WILLIAM COVINGTON HARDEE Professor of Law Professor Hardee came to the Law School as a student in 1940. In 1942 he went on active duty in the United States Naval Reserve. He served for four years, including overseas duty in the European Theater, and is pres- ently a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. In 1946 Professor Hardee returned to the School to complete his legal training and a year later commenced practice in the Boston Hrm of Ropes, Gray, Best, Coolidge and Rugg. With Professor Amory he published a second edition of Marerialr on Awomztizzg in 1953. This year he is teaching Accounting, Corporations and Agency. Born: 1919g Florence, South Carolina. Professor of Law After receiving his S.j.D. degree in 1931, Professor Hart served for a year as secretary to Mr.-justice Brandeis, returning in 1932 as a member of the Harvard Law Faculty. In the year 1937-38 he was on leave of absence to act as attorney for the Oflice of the Solicitor General, in 1940-41 he was special assistant to the Attorney General attached to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Professor Hart was Associate General Counsel for Price in the O.P.A. from 1942 to 1945 and General Counsel in the Ollice of Economic Stabiliza- tion in 1945-46. He is the author of numerous articles in the field of public law and is now teaching Federal Courts and Federal System, Legislation, and Criminal Law. Borng 1904, Butte, Montana. A.B., 1926, LL.B., 1930, S.j.D., 1931, Harvard. MARK DEWOLFE HOWE Professor of Law From 1933 to 1934 Professor Howe was secretary to Mr..Iustice Holmes and then entered practice in Boston. He was with the Law School of the University ofBu1Talo from 1937 to 1943 first as professor and later as Dean. Professor Howe served as Colonel in World War II with the American Military Government and with the Civil Affairs division of the War De- partment. GEORGE KNOWLES GARDNER J . Profes sor of Law Professor Gardner began the practice of law in Boston in 1914 and re- mained actively occupied in the profession for a period of fourteen years. From 1921 until 1928 he served as an Instructor in Law at Northeastern University, becoming a member of the Harvard Law Faculty in the latter year. From 1942 to 1946 Professor Gardner practiced law in Boston and acted as Assistant Treasurer and Secretary of Taunton Coating Mills, Inc., of Taunton, Massachusetts. He is the editor of Carer ami Maleriair rm Corzlrarlf and author of several articles in legal periodicals. Born: 1891, Worcester, Massachusetts. A.B., 1912, LL.B., 1914, Harvard. SHELDON GLUECK Roscoe Pound Professor of Law Professor Glueck came to the Law Faculty in 1929 after several years teaching in the Social Ethics Department at Harvard. He had been Advisor to the American Law Institute in the drafting of the Youth Correction Authority Act and the Model Penal Codes, a member of the U. S. Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Rules of Criminal Procedure, U. S. Dele- gate to the International Prison Congress in 1930 and 1950, and Consult- ant to Mr.justice Robert H.Jackson and General William Donovan on the trial of war criminals. In 1952 he was appointed to the Roscoe Pound chair. Among Professor Glueck's books are Memal Diro rder and Ihr Criminal Law and The NllI'U7l1b0l'g Trial am! Aggratrizfe War. Professor Glueck has published many works in collaboration with Mrs. Glueck QDr. Eleanor Touroff Glueckj. CHARLES MONROE HAAR Assistant Professor of Law Professor Haar entered Harvard Law School in September 1941, but left shortly thereafter for a tour of duty in New Guinea and the Philippines as an ofhcer attached to the Office of Naval Intelligence. He resumed his studies in 1946 and graduated in 1948. After graduation Professor Haar was awarded a Sheldon Traveling Fel- lowship and spent a year in England. His book, Laz1flPla1111iz1g Law in a Free Society, followed this period of study. Since 1950 he has lectured at New York University teaching courses in Government Regulation of Business and Housing. He has been a consultant for the Town Planning Division of the United Nations. This year he is teaching a section of Property I, Trusts, a seminar in Land-Use Planning, and participating in a seminar at the School of Public Administration. Born, 1920, Antwerp, Belgium. MANLEY OTTMER HUDSON Bemis Professor of International Law Professor Hudson began teaching at Harvard in 1918. In 1919 he served on various commissions at the Paris Peace Conference, and as a member of the Secretariat of the League of Nations. He was an adviser to the United States delegation at the Conference for the Codification of International Law at The Hague in 1930. A member of the Permanent Court of Arbitra- tion from 1933 to 1945, he was elected ajudge of the Permanent Court of Internationaljustice in 1936 and served to 1946. In 1948 he became a mem- ber of the United Nations International Law Commission, and later served as its Hrst chairman. Among his publications are Inrernational Legirlation Q9 volumesj, World Court Report C4 volumesj, and a standard treatise on the World Court. He was President of the American Society of International Law 1949-1952. judge Hudson is on leave of absence during 1953-54. Born: 1886, St. Peters, Missouri. LOUIS LEVENTHAL JAFFE Byrne Professor of Administrative Law Professorjalfe graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1928. He was an editor of the Law Review. After three years of general practice in San Francisco, he returned for graduate study and was awarded the S.j.D. degree in 1932. He served as law clerk to Mr. Justice Brandeis 09335, and with the Na- tional Labor Relations Board f1935J. In 1936 he became professor oflaw at the University of Buffalo Law School and was later appointed Dean. At Harvard he is teaching Administrative Law and a seminar in Administrative Law. His doctorate thesis for the S.J.D. degree, Judicial Aspects of Foreign Affairs was published as one ofthe series of Harvard Studies in Adminis- trative Law. Professorjaffee was appointed to the Byrne chair in 1952. Born: 1905, Seattle, Washington. A.B., 1925,Johns Hopkinsg LL.B., 1928, S.,I.D., 1932, Harvard. BENJAMIN KAPLAN Professor of Law A graduate of Columbia Law School, Professor Kaplan practiced law in New York from 1933 to 1942. In four years of service in the Army he was first a member of the legal staff of the Army Service Forces dealing with procurement matters and later joined the staff of Mr.JusriceJackson in the Nuremberg prosecution. After a brief return to practice with his firm, he joined the Harvard Law Faculty in 1947 and was appointed Professor in 1948. In 1953 he joined with Professor Field in publishing a Casebook on Civil Procedure. This year he is teaching Civil Procedure and Contracts and is conducting a seminar in Legal Problems of Authors and Publishers. Born: 1911, New York, N. Y.
