ill!! llEilll'S MBSSHUE Students of the Harvard B11.s'1'11e.v.s School: lYithin the last one hundred and fifty years, a comparatively short period in the span of history, this country has been trans- formed from a vast wilderness into the greatest industrial civiliza- tion the World has ever known. By its very nature. the sudden development of our great industrial organizations has involved the element of change-change in the ways of living and thinking, in the kinds of work, and in the complexion of social groups. Scien- tific discoveries and technological progress, the catalyzers of our industrial system, possess the inherent elements of disorganizing force. In the society of their creation, our business leaders have been masters at technocracy, but many of them have been ap- prentices at human relations. I believe it is clear that if We are to preserve our traditional system of free enterprise in a future which is clouded by the reality of War, the business men of our nation must present to the country a new kind of leadership. They must recreate the bases for stability by intelligent administrative action based upon an understanding of the structure of society and the nature of human beings. It is Well that you men have taken time at the outset of your business career to study some aspects of the administrative problem confronting our business leaders, for in entering the profession you must accept this challenge: if our democracy is to be preserved in the face of constantly accelerating change, a greater sense of responsibility and a better and more permanent basis for human collaboration must be developed. These things are particularly important when the nation faces the threat of War. YYALLACE B. DONHAM Dean
