K, This year is Mrs. Martin Tyskling's fortieth year with the school - forty years of striving for an even better learning environment. It all began in 1933 when she came to the old St. George School as a teacher, filled with idealism. She disliked the rigidity of the schools of that time, the forcing of students into predetermined slots and desired a more humane institution encouraging individualism. Be- coming director in 1934, Mrs. Tyskling now worked to implement her ideals into the school. The passing years presented many problems - contagions, war, prejudice, and lack of funds but Mrs. Tyskling weathered them all and retained her idealism. She now looks forward to the realization of her hopes for a new building with adequate recreation facilities before her retirement. This would indeed be a fitting conclusion of her long career with Harvard St. George. H I A W A w 1 1 1 A 4 1 4 w 1 1 4 i 1 1 .ov-fQ ?F ,NK W. L. Volchenboum Mr. Volchenboum is this year's new upper school principal and Latin f Greek teacher. However, he is not new to Harvard St. George. He has supplied the histori- cal comment, When I was here, boys wore ties and jackets, girls wore dresses and suits. This is in refer- ence to the period of 1964-'65 when he taught Latin at Harvard. During this time he was also working on his M.A. at Loyola University, majoring in philosophy and the classics. Mr. Volchenboum left Harvard the following year to teach at the University of Iowa and the University of Minnesota. In 1970, on a special program, he completed course work toward his Ph. D. at the University of Minnesota. Prom 1970 to 1973, Mr. Volchenboum taught Latin, Greek, and English at Marist High School with school administration work at Loyola. Born and raised in Chicago, Mr. Volchenboum is in- terested in classical music, antiques, cane and rush seat weaving, and in reading Ancient Greek. swim' W' 1 X, ll' I!! 2 3 I V . l 1 y J I Mrs. llen0 U Mrs. Allen, veteran of the old St. George School, is not only lower school principal, but also guidance supervisor this year. And with me, so shall humankind advance. Thus it is not within the bounds of reason to assume that much further contact with those with whom Ihave shared the past four years will be had. If disbanding was in my power, I would issue absolute denial. Yet in the microcosmic Earth lies much that must and shall be uncovered to provoke all Man's childhood's end. And in tandem science and humanity shall override the realm of unwrought things. I must be a part of that conquest - Planet III is not alone. ack . On Mondays and Tuesdays we attended all - day sessions at E.P.C., partici- pating in various activities. With our instructors, Ellen Sotol- off and Irene Katz, we went on many field trips and later returned to E ,F.C for activities related to that trip. Born in Herodsbury, Kentucky, she soon moved to Indianapolis and attended public schools there. Graduating from Butler University with honors, she later attended Radcliffe College where she received a Masters Degree in English. In 192 she was awarded her doctorate in English and English Literature from the University of Chicago. In addition to having been a Board member and chairman of the Board of Director's educa- tional committee, she has also been the chairman of the English Department at the Louisville Municipal College, Atlanta University, and the Chicago Teachers College. A valuable aid i.n curriculum problems and consultant over the years, the scholarship in her name, being considered by the Board of Directors, is indeed a fitting memorial.
