NATHAN MARSH PUSEY President of Harvard University HE twenty-fourth president of Harvard was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on April 4, 1907. Grad- uating from Abraham Lincoln High School in Coun- cil Bluffs, he entered Harvard College, where he maiored in English and Comparative Literature. After receiving his A.B. degree magna cum laude in 1928, he traveled for a year in Europe and then became a teacher at Riverdale Country School, outside New York City. Receiving his Master of Arts degree in 1932, he served as a part-time Assistant in History at Harvard during 1932-1933 and spent the following year in Greece as an Archibald Coolidge Fellow. President Pusey went to Lawrence College in 1935 as a Sophomore Tutor in an experimental program of liberal arts education. He then re- turned to Harvard to complete his graduate work, receiving his Ph.D. in 1937. From 1938 to 1940 he taught at Scripps Col- lege 1California1 as Assistant Professor of History and Literature. ln 1940, he ioined the faculty of Wesleyan University to take part in the develop- ment of new liberal arts courses for freshmen and sophomores. He became Associate Professor of Classics in 1943. A member of the Harvard Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, he holds numerous honorary degrees in- cluding the LL.D. from Columbia 119541, Brown 119541, and Princeton 119541, and an L.H.D. from Lawrence 119541. Among his other honors, he is a Trustee of the Carnegie Foundation for the Ad- vancement of Teaching, and a member of the Amer- ican Academy of Arts and Sciences. 10

EAN GRISWOLD entered the Law School in 1925 and he was elected President of the Law Review. After receiving his S..l.D. in 1929 he en- tered private practice in Cleveland, but soon after left for Washington where he served as Special Assistant to the Attorney General between 1929 and 1934. During this period he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court where he argued a record number of cases. He was appointed to the Law School faculty in 1934 and in the following year became a full pro- fessor. He has served as Dean since 1946. ln addition to his administrative duties, Dean Griswold teaches a course in Federal Taxation. ln the past, he has taught Trusts, Confiict of Laws and Administrative Law. He has published numerous books including Spendthrift Trusts, Cases and Ma- terials on Federal Taxation and recently The Fifth Amendment Today. The Dean is Editor of the Stu- dents Tax Law Service and General Editor of the Prentice Hall Law School Series. Dean Griswold has been advisor to the Restate- ment of Trusts, Restitution, and Judgments. He has also served as consultant to the U. S. Treasury Department.
