H ARTWICK HIGH SCHOOL THE HUB of 1954 Published by The Senior Glass i 2 I know a reasonable woman, Handsome and witty, yet a friend. Not warp’d by passion, awed by rumour; Not grave through pride, nor gay through folly; An equal mixture of good-humour And sensible soft melancholy. ‘Has she no faults then (Envy says), Sir?’ Yes, she has one, I must aver: When all the world conspires to praise her, The woman’s deaf, and does not hear. WE, THE CLASS OF ’54 DEDICATE THE HUB ADMINISTRATION Ptincipol Charles W. Bowler, Principal To The Class of 1954: It is with a great deal of pleasure and sadness that I see this class on the threshold of graduation. Each and everyone has worked hard to attain his high school diploma. I am very happy to see them graduate, but sad to see them go as they were a great class, studious yes, but more than that. Their actions and attitudes towards teachers, classmates, schoolwork, and community did a great deal to improve Hartwick High School. They were Freshmen when I arrived on the scene, and have helped me greatly in having a pleasant time while Principal at Hartwick. I should like to leave the class these few words of inspiration taken from a speech by J. C. Penny, President of the Penny Chain Stores: success in life does not depend upon genius. Any young man of ordinary intelligence, who is morally sound and not afraid of work, should succeed in spite of obstacles and handicaps, if he plays the game and keeps everlastingly at it. The possibilities are measured by determination .... ” To that may I add the little saying that I have often quoted to you. In life there is no such word as “can’t”. It just takes a little longer”. Good luck and God bless you. BOARD OF EDUCATION Orlo G. Burch Clifford C. Hull Robert B. Phillips Floyd Way man We wish to compliment the members of the Board of Education for devoting their time to us and our school. They hired five new teachers this year, Mrs. Ruth Yule, Mrs. Betty Tedesco, Mr. John Dennin, Mr. Eldaige St. Peter and Mr. William Carroll. The students are very much pleased with them. The Board member with the longest term of service is Floyd Wayman with thirteen years. New on the Board of Education was Martin Semrov. 6 %'he FACULTY 1st row L-R S. Bunn, E. Tedesco, C. Bowler, L. They were Charles Hadley, Leland Beach, Ann Patterson, Earl Roberts, Robert Ryan, and Joyce Persons. Mary Ann Domion came to us from the White House in the third grade. Frank McGrath joined us in the fourth grade from New York and also from New York came Virginia Mistretta who joined our class in the fifth grade. John Polulech came here from East Spring- field in the eighth grade. On entering the ninth grade, with Mr. Sant Angelo as our advisor, we elected the following officers: President, Mary Ann Domion; Vice President, Allene Barney; Secretary, Charles Hadley; Treasurer, Leland Beach. We eagerly began earning money for our Senior Trip of ’54. Our First big moneymaking events were a raffle and a skating party. In our sophomore year with Leland Beach as President, Ann Patterson as Vice President, Mary Domion as Secretary, and Chuck Hadley as Treasurer, and Mrs. Green as our Advisor, we continued our money raising campaign to enlarge our treasury. We sponsored movies, bake sales, and sold school emblems and pins. Because of our eagerness to make money we became known as the “money mad Sophomores.” After a wonderful summer vacation we entered our Junior year, looking forward to the coming events. Mrs. Green again was our advisor. Frank McGrath, President; Ann Patterson, Vice President; Mary Domion, Secretary; Joyce Persons, Treasurer. To start the year off we sold Christmas cards and stationary. In October for the Sesqui-Centennial we sold ash trays with seals on them and keys to the city. In May our Junior Prom was held at the hall and we danced to the music of Charles B. York. Thus, our Junior year was over and we were ready to become full-fledged seniors. Frank McGrath returned to the position of President, Earl Roberts was Vice President, Mary Domion was secretary, Leland Beach was treasurer and Mr. Bowler was our advisor. We also gained another member Irene Parker joined our class from Laurens. In the first few weeks of school we sold magazine subscriptions. Later on we held a “Jean Dance”, had a bake sale and sold candy during the noon hours. We also sold name plates for automobiles, with “Home of the Huskies”, Hartwick, New York written on them. Under the direction of Mr. Bowler and with the help of other High School students we presented a very successful Minstrel show. We presented it here, at Laurens, and also in the Oneonta Senior High School. In April, the Seniors presented “Peg O’My Heart”, a three act play. - Jlistor ¥ Leland Chauncey Beach “Lee” J.V.League All Star 1 Varsity Basketball 1,2,3,4 Co-Captain 4 Football 1,2,3,4 Baseball 1,2,3,4 Volleyball 1,2,4 Athletic Ass’n. 1,2,3,4 Dramatic Club 3,4 Projection Club 1,2 Oracle Staff 4 Hub Staff 3,4 Treasurer 1,4 President 2 Course: Business io Mary Ann Domion Mitzi” Varsity Cheerleading 1,2,3,4 Volleyball 1,2,3 Archery 4 Athletic Association 1,2,3,4 Oracle Staff 4 Hub Staff 4 Dramatic Club 1,2,3,4 Chorus 1,2 Class President 1 Class Secretary 2,3,4 Course: Business u Charles Hobart Hadley “Chuck” “Bump” J.V.Basketball 1 Varsity Basketball 2,3,4 Co-Captain 4 Football 1,2,3,4 Baseball 1,2,3,4 Volleyball 1,2,4 Athletic Ass’n. 1,2,3,4 Treasurer 3,4 Band 1,2,3,4 Chorus 1,2,3,4 Rythamaires 1,2,3,4 Dramatic Club 2,4 Projection Club 1 Oracle Staff 4 Hub Staff 2,4 Boys State 3 Secretary of Class 1 Treasurer of Class 2 Course; College Entrance 12 Francis Patrick McGrath “Frank” J V.Basketball 1 Varsity Basketball 2,3,4 Football 1,2,3,4 Captain 4 Baseball 1,2,3,4 Volleyball 1,2,4 Athletic Ass'n. 1,2,3,4 Dramatic Club 2,3,4 Projection Club 1,2 Oracle Staff 4 Hub Staff 3,4 Class President 3,4 Course: College Entrance 13 Virginia Catherine Mistretta “Ginger” J.V.Cheerleading 1 Varsity Cheerleading 2,3,4 Volleyball 1,2,3 Basketball 1,2,3,4 Softball 1,2,3,4 Archery Club 4 Athletic Ass’n. 2,3,4 Oracle Staff 3,4 Hub Staff 4 Dramatic Club 2,4 Chorus 1,2 Course; Business 14 13 Patricia Ann Patterson “Ann” J,V. Bob Ryan leaves to Don Brown his ability to write letters. Joyce Persons leaves her excess weight to Patsy Raime. Frank McGrath leaves his milk pail to Herb Schweitzer. Ann Patterson leaves her cheerleading position to her sister Betsy. Leland Beach leaves the car on Sunday afternoons to Jim Hurtubise for pleasure drives around the country. Mitzi Domion leaves to Jane Wart her ability to love’em and leave’em. Charles Hadley leaves to Roy Nersessian his refereeing ability. Irene Parker leaves her white sweater to Esther Schidzick. Earl Roberts leaves his ability to get along with Mr. Dennin to Bob Smith so Bob can stay out of trouble in class. Virginia Mistretta leaves her innocent look to Betty Polulech. John Polulech leaves to John Henningsen his ability to keep his class ring. The Senior Class leaves to Mr. Carroll the incoming senior class, in hopes that he can get as much co-operation from them as he got from us. Lastly, we appoint the future president of the incoming seniors, executor of this, our last will and testament. This will, signed, sealed, published, and declared by Frank McGrath. 21 a6A Imagine that you are looking at a copy of the 1970 “New York Times”. The headlines read: The president of the United States, Frank P. McGrath has finally gotten his purposed bill passed. His bill states that all U.S. Schools start at 10:30 A. M. to insure the students more sleep. OH! OH! Leland C. Beach, the real estate tycoon, and stock broker (who also has cornered the market on sharpening U. S. and Canadian lawn mowers) has recently sold the White House to the multi-millionaire Robert L. Ryan. It is to be the site of the 10 millionth “Ryan’s Roadhouse.” Here is an article about the famous model, Mitzi Domion. It says that she has just sold the Sunshine Cracker Company the right to use her name on a new type of cracker and oh yes, she’s just divorced another husband. Charles H. Hadley, noted historian and joke teller has recently relieved himself of his position as President of Columbia University. He wants more time to play golf and observe progress at his Briar Pipe Manufacturing Company. The Vice President of the United States, Miss Ann Patterson is suing one of her former classmates, Miss Joyce Persons for slander. It seems that Miss Persons was writing her weekly column “Advice to the Lovelorn” and mentioned a certain love affair of 1954. Irene G. Parker of the Parker Gum Company has just offered to be the first passenger of the newly developed flying cup. (What won’t they think of next?) One of the ads says that Earl C. Roberts, who monopolizes the new and used car industries, is about to manufacture the first super- sonic jet automobile. It will be on the market in 5 years. Its name is the Roberts Road Hog. Virginia Mistretta, noted comedian is leaving for New York in the morning from Hollywood to complete her new comedy “Ginger Come Home.” John C. Polulech, noted producer of T. V. programs has just announced his plans for a new show, “A Million A Minute.” Big John plans to donate personally. He has to get rid of it somehow. prophecy 24 UixruoX Sitting-Left to Right - Patricia Raimo, John Henningsen, James Hurtubise, Mr. John Dennin, Advisor. Standing-left to right- Robert Smith, Jane Wart, Donald Brown, and Betty Jane Polulech The Junior Class this year has sponsored several activities for their senior trip of ’55. During the latter part of ’53 Christmas cards were sold and a bake sale was held. A pancake supper held in February also proved to be a success. Along with the other classes of our school we also contributed to the new electric scoreboard that was recently installed in the gym. We furnished people for just about every activity that the school held during the year. John Henningsen, Don Brown and Jim Hurtubise were stalwarts in the band. They also took part in the Minstrel where Jimmy Hurtubise literally “put” them in the aisles singing. Betty Jane was assiting Mr. Bowler for the Minstrel and also helped Mrs. Yule with the Senior Play, “Peg of My Heart”. All the boys took part in athletics with John and Jim playing all three sports, Don playing baseball and basketball and Robby playing basketball. Betty Jane was a varsity cheerleader, while Jane Wart captained the J.V.cheering squad. 25 Sopficm te Sitting L. to R.: Mr. Carroll, N. Murdock, R„ Conklin, B. Bresee, S. Renwick, D. Turney. Elect an efficient staff and give them your support. Make your classmates feel that it is everyone’s yearbook. Let everyone have a job and take an active part. Don’t go ahead and do anything on your own. Make sure it’s what everyone wants. Most of all have and enjoy turning out your yearbook. Don’t make it a rigorous ordeal. We presented it at the Hartwick High School Gym, Laurens Central School, and Oneonta High School. The audiences thoroughly enjoyed the outstanding performance. The “end man’’ routine was hilarious and the chorus sang their music with a great deal of rhythm and sincerity. The show was under the direction of Charles Bowler and the music was under the management of Mr. Carl Bock. For the first time in the history of the school, these groups entered the New York State School of Music Association’s Spring Competition Festival held in Oneonta. The 41 members of the chorus and 10 members of the Rhythmaires enjoyed the experience and found it rewarding in many ways. The Chorus participated in the school’s Christmas program and the Rhythmaires, composed of ten boys and Mr. Bock, sang at an assembly program. d3and 1st Row: V. Williams, C. Smith, D. Brown, Mr. C. It had a very eventful year starting with a trip to Cornell University where it joined with 32 other bands to participate in a pre-game show at the Cornell-Rice football game. It continued by performing in half-time shows at two of the Huskies football games. The year was climaxed with the band’s entrance in the Sherburne Pageant of Bands again this year. Hartwick High School is currently enjoying the greatest prominence in football in the school’s history. As the five senior boys graduate they leave the team riding the crest of a 16 game winning streak. The 1953 Huskies with a record of 8 wins and no losses were led by Captain Frank McGrath. The non-league games they lost were to Cherry Valley and Worcester. The J.V.’s were led by Bill Bresee, Richard Mistretta and Jim McGrath. In the league, the Huskies will play two games each with South New Berlin, Guilford, Gilbertsville, Mt. Upton, and Laurens, aside from the league games the Huskies will endeavor to schedule games with Springfield, Cooperstown, and perhaps Morris. 43 All in all the Huskies are looking for a very successful season. Cheer Leaders L-R: M. Domion, A. Patterson, B. Polulech, G. Mistretta and J. Persons. This year four girls, Ann Patterson, Mitzi Domion, Ginger Mistretta and Joyce Persons ended their cheering career at H. H. S. For this season the cheerleaders acquired new uniforms. These were white corduroy, one pieced uniforms with maroon velveteen collars and cuffs. They also had small maroon “H” ’s on the front. The cheerleaders had a bakesale and sold coke at the home ballgames to help defray the expenses for the uniforms.
