The DC6I1.S Message Students of the H Cl'I UCl'I'6l Business School: As societies have matured and generated within themselves forces tending toward disintegration, the need for men with a professional attitude towards their work has become more pressing. The service of men whose energies are directed beyond the lure of immediate material gain has prolonged and enriched the life of the groups of which they are a part. You are living in a society whose life blood is drawn from its industrial and commercial resources, and it is among business men that the high standards of a pro- fessional class are particularly important. Our democratic society cannot succeed in the long run if its business affairs are not carried on by competent men to a reasonable success. Failure of business to achieve this success brings with it difficult problems concomitant with permanent unemployment. Such weakening of our business structure, if uncorrected, threatens far reaching changes in our democratic way of living. To maintain our form of government men must have jobs and establish them- selves as part of the social and economic life of the nation. You are preparing here not only for business careers, but in a larger sense for the career of life. You are a select group chosen because you appear well adapted to the training this School offers. In these troubled times the business problems you will be called upon to face as you follow your chosen career of business will be of a complex and dynamic nature. Time alters conditions and many problems met in the future will be of an entirely different character from those you will study now. It is therefore important that your work here be a study of approaches rather than solutions. To meet these challenges of business you can best serve yourselves and society by approaching them with a professional frame of mind. In working towards this no effort can be immaterial, in the winning of it there is no place for defeatism. WALLACE B. DONHAM Dean
