ROBERT ERNEST KEETON Ezra Ripley Thayer Teaching Fellow Mr. Keeton, an Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University, received his professional and undergraduate training at the University of Texas. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945, during which time he was Flag Secretary to Rear Admiral Mullinix, Commander Carrier Division 24, and Assistant Flag Secretary to Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Before he entered the Navy and on his return from service, Mr. Keeton was in practice in Houston, Texas, his special helds being personal in- jury and insurance litigation. In 1951, he received an appointment to the faculty of Southern Methodist. He has also served as Co-Chairman of the Special Committee on Small Loan Legislation, State Bar of Texas. WALTER BARTON LEACH Story Professor of Law Professor Leach served as Secretary to Mr.Justice Holmes, 1924-25, then took up trial practice in Boston, teaching law at night at Northeastern Law School. In 1929 he joined the Harvard Law School faculty, continuing in law practice consistent with academic duties. He has been a Visiting Pro- fessor at Oxford and at the University of Colorado. Professor Leach is author of casebooks on Future Interest, Wills, and fwith Professor Casnerl Property I, a Handbook of Massachusetts Evi- dence, Property Restatement chapters on powers of Appointment and Statutes of Limitations, American Law of Property Cco-authorj and articles on various legal and other subjects. An infantry private in 1918, Professor Leach served in World War II in the Army Air Forces. He is now a Brigadier General in the USAF Reserve and Consultant to the Air Force. I-Ie teaches Property I and the course in Wills, Future Interests, and Estate Planning in the third year. Born: 1900, Boston, Massachusetts. B.B.A., 1940, L.L.B., 1941 University of Tr xas LOUIS LOSS - Professor of Law After undergraduate work at Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, Professor Loss entered Yale Law School in 1934 and received his law degree in 1937. He joined the legal staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission and in 1948 became the Commission's Associate General Counsel. From 1947 to 1952 he was a Visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School giving a seminar in SEC Aspects of Corporate Finance. He had published a number of articles in legal and financial periodicals and a book on Semrilier Regulation, published in 1951. This year Professor Loss is teaching Corporation I, Corporations IIA, and a seminar in Regulatory Aspects of Corporate Finance. Born: 1914, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. MANLEY OTTMER HUDSON Bemis Professor of International Law Professor Hudson began teaching at Harvard in 1918. In 1919 he served on various commissions at the Paris Peace Conference, and as a member of the Secretariat of the League of Nations. He was an adviser to the United States delegation at the Conference for the Codification of International Law at The Hague in 1930. A member of the Permanent Court of Arbitra- tion from 1933 to 1945, he was elected ajudge of the Permanent Court of Internationaljustice in 1936 and served to 1946. In 1948 he became a mem- ber of the United Nations International Law Commission, and later served as its Hrst chairman. Among his publications are Inrernational Legirlation Q9 volumesj, World Court Report C4 volumesj, and a standard treatise on the World Court. He was President of the American Society of International Law 1949-1952. judge Hudson is on leave of absence during 1953-54. Born: 1886, St. Peters, Missouri. LOUIS LEVENTHAL JAFFE Byrne Professor of Administrative Law Professorjalfe graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1928. He was an editor of the Law Review. After three years of general practice in San Francisco, he returned for graduate study and was awarded the S.j.D. degree in 1932. He served as law clerk to Mr. Justice Brandeis 09335, and with the Na- tional Labor Relations Board f1935J. In 1936 he became professor oflaw at the University of Buffalo Law School and was later appointed Dean. At Harvard he is teaching Administrative Law and a seminar in Administrative Law. His doctorate thesis for the S.J.D. degree, Judicial Aspects of Foreign Affairs was published as one ofthe series of Harvard Studies in Adminis- trative Law. BENJAMIN KAPLAN Professor of Law A graduate of Columbia Law School, Professor Kaplan practiced law in New York from 1933 to 1942. In four years of service in the Army he was first a member of the legal staff of the Army Service Forces dealing with procurement matters and later joined the staff of Mr.JusriceJackson in the Nuremberg prosecution. After a brief return to practice with his firm, he joined the Harvard Law Faculty in 1947 and was appointed Professor in 1948. In 1953 he joined with Professor Field in publishing a Casebook on Civil Procedure. This year he is teaching Civil Procedure and Contracts and is conducting a seminar in Legal Problems of Authors and Publishers. Born: 1911, New York, N. Y. JAMES ANGELL MACLACHLAN Professor of Law Professor MacLachlan practiced law in Chicago from 1916 until 1924, except for a tour as Captain of Field Artillery during World War I. In 1924 he joined the Harvard Law School Faculty. As a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference he has been active in drafting amendments to the Bankruptcy Act embodied in the Chandler Act of 1938 and in subsequent legislation. During World War II he served in Washington, D. C., as Special Counsel for the O.P.A., Assistant Solicitor of the War Relocation Authority, and Contract Renegotiator for the U. S. Maritime Commission. He changed the spelling of his name by court decree in 1938, correcting an error made in Scotland about 1835. He edited two editions of McLaugh- lin's Carer on the Federal Anti-Trml Law and co-edited several editions of Carer on Credilorlr Riglm with John Hanna. He is teaching two courses in Creditors Rights, a section of Property I, and a seminar on Security. Born: 1891, Ann Arbor, Michigan. A.B., 1912, University of Michigan, LL.B., 1916, Harvard. WILLIAM EDWARD MCCURDY Professor of Law After graduation from Harvard, Professor McCurdy was secretary to Mr. justice Brandeis in 1922-23. He has been on the Law School Faculty since 1923, and has also taught at the University of Wisconsin and in summer sessions at Cornell, North Carolina, and Texas. He was a member of the American Law Institute's Groups for Restatements of Contracts, Restitu- tion, and Torts. In 1945-46 Professor McCurdy was Special Advisor to the Director of the Legal Division, U. S. Group C.C. Clater Office of Military Government for Germany, and Chief of the Legislation Drafting Section. From 1947-49 he was successively Chief of the Legal Advice Branch, Associate Director and Acting Director of the Legal Division, OMGUS. He is editor of Carer on Perrom and Domertic Relations and Carer on Saler fwith Professor Willistonj. Professor McCurdy is teaching Contracts, Domestic Relations, and seminars in Administration ofjustice in Occupied Territories and Family Law. Born: 1903, Augusta, Georgia. JOHN THEODORE MCNAUGHTON Assistant Professor of Law After Professor McNaughton received his A.B. from DePauw University in 1942, he was commissioned in the United States Navy, serving until 1946 in both the Atlantic and Pacihc Theaters. During that time, he re- ceived a Commendation from Secretary Knox for gallant conduct under fire. He entered Harvard Law School in 1946 and was graduated magna rum laude in 1948. While at the Law School, he was Case Editor for a portion of Volume 61, Harvard Law Review. Professor McNaughton was a Rhodes Scholar and also served in the General Counsel's Ofiice of E.C.A. in Paris. On his return from Europe, he became Editor and legal counsel to the Pekin flllinoisj, Daily Timer, of which he is a co-owner. In 1952, Professor McNaughton was a candidate for the United States Congress. Professor McNaughton is teaching both Commercial Law and Evidence. Born: 1921, Bicknell, Indiana.
