Born in 1904 in East Cleveland, Ohio, Dean Griswold studied at Oberlin College where in 1925 he received both an A.B. and A.M. degree, before entering Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, he had a high average, and was elected President of the Law Review. He received his LL.B. in 1928, followed by an SJD. in 1929. He was admitted to practice in his native state in 1929, and began to practice in Cleve- land. However, he soon left for Washington where he served from 1929 to 1934 as Special Assistant to the Attorney General. In 1934, he was appointed to the Harvard Law School faculty, becoming a full professor in 1935. In 1946, he became Dean and since 1950 has also held the chair of Langdell Professor of Law. Besides running the administration of the -'ski swf .Mx .. Law School, Dean Griswold also teaches Federal Taxation. In the past the Dean also taught courses in Trusts, Conflicts of Laws, and Ad- ministrative Law. He is a recognized expert in the fields of Federal Taxation and Spend- thrift Trusts, and has published numerous articles and books, including Spefzdtlsrzifi Tram and Cam on Fezleml Taxation, co-editing Carer 011 Coufim of Lawx. He has been an adviser to the Restatements of Trusts, Restitution, and judgments, and has served as an adviser to the Treasury Department. President Pusey was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on April 4, 1907. After Graduation from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, he entered Harvard College, where he studied English and Comparative Literature. After graduation in 1928 with the A.B. degree magna cam laude, he spent a year in Europe, chiefly in France and Italy, and then became a teacher at the Riverdale Country School, outside New York City. He received the Master of Arts degree in 1932, and served as a part-time Assistant in History at Harvard during 1932-33. He spent the follow- ing year in Greece as Archibald Cary Coolidge Fellow. President Pusey first went to Lawrence College in 1935 as a Sophomore Tutor in an experimental program of liberal arts education. He completed his graduate work in ancient his- tory at Harvard in 1937, receiving his Ph.D. -l14l NATHAN MARSH PUSEY President of Harvard University He taught at Scripps College, Claremont, California, from 1938 to 1940, as Assistant Professor of History and Literature. In 1940, he joined the faculty of Wesleyan University to take Part in the development of new liberal arts courses for freshmen and sophomores. He became Associate Professor of the Classics at Wesleyan in 1943, and, during the war, taught physics to Naval V-5 students at Wesleyan. He was elected President of Lawrence Col- lege in 1944 and served there until his selection as Harvard's President in 1955. President Pusey is a member of the Harvard Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. LIVINGSTON HALL Vice Dean and Professor of Law Upon his graduation from the Law School, Professor Hall entered private practice in New York City and in 1931 was chosen to serve as Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He returned to the Law School in 1932 and was appointed Vice-Dean in 1939. During the war years he served as Regional Attorney for the O.P.A. in the Boston Area, and later with the Army Air Force in the Southwest Pacihc. For the past three years he has been chairman of the District Court Survey Committee on Reorganization of the District Courts of Massachusetts. His published writings include numerous contributions to legal peri- odicals, and Cam on Criminal Law and EVlfIH'L't'lIl6'l1l co-edited with Professor Glueck. This year he is teaching Agency and Criminal Law. Born: 1903, Chicago, Illinois. Ph.B. 1923, University of Chicagog LL.B. 1927, Harvard. DAVID FARQUHAR CAVERS Associate Dean and Fessenden Professor of Law Professor Cavers joined the Law School Faculty in 1946 and was ap- pointed Associate Dean in 1951. Previously he had taught here as an instructor for the year 1929-30, having practiced in New York before that. He then became Assistant Professor at the West Virginia University Col- lege of Law. From 1931 to 1945 he was Professor of Law at Duke Univer- sity and Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and at Yale University. Professor Cavers established and edited Law and Contemporary Problefm. During the war he served as Assistant General Counsel for Price and later as Associate General Counsel for Price in the O.P.A. Professor Cavers is teaching seminars in Public Utilities and Legal Education and is supervising the first year group work program. Born: 1902g Buffalo, New York. HARRISON STEEL D IMMITT Secretary of the Law School After graduation from the Law School, Mr. Dimmitt was for five years engaged in the practice oflaw in New York City. In 1935 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Law School and the following year became Secretary. He entered the Army in 1942 and was discharged as a Lieutenant- Colonel in February 1946. He was attached to the staff of General Dever's Sixth Army as a G.5 officer and later served with the United States Group Control Council in Berlin. Born: 1898g Denver, Colorado.
