School faculty. In 1951, he was appointed to the post of Associate Dean. In addition to his other contributions to legal periodicals, Professor Covers founded and edited Law and Contemporary Problems. He teaches Conflict of Laws and conducts seminars in Atomic Energy Regulation and Legal Education. Born: 19027 Buticlo, New York. WILLIAM J. CURRAN Lecturer in Legal Medicine Professor Curran was appointed to the Law School Faculty in the second semester of the academic year, 1956-1957. He had been engaged in teaching in the Medicolegal Prob- lems Seminar since 1954 as a member of the Harvard Medical School Faculty. At present, Professor Curran teaches the Med- icolegal Problems Seminar at the Law School and a course in Legal Aspects of Organized Health Problems at the School of Public Health. He is also Professor of Legal Medicine at Boston University. ln addition to his law degrees from Boston College and Harvard, Professor Curran this year completes his work for a master of science degree in public health at the School of Public Health. He has formerly taught at Boston College, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Santa Clara. Born: 1925, Boston, Massachusetts. LL.B., 1950, Boston College, LL.M., 1951, Harvard MQ.. JOHN P. DAWSON Professor of Law Professor Dawson attended college and law school at the University of Michigan. He spent the years 1924 to 1927 in England studying at Oxford University, which granted him the D.Phil. degree in 1930. He was at the University of Michigan since 1927. On leave from the University during 1942 to 1945, he served variously as: Chief Counsel in the Rent Section, Office of Price Administration, Chief, Middle East Division, Foreign Economic Administration, and Acting Regional Economic Coun- sellor for the Middle East, State Department. ln 1947-48 he took a post as Director of the Foreign Trade Administration for the Greek government. He teaches first year Contracts, the third year course in Restitution, and a seminar on the Functions of the Judge. Born: 1902, Detroit, Michigan. CHARLES FAIRMAN Professor of Law Professor Fairman has taught and lectured on law and government at Pomona College, Williams College, Stanford University, Washington University and Harvard. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the Judge Advocate Gen- eral's Office with the rank of Colonel, thus concluding par- ticipation in both World Wars. Professor Fairman's published works include The Law of Martial Rule, Mr. Justice Miller and the Supreme Court, 1862-1890, and American Constitutional Decisions, Rev. Ed., 1950. Professor Fairman teaches American Legal History, Criminal Law, and a seminar in Constitutional Problems. He is Chairman of the Law School Library Committee. Born: 1897, Alton, Illinois.
