CLIVE PARRY Visiting Professor of Law After graduation from the University of Cambridge, England, Mr. Parry was from 1958 to 1959 a member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for International and Foreign Public Law, Berlin, Germany. In 1959 he became assistant lecturer in laws in the London School of Economics. From 1940 to 1945 he served in the British Army and subsequently with the British Foreign Office in the Middle East. In 1944-45 he was Professor of Public Law in the University of Ankara, Turkey. After World War II he was called to the English Bar and became lecturer in law at Cambridge Univer- sity where he is a Fellow and was successively Tutor and Dean of Downing College. He was one of the editors of Dicey's Conflirt of Law: and has written a monograph on Brilirla Nalionality. In 1949 he was a legal counselor for the UN Secretariat. He is teaching Public International Law at the Law School and is participating in a seminar on Federalism at Littauer. Born: 1917, Ashley, Salop, England. LL.B., 1958, M.A., 1946, Cambridge. ALBERT MARTIN SACKS Assistant Professor of Law After graduating from City College, New York, in 1940, Professor Sacks worked in the offices of a New York corporation until 1942 when he en- tered the Army. His work in the Army was that of Personnel Consultant. In October, 1948, upon his graduation from the Harvard Law School Professor Sacks became law clerk tojudge Augustus N. Hand ofthe Uni- ted States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The following year he went to Washington to serve as law clerk to Mr.justice Frankfurter during the October 1949 Term. He remained there from 1950-52 practicing law with Covington and Burling. This year he is teaching Civil Procedure, Government Regulation of Business and a seminar in State and Local Law Administration. Born: 19205 New York, N. Y. AUSTIN WAKEMAN SCOTT Dane Professor of Law Professor Scott was appointed as an instructor in the Harvard Law School in 1909, and as an assistant Professor in 1910, after a year of practice in New York City. He was Acting Dean of the Law School from 1915-1916, and has held the Story and Dane Chairs. In 1928 Professor Scott was President of the Association of American Law Schools. He was reporter for the Restatements of Trusts and of Restitution fPart ID as well as co-reporter with Professor Seavey of the Restatement of Judgments. He also drafter the Uniform Fiduciaries Act, has edited case- books on Trust, Civil Procedure and-Iudicial Remedies, and is the author of various legal monographs. In 1959 he published his treatise on the law ofTrusts. Professor Scott is now teaching Procedure and Trusts. Born: 1884, New Brunswick, New jersey. CLAVERT MAGRUDER Lecturer on Law After serving as secretary to Mr.justice Brandeis for the 1916-17 term, Professor Magruder joined the Army as an Infantry Lieutenant. Later he returned to Washington as attorney for the United States Shipping Board. In 1920 he became an Assistant Professor in the Law School, and in 1925, was appointed Professor. He was on leave of absence in 1934-35 serving as general counsel for the N.L.R.B., and again in 1938-39, serving as general counsel of the Wage and Hour Division, United States Department of Labor. In 1939 he was appointed to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and since 1942 he has served as a judge of the United States Emergency Court of Appeals. Professor Magruder is co-editor of Crane and Magruder, Carer on Law of Parmerrlaip. He is teaching a Course in Torts. Born: 1893, Annapolis, Maryland. NEWMAN Visiting Professor of Law Professor Newman has had a varied career of public service. During the war he served as Price Attorney, O.P.A., 1942-43, and as a naval ofhcer in the Olhce of the General Counsel ofthe Navy, 1943-46. In 1951, he served as Consultant, O.P.S., and was Counsel for the Governor's Commission on Unemployment Compensation in California, 1952. In 1953, he was an En- forcement Commissioner for the Economic Stabilization Administration and served as Co-Chairman of the Conference on Ethical Standards in Government held at the University of California. Presently, he is Vice- Chairman of the Committee on Improvement of Administrative Proce- dures, A.B.A. In 1946 Professor Newman began teaching as a lecturer in law, Univer- sity of California, Berkeley. In 1950 he became a full professor. He has written articles for various law reviews and for the journal r1fLcgalEzlura- lirm. This year he is teaching legislation and administrative law, and is also giving a seminar in Legislation. Born: 1917, Eureka, California. During World War I he served in the Department of justice. From 1912 he taught consecutively at Harvard, Oklahoma, Tulane, Indiana, A.E.F. University, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Harvard, returning here in 1927. He was president of the Association of American Law Schools, 1947, was co-reporter for the Restatements of Agency, judgments, Restitution and Torts, is editor of the American Case Book Series and has complied casebooks on Torts and Agency. He now teaches Agency, Restitution and Torts. Born: 1880, Boston, Massachusetts. John's. LOUIS B. SOHN Professor of Law john Harvey Gregory Lecturer on World Organization After serving for six years as research associate to judge Hudson of the Permanent Court of International justice, Professor Sohn joined the Harvard Faculty in 1946. For several years he was the International Law editor ofthe American Bar Associationjournal. In 1945 he took part in the San Francisco Conference which drafted the Charter of the United Nations. In 1948 he prepared for the United Nations a Survey of Treaties for the Pacific Settlement of Disputes , and in 1950-51 he served as a legal officer of the United Nations Secretariat, where he edited two volumes of Luwr and Regulation! on life Regime ofllae High Seas. He is the author of Carer and Materialr in World Law, and co-author of Peace Through Dirarmmzzenl and Claarter Re11i.tirm. This year he is teaching courses in World Organization, and Interna- tional Trade and Investment. He also conducts seminars on Problems in the Development of World Order, International Protection and Promotion of Investment, Legal Problems of International Administration, and Inter- national Regional Organizations. SURREY Professor of Law Professor Surrey was research assistant to Professor Roswell Magill at Columbia Law School, 1932-33, followed by a brief practice in New York City. Then he started his government career: Attorney with the National Recovery Administration, Washington, D. C., 1933-35, Attorney with the National Labor Relations Board, 1935-375 associated with the Treasury De- partment 1937-39, principally as Tax Legislative Counsel, Special Counsel, 1951-52, King Subcommittee on Administration of the Internal Revenue Laws, House Committee on Ways and Means. He was appointed Professor of Law at the University of California School of Law at Berkeley, 1947-50. In 1949-50 he was a member of the American Tax Mission to-Japan. He is Chief Reporter for the American Law Institute's Income Tax Project and Director of the Harvard Law School International Program in Taxation. He is co-author, with Professor Warren of Columbia, of casebooks on Federal Income Tax, and the Federal Gift and Estate Tax.
