History of the Bifsiness 5611001-Co11tz'nued The instruction in the school is, so far as practicable, con- ducted on the case system, based on class-room discussion and frequent written reports on specific problems studied in the varied forms in which they occur in actual business. The degree awarded upon completion of the two year course is that of Master in Business Administration. The school will grant a Degree with Distinction to students maintaining a general average of 80fZ, for the two years, with an average of not less than 8091, in the second year. A Degree with High Distinction will be granted only to those having a considerably higher scholastic standing. An alternative method of studying for Distinction degrees is offered to second year men who have high first year records and are approved by the Dean. Except for the required course in Business Policy, men electing this plan are responsible to a tutor and tutorial board rather than to individual instruc- tors, and will have greater freedom in planning and conducting their work in chosen Helds subject to the approval of the board. For students who intend to teach business subjects and for those who plan to conduct scientific research in business, the school offers a course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Com- mercial Science, the completion of which normally requires not less than three years. The school is national in its contacts with business men, and the location in industrial New England affords an opportunity for observing business methods. The school draws students from international sources. It is believed that the intimate associa- tion with men of varied collegiate training coming from many environments will be of distinct importance in later business life. There are 1074 students, from 206 colleges and 48 states, as well as 13 foreign countries, enrolled in the school for the academic year 1930-1931. Under the direction of Dean Wallace Brett Donham, the Business School is carrying forward its work of training its students to take their part in the development of business as a profession, and in promoting knowledge and in- tegrity in the art of finance, industry and commerce. 9
