ROBERT BRAUCHER Professor of Law After his graduation from the Law School, Professor Braucher practiced in New York City and then enlisted in the Army in 1941. He served as a fighter pilot and later as an intelligence officer. He ioined the Law School faculty in 1946. From 1951 to 1953 he was a consultant to the General Counsel of the Department of the Air -Force, and from 1948 to 1952 was a consultant of the New York Law Revision Com- mission. ln 1954 he was appointed to the Massachusetts Commission on Uniform State Laws. Professor Braucher is author of Introduction to Commercial Law lwith C. Corkerl 1950, Cases on Commercial Law, 1951, Commercial Trans- actions lwith Professor Sutherland and Willcoxi 1953, and Documents of Title, 1955. Professor Braucher is currently teaching Commercial Law and Collective Bargaining, and is conducting seminars in Commercial Law and in Legislation. Born: 1916, New York City. Professor of Law In 1948 Professor Brewster went to Paris as Assistant to the General Counsel in the Office of the United States Special Representative in Europe, and was a Special Assistant to Professor Katz when the latter was made Deputy Special Representative. The following year he became a Research Associate in the Department of Economics and Social Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was appointed to the Law School faculty in the fall of 1950. This year Professor Brewster teaches courses in Anti-Trust and Legal Problems of Doing Business Abroad. He also con- ducts the Antitrust Seminar and the International Investment Seminar. ERNEST JOSEPH BROWN Professor of Law After receiving his law degree from Harvard, Professor Brown practiced law in Buffalo, New York. ln 1937 he began teaching at the University of Buffalo Law School and combined this activity with a practice which was primarily devoted to tax and corporate matters. He served as Captain in the Office of Strategic Services from 1942 to 1945. In 1946 Professor Brown was appointed to the faculty of the Law School. With Professors Freund, Sutherland, and Howe, he is co- author of a casebook, Constitutional Law. This year he teaches Taxation and Constitutional Law and conducts a seminar in Taxation. RALPH JACKSON BAKER Weld Professor of Law Immediately following graduation, Professor Baker taught for three years as Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Harvard Law School faculty in 1932, after 18 years of private practice in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Professor Baker has contributed to the American Law In- stitute's Restatement of Trusts and Restatement of Restitution and has assisted in the drafting of the Investments Instruments section of the Commercial Code prepared by the Institute and the Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. With the late Pro- fessor Dodd he edited Cases and Materials on Corporations. Professor Baker teaches Trusts and Corporations II and Il-A. Born: 18887 Octoraro, Pennsylvania. BAXTER Assistant Professor of Law From 1947 until 1954 Professor Baxter was associated with the International Law Branch, Office of the Judge Advocate General. He headed the International Law Branch during the latter years of his service. For six months in 1954 he was connected with the Office of the General Counsel, Office of the Secretary of Defense, and has since served as consultant to that office. Professor Baxter came to the Law School in 1954 as Re- search Associate in the International Waterways Proiect. He is now assisting Professor Sohn on a draft codification of the Law of Responsibility of States for the United Nations. Semi- nars in International Law Problems, Legal Problems of Inter- national Air Transportation and Criminal Law are under his direction. Born: 19215 New York City. HAROLD JOSEPH BERMAN Professor of Law Prior to graduating from the Yale Lal School in 1947, Pro- fessor Berman served overseas with signal intelligence from 1942 to 1945. He was appointed to the Law School faculty in 1948. Specializing in Soviet Law, Professor Berman has written several books and numerous articles in the field, among which are Justice in Russia l195Ol and Soviet Military Law and Administration lwith M. Kernerl, l1955l. This spring he will publish The Nature and Functions of Law: An Introduction for Students of the Arts and Sciences. He has been active in promoting the teaching of law in the liberal arts curriculum and teaches a course in the So- ciology of Law at Harvard College. CLARK BYSE Visiting Professor of Law Following his graduation from Wisconsin in 1938, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, Professor Byse became Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Iowa. In 1940 he departed for a five year period of govern- ment and war service. He returned to the academic profession in the fall of 1946 as an Assistant Professor of Law at Pennsylvania and became Professor of Law in 1948. He has recently completed with Louis O. Joughin a study of Tenure Plans and Practices in American Higher Education. Author of numerous law review articles, Professor Byse was co-editor lwith W. Gellhornl of Administrative Law Cases and Comments 119541. He is teach- ing Contracts and Administrative Law. Born: 1912, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. B.E., 1935, State Teachers College, Oshkosh, LL.B., Wisconsin, LL.M., 1939, J.S.D., 1952, Columbia University. ANDREW JAMES CASNER Professor of Law A member of the Law School faculty since 1938, Professor Casner previously served on the faculties of the law schools of Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Texas and Stanford Univer- sities. Active in alumni and American Bar Asociation activities, he is also on the Board of Directors of Old Colony Trust Co. Professor Casner was engaged in the preparation of The Restatement of Property, both as a reporter and as an advisor. He was Reporter for the Uniform Property Act, and is Editor- in-Chief of American Law of Property. Professor Casner is co- author of Cases and Texts on Property and is author of Estate Planning-Cases, Statutes, Text and Other Materials isecond edition, 1956 with 1957 supplementl. He teaches Property I and II, and a seminar in Research Problems of Property Law. Born: 1907, Chicago, Illinois. A.B., LL.B., 1929, University of Illinois, S.J.D., 1941, Columbia. DAVID FARQUHAR CAVERS Associate Dean and Fessenden Professor of Law Following graduation from the Law School, Professor Cavers was associated with a law office in New York City. During the 1929-1930 school year, he returned to Harvard to begin a teaching career which later included appointment at West Virginia University College of Law, Duke University, Yale Uni- versity, and the University of Chicago. After wartime service as Assistant and Associate General Counsel for Price in the O. P. A., Professor Cavers reioined the Law School faculty. In 1951, he was appointed to the post of Associate Dean. In addition to his other contributions to legal periodicals, Professor Covers founded and edited Law and Contemporary Problems. He teaches Conflict of Laws and conducts seminars in Atomic Energy Regulation and Legal Education. Born: 19027 Buticlo, New York.
