WALTER BARTON LEACH Story Professor of Law Professor Leach served as Secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes, 1924-25, then took up trial practice in Boston, teaching law nights at Northeastern Law School. In 1929 he joined the Harvard Law School faculty, continuing in law practice as consistent with academic duties. Professor Leach is the author of casebooks on Future Interests, Wills and fwith Professor Casnerj Property Ig a Handbook of Massachusetts Evidence, Property Restatement chapters on Pow- ers of Appointment and Statutes of Limitations, and articles on various legal and other subjects. An infantry private in 1918, Professor Leach served in World War II in the Army Air Forces. He is now a Brigadier General in the USAF Reserve and Consultant to the Secretary of the Air Force. He teaches Property I, and Property II and the research course in Property III. Born: 1900, Boston, Massachusetts. AUSTIN WAKEMAN SCOTT Dane Professor of Law Professor Scott was appointed as an instructor in the Harvard Law School in 1909, and as an assistant Professor in 1910, after a year of practice in New York City. He was Acting Dean of the Law School from 1915 to 1916, and has held the Story and Dane Chairs. In 1928 Professor Scott was President of the Association of American Law Schools. He was reporter for the Restatements of Trusts and of Resti- tution CPart IIJ as well as co-reporter with Professor Seavey of the Restatement of Judgments. He also drafted the Uniform Fiduciaries Act, has edited casebooks on Trusts, Civil Procedure and judicial Remedies, and is the author of various legal mono- graphs. In 1939 he published his treatise on the law of Trusts. Professor Scott is now teaching Procedure and Trusts. Born: 1884 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. A.B., 1903, Rutgers, LL.B., 1909, Harvard. JOHN MACARTHUR MAGUIRE Royall Professor of Law Professor Maguire was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1911 and practiced in Boston. During World War I he served in the Department of Justice. He came to the Harvard Law School in 1923. In 1938 and again in 1943 he Was a consulting expert with the United States Treasury Department. Professor Maguire has been vice-chairman of the American Bar Association Committee on Jurisprudence and Law Reform. He was Assistant Reporter of the Model Code of Evidence, and is a Special Consultant on the Income Tax Project of the American Law Institute. For nearly 25 years Professor Maguire was Legal Adviser to the American Association of University Professors on problems of academic freedom and tenure. He has edited case- books on Taxation and Evidence, and has written a short textbook on Evidence. Professor Maguire is teaching Evidence,,State and Local Tax- ation and Special Tax Problems. SI-IELDON GLUECK Roscoe Pound Professor of Law Professor Glueck came to the Law Faculty in 1929 after several years' teaching in the Social Ethics Department at Harvard. He has been Adviser to the American Law Institute in the drafting of the Youth Correction Authority Act, member of the U. S. Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Rules of Criminal Procedure, United States Delegate to the International Prison Congresses in Prague f1930j and The Hague f1950j, and Con- sultant to Mr. Justice Robert H. Jackson and General William Donovan on the trial of war criminals. Professor Glueck was appointed to the Roscoe Pound chair this year. Among Professor Glueck's books are War Crimimzls: Their PI'OXf'l'llfi0l1 and P1n1isl1mr'11f, and The N1ll'f'l7I!7l'l'tQ Trial am! Ag- gre.vxiz'e Wfar. MANLEY OTTMER HUDSON Bemis Professor of International Law Professor Hudson has taught at Harvard since 1919. After serving on various commissions at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, he became a member of the Secretariat of the League of Nations. From 1933 to 1945 he was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. From 1936 to 1946, he was a judge of the Permanent Court of International Justice at The Hague. In 1948 the General Assembly elected him a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations and he was its first Chair- man. Among his numerous publications are International Legis- lation, and the standard treatise on The Permanent Court of International Justice, 1920-1942. Professor Hudson gives a course in International Law and a seminar in International Law Problems. Born: 1886 in St. Peters, Missouri. Page fourteen LOUIS LEVENTHAL JAFFI: Byrne Professor of Administrative Law Professor Jaffe graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1928. He was an editor of the Law Review. After three years of general practice in San Francisco, he returned for graduate study and was awarded the S.J.D. degree in 1932. He served as law clerk to Mr. Justice Brandeis C1933j, and with the National Labor Relations Board C1935j. In 1936 he became professor of law at the University of Buffalo Law School and was later appointed Dean. At Harvard he is teaching Torts, Admin- istrative Law and a seminar in Administrative Law. His doctorate thesis for the S.J.D. degree, Judicial Aspects of Foreign Affairs, was published as one of the series of Harvard Studies in Administrative Law. WARREN ABNER SEAVEY Bussey Professor of Law In 1906 Professor Seavey organized the Law School of Pei Yang University, China. From 1912 to 1920 he served con- secutively at Harvard and on the faculties of the Universities of Oklahoma, Tulane, and Indiana. He was president of the Asso- ciation of American Law Schools, 19473 was co-reporter for the Restatements of Agency, Judgments, Restitution and Torts, is editor of the American Case Book Series and has compiled case- books on Torts and Agency. He now teaches Agency, Restitution and Torts. Born: 1880, Boston, Massachusetts. ROBERT AMORY, JR. Professor of Law Professor Amory spent two and one-half years with the firm that is now Cahill, Gordon, Zachry and Reindel in New York City, specializing in corporate and anti-trust matters. His active military service began in January, 1941, as a private and took him through New Guinea, New Britain and most of the Philippines as a battalion and finally a regimental commander of amphibian engineers. For six months in 1946 he served as assistant treasurer of a textile mill and then joined the faculty of the Harvard Law School. Professor Amory was elected to the Cambridge School Board last year. Page sixteen ROBERT BRAUCHER Professor of Law During 1939-41 Professor Braucher worked primarily on liti- gation with the New York firm that is now Hughes, Hubbard 85 Ewing. He enlisted in the army as a flying cadet in April, 1941, and served as a fighter pilot in the India-Burma theatre and as an intelligence officer in the Pentagon and with the Strategic Bombing Survey in Japan. He returned to Harvard in 1946, but continues active in the Air Force Reserve. Since 1948 Professor Braucher has been a consultant to the New York Law Revision Commission. He is the author with Charles Corker of the text Introduction to Commercial Law and the editor of a Casebook on Commercial Law. This year he is teaching Commercial Law, a seminar on Government Contracts, and a law course at the Harvard Business School. Born: 1916, New York, New York.
