President Pusey was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on April 4, 1907. After Graduation from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, he entered Harvard College, where he studied English and Comparative Literature. After graduation in 1928 with the A.B. degree magna cam laude, he spent a year in Europe, chiefly in France and Italy, and then became a teacher at the Riverdale Country School, outside New York City. He received the Master of Arts degree in 1932, and served as a part-time Assistant in History at Harvard during 1932-33. He spent the follow- ing year in Greece as Archibald Cary Coolidge Fellow. President Pusey first went to Lawrence College in 1935 as a Sophomore Tutor in an experimental program of liberal arts education. He completed his graduate work in ancient his- tory at Harvard in 1937, receiving his Ph.D. -l14l NATHAN MARSH PUSEY President of Harvard University He taught at Scripps College, Claremont, California, from 1938 to 1940, as Assistant Professor of History and Literature. In 1940, he joined the faculty of Wesleyan University to take Part in the development of new liberal arts courses for freshmen and sophomores. He became Associate Professor of the Classics at Wesleyan in 1943, and, during the war, taught physics to Naval V-5 students at Wesleyan. He was elected President of Lawrence Col- lege in 1944 and served there until his selection as Harvard's President in 1955. President Pusey is a member of the Harvard Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. He holds the honorary degrees of L.H.D. from Coe College f1948j and LL.D. from Wesleyan 09442, Ripon College 11949, and Yale fNovember 21, 19531 It is with great pleasure that the Law School welcomes the twenty-fourth President of Har- vard University.
