DONALD THEODORE TRAUTMAN , Assistant Professor of Law Professor Trautman's college education was interrupted by military serv- ice in 1943. He served in the infantry and in Military Intelligence. On his return to Harvard in 1946, Professor Trautman enrolled in the seven-year College-Law Program and received both the A.B. and LL.B. degrees from Harvard injune, 1951. Professor Trautman was a Harvard National Scholar and a holder of a Sheldon Travelling Fellowship. During the last academic year he was law clerk to Mr. justice Frankfurterf Courses taught by Professor Trautman are Conflicts of Laws, Account- ing, and Administrative Law. He also participates in an Anti-Trust Semi- nar conducted jointly by the Law School and Littauer. Born: 19245 Cleveland, Ohio. A.B., LL.B., 1951, Harvard. ARTHUR E. SUTHERLAND Professor of Law Professor Sutherland, after his graduation from the Law School, spent two years in practice in Rochester, New York. After an interval of a year as secretary to Mr.Justice Holmes in 1927-28, he returned to Rochester and remained in practice there until 1941. From 1941 to 1945 he was in the army serving in the Tunisian campaign with the First Infantry Division and in Italy with Headquarters, Fifth Army. On November 1, 1945 he became Professor of Law at Cornell and taught there until his appointment injuly, 1950, as Professor of Law at Harvard. His recent publications include Cvmli1utiona!Lnw.' Carer and Other Prob- lemr with Professors Brown, Freund, and Howe, and Studie! in Federalism with Professors Bowie, Fredrick, and Freund. He is teaching Commercial Law, Constitutional Law, and a seminar on the Bill of Rights and the Four- teenth Amendment in addition to seminars in the Business School and Littauer. VON MEHREN Professor of Law After graduation from the Law School, Professor von Mehren was for a year secretary to the Honorable Calvert Magruder, judge of the United States Court of Appeals. In 1946 he was appointed to the Law School Faculty and sent abroad to study the continental systems of law, studying at the University of Zurich, 1946-47, and at the University of Paris, 1948- 49. He took a leave of absence in 1947-48 to serve with the Legal Division of the Occupation Military Government fU.S.J in Germany. Professor von Mehren is a member of the Board of Editors of the Amerifan journal afComparative Law and is teaching Contracts, The Civil Law System, Comparative Legal Research, and Comparative Public Law. From 1912 he taught consecutively at Harvard, Oklahoma, Tulane, Indiana, A.E.F. University, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Harvard, returning here in 1927. He was president of the Association of American Law Schools, 1947, was co-reporter for the Restatements of Agency, judgments, Restitution and Torts, is editor of the American Case Book Series and has complied casebooks on Torts and Agency. He now teaches Agency, Restitution and Torts. Born: 1880, Boston, Massachusetts. John's. LOUIS B. SOHN Professor of Law john Harvey Gregory Lecturer on World Organization After serving for six years as research associate to judge Hudson of the Permanent Court of International justice, Professor Sohn joined the Harvard Faculty in 1946. For several years he was the International Law editor ofthe American Bar Associationjournal. In 1945 he took part in the San Francisco Conference which drafted the Charter of the United Nations. In 1948 he prepared for the United Nations a Survey of Treaties for the Pacific Settlement of Disputes , and in 1950-51 he served as a legal officer of the United Nations Secretariat, where he edited two volumes of Luwr and Regulation! on life Regime ofllae High Seas. He is the author of Carer and Materialr in World Law, and co-author of Peace Through Dirarmmzzenl and Claarter Re11i.tirm. This year he is teaching courses in World Organization, and Interna- tional Trade and Investment. He also conducts seminars on Problems in the Development of World Order, International Protection and Promotion of Investment, Legal Problems of International Administration, and Inter- national Regional Organizations. Born: 1914, Lwow, Poland. LL.M., Dipl. Sc., M., 1935, John Casimir LL.M., 1940, Harvard. University, Lwow, Poland, STANLEY S. SURREY Professor of Law Professor Surrey was research assistant to Professor Roswell Magill at Columbia Law School, 1932-33, followed by a brief practice in New York City. Then he started his government career: Attorney with the National Recovery Administration, Washington, D. C., 1933-35, Attorney with the National Labor Relations Board, 1935-375 associated with the Treasury De- partment 1937-39, principally as Tax Legislative Counsel, Special Counsel, 1951-52, King Subcommittee on Administration of the Internal Revenue Laws, House Committee on Ways and Means. He was appointed Professor of Law at the University of California School of Law at Berkeley, 1947-50. In 1949-50 he was a member of the American Tax Mission to-Japan. He is Chief Reporter for the American Law Institute's Income Tax Project and Director of the Harvard Law School International Program in Taxation. He is co-author, with Professor Warren of Columbia, of casebooks on Federal Income Tax, and the Federal Gift and Estate Tax.
