ARCHIBALD COX Professor of Law After graduation from Harvard Law School in 1937 Professor Cox was secretary to Learned Hand, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals. From 1938 to 1941 Professor Cox practiced law in Boston. He was appointed Visiting Professor in October, 1945, and Professor in 1946. During the spring term, 1947, he was Acting Vice-Dean. In 1941 he served with the National Defense Mediation Board and in December of that year joined the Office of the Solicitor General, Department of Justice, where he remained until 1943. He held the position of Associate Solicitor of the United States Department of Labor from 1943 to 1945. Professor Cox is now teaching Labor Law. He is also conducting a Labor Seminar. Born: 1912 in Plainfield, N. RICHARD HINCKLEY FIELD Professor of Law After fourteen years of practice in Boston, Professor Field joined the staff of the Office of Price Administration in 1942 as Regional Attorney in Boston. In December, 1943, he Went to Washington and served for three years as General Counsel of the O.P.A. In December, 1946, he joined the Harvard Law Faculty. GEORGE KNOWLES GARDNER Page eighteen Professor of Law Professor Gardner began the practice of law in Boston in 1914 and remained actively occupied in the profession for a period of fourteen years. From 1921 until 1928 he served as an Instructor in Law at Northeastern University, becoming a member of the Harvard Law Faculty in the latter year. From 1942 to October, 1946, Professor Gardner practiced law in Boston and acted as Assistant Treasurer and Secretary of Taunton Coating Mills, Inc., of Taunton, Mass. He is the editor of Cases and Materials on Contracts and author of several articles in legal periodicals. Born: 1891 in Worcester, Massachusetts. A.B., 1912, LL.B., 1914, Harvard.

ERNEST JOSEPH BROWN Professor of Law Professor Brown began the practice of law in Buffalo, New York, in 1931. After several years of general litigation work he devoted most of his time to tax and corporate matters. Beginning in 1937 he combined practice with teaching at the University of Buffalo Law School. From 1942 to 1945 Professor Brown was a Captain in the Office of Strategic Services. He came to the Law School in 1946 and is teaching Taxation and Constitutional Law. Born: 1906 at Lake Providence, Louisiana. A.B., 1927, Princetong LL.B., 1931, Harvard. DAVID FARQUI-IAR CAVERS Professor of Law Professor Cavers joined the Law School Faculty in 1946. Previously he had taught here as an instructor for the year 1929-30, having practiced in New York before that. He then became Assistant Professor at the West Virginia University Col- lege of Law. From 1931 to 1945 he was Professor of Law at Duke University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and at Yale University. Professor Cavers established and edited the Duke University Law School Quarterly. During the war he served as Assistant General Counsel for Price and later as Associate General Counsel for Price in the OPA. Professor Cavers is teaching seminars in Public Utilities and Prob- lems in the Public Control of Atomic Energy and is supervising the first year program of group work. Born: 1902 in Buffalo, New York. , B.S. in Economics, 1923, University of Pennsylvania, LL.B., 1926, Harvard. ANDREW JAMES CASNER Professor of Law Born: 1907 in Chicago, Illinois. Before coming to the Harvard Faculty in 1938, Professor Casner served on the Law School faculties of the following Uni- versities: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Texas, and Leland Stanford. He was a Colonel in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945. Professor Casner participated both as a reporter and as an adviser in the preparation of the Restatement of Property. He was also Reporter for the Uniform Property Act and has con- tributed a number of articles in the property field to legal period- icals. HENRY MELVIN HART, JR. Professor of Law After receiving his S.J.D. degree in 1931, Professor Hart served for a year as secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis, returning in 1932 as a member of the Harvard Law Faculty. In the year 1937-38 he was on leave of absence to act as attorney in the office of the Solicitor General, in 1940-41 he was special assistant to the Attorney General attached to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Professor Hart was Associate General Counsel for Price in the O.P.A. from 1942 to 1945 and General Counsel in the Office of Economic Stabilization in 1945-46. He is the author of numerous articles in the field of public law and is now teaching Federal Jurisdiction and Legislation. He also holds a seminar in Legislation. Born: 1904 in Butte, Montana. A.B., 1926, LL.B., 1930, S.lI.D., 1931, Harvard. MARK DEWOLFE HOWE Professor of Law From 1933 to 1934 Professor Howe was SCCl'Ctary to Mr. Justice Holmes, and then entered practice in Boston. He was with the Law School of the University of Buffalo from 1937 to 1943, first as professor and later as Dean. Professor Howe served as Colonel in World Wilt II with the American Military Government and with the Civil Affairs Division of the War Department. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Harvard. He was editor of the Holmes-Pollack Letters Q1941j and Touched with Fire C1946j. He teaches American Legal History, and Constitutional Law at the Law School, and Structure and Nature of Law in Harvard College. Born: 1906 in Boston, Massachusetts. A.B., 1928, LL.B., 1933, Harvard. BENJAMIN KAPLAN Professor of Law Professor Kaplan practiced law in New York from 1933 to 1942, engaging chiefly in Appellate Court cases. He entered the Army in 1942 and in 1945 joined the oilice of the Assistant Secretary of War for duty with Mr. Justice Jackson, United States Chief of Counsel for the Prosecution of Axis Criminality. He joined the Harvard Law School Faculty in the spring of 1947 and was appointed Professor early in 1948. Professor Kaplan is now teaching Procedure and Contracts. Born: 1911 in New York, New York.
