,4 Mvssngcfram the Dean Gentlemen: You men came to the School with the feeling that you had made a contribution in a great struggle fought, as Mr. Conant has said, to turn back the tide of tyranny in freedom's darkest hour. You came also with the hope that in the future you would be able to live your own lives in an atmosphere of peace and good will in a society where each individual would have the opportunity of acquiring for himself and his family the rewards of character, enter- prise and ability. VVithin this first year following the cessation of hostilities, however, we have all realized that as yet we have no real peace. People in many lands, our own included, are worried by their feel- ing of fear and frustration, by their concern lest a growing conflict in ideals carry us into an even darker hour. Furthermore, we know there are conflicts within our own country which ,tend to undermine our established institutions, overthrow our system of private enter- prisel, stifle competition, and limit opportunity for the individual. And I emphasize opportunity, for I believe that the freedom of opportunity provided in this country for young men to amount to something under their own power is one of our greatest heritages. Individual opportunity has been offered here in greater abundance than in any other country in the world, and as we have followed the rewarding road of risk, venture, and opportunity, America has grown great. These strange forces from without as well as within must be met and met squarely by this country if we are to preserve our free society. In this encounter we will need great leadership, a far more literate and responsible leadership than we have known. Much of that leadership must be provided by the business com- munity, by men with courage and wisdom and integrity, men who appreciate the power of human aspirations as well as the sig- nificance of facts. This, gentlemen, is the challenge to you, as you leave the School to take your place in the business Community. Yours is the opportunity and responsibility to help provide an enlightened leadership which will preserve for our children and our children's children the opportunities of free men. DONALD K.
