ERNEST JOSEPH BROWN Professor of Law Professor Brown began the practice of law in Buffalo, New York, in 1931. After several years of general litigation work he devoted most of his time to tax and corporate matters. Beginning in 1937 he combined practice with teaching at the University of Buffalo Law School. From 1942 to 1945 Professor Brown was a Captain in the Office of Strategic Services. He came to the Law School in 1946 and is teaching Taxation and Constitutional Law. Born: 1906 at Lake Providence, Louisiana. A.B., 1927, Princetong LL.B., 1931, Harvard. DAVID FARQUI-IAR CAVERS Professor of Law Professor Cavers joined the Law School Faculty in 1946. Previously he had taught here as an instructor for the year 1929-30, having practiced in New York before that. He then became Assistant Professor at the West Virginia University Col- lege of Law. From 1931 to 1945 he was Professor of Law at Duke University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and at Yale University. Professor Cavers established and edited the Duke University Law School Quarterly. During the war he served as Assistant General Counsel for Price and later as Associate General Counsel for Price in the OPA. Professor Cavers is teaching seminars in Public Utilities and Prob- lems in the Public Control of Atomic Energy and is supervising the first year program of group work. Born: 1902 in Buffalo, New York. , B.S. in Economics, 1923, University of Pennsylvania, LL.B., 1926, Harvard. ANDREW JAMES CASNER Professor of Law Born: 1907 in Chicago, Illinois. Before coming to the Harvard Faculty in 1938, Professor Casner served on the Law School faculties of the following Uni- versities: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Texas, and Leland Stanford. He was a Colonel in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945. Professor Casner participated both as a reporter and as an adviser in the preparation of the Restatement of Property. He was also Reporter for the Uniform Property Act and has con- tributed a number of articles in the property field to legal period- icals. WARREN ABNER SEAVEY Bussey Professor of Law In 1906 Professor Seavey organized the Law School of Pei Yang University, China. From 1912 to 1920 he served con- secutively at Harvard and on the faculties of the Universities of Oklahoma, Tulane, and Indiana. He was president of the Asso- ciation of American Law Schools, 19473 was co-reporter for the Restatements of Agency, Judgments, Restitution and Torts, is editor of the American Case Book Series and has compiled case- books on Torts and Agency. He now teaches Agency, Restitution and Torts. Born: 1880, Boston, Massachusetts. ROBERT AMORY, JR. Professor of Law Professor Amory spent two and one-half years with the firm that is now Cahill, Gordon, Zachry and Reindel in New York City, specializing in corporate and anti-trust matters. His active military service began in January, 1941, as a private and took him through New Guinea, New Britain and most of the Philippines as a battalion and finally a regimental commander of amphibian engineers. For six months in 1946 he served as assistant treasurer of a textile mill and then joined the faculty of the Harvard Law School. Professor Amory was elected to the Cambridge School Board last year. Page sixteen ROBERT BRAUCHER Professor of Law During 1939-41 Professor Braucher worked primarily on liti- gation with the New York firm that is now Hughes, Hubbard 85 Ewing. He enlisted in the army as a flying cadet in April, 1941, and served as a fighter pilot in the India-Burma theatre and as an intelligence officer in the Pentagon and with the Strategic Bombing Survey in Japan. He returned to Harvard in 1946, but continues active in the Air Force Reserve. Since 1948 Professor Braucher has been a consultant to the New York Law Revision Commission. He is the author with Charles Corker of the text Introduction to Commercial Law and the editor of a Casebook on Commercial Law. This year he is teaching Commercial Law, a seminar on Government Contracts, and a law course at the Harvard Business School. Born: 1916, New York, New York. ARCHIBALD COX Professor of Law After graduation from Harvard Law School in 1937 Professor Cox was secretary to Learned Hand, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals. From 1938 to 1941 Professor Cox practiced law in Boston. He was appointed Visiting Professor in October, 1945, and Professor in 1946. During the spring term, 1947, he was Acting Vice-Dean. In 1941 he served with the National Defense Mediation Board and in December of that year joined the Office of the Solicitor General, Department of Justice, where he remained until 1943. He held the position of Associate Solicitor of the United States Department of Labor from 1943 to 1945. Professor Cox is now teaching Labor Law. He is also conducting a Labor Seminar. RICHARD HINCKLEY FIELD Professor of Law After fourteen years of practice in Boston, Professor Field joined the staff of the Office of Price Administration in 1942 as Regional Attorney in Boston. In December, 1943, he Went to Washington and served for three years as General Counsel of the O.P.A. In December, 1946, he joined the Harvard Law Faculty. GEORGE KNOWLES GARDNER Page eighteen Professor of Law Professor Gardner began the practice of law in Boston in 1914 and remained actively occupied in the profession for a period of fourteen years. From 1921 until 1928 he served as an Instructor in Law at Northeastern University, becoming a member of the Harvard Law Faculty in the latter year. From 1942 to October, 1946, Professor Gardner practiced law in Boston and acted as Assistant Treasurer and Secretary of Taunton Coating Mills, Inc., of Taunton, Mass.
