' MAX SEARCY News of the death of Max Searcy during the summer vacation brought sorrow to the students of Hartwell. For three years Niax had been one of us in all of our activities. He had endeared himself to us by his cheerful disposition and by his whimsical nature. An inveterate reader of the funnies',, his life was colored by them. Frequently in the quiet of the study hall or the class- room, the voice of Donald Duck could be heard, and then we all knew that Max was concentrating on his work and forgetting himself. That so much life and vivacity, coupled with keen in- telligence, should be lost is a source of deep regret to all who knew him. An artistic Rookwood fountain has been installed in our building, dedicated to the memory of Max Searcy. This was made possible by the contributions from students of Hartwell and by the generous donations made by Max's family. IN MEMORIAM Hi O .4 ,y fl -W5 JV .iw-?1 X fl' if 40, JJ' FP-ji if 'I8 THE SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS We the Seniors , having completed our high school career, pause to reflect on our doings and misdoings. As freshmen, we organized homeroom clubs and assimilated some of the enthusiastic spirit of Hartwell. Athletics and social activities claimed that part of our time not taken up by class work, rounding out our school life. Perhaps we weren't the brightest class ever to grace the classrooms of old Hartwell, but we certainly have been one of the most active. As sophomores, with a whole year of experience behind us and the confidence that goes with it, we began to assert ourselves even more. YVe found that the more we participated in school activities the faster the time passed, and in no time at all we were juniors. That junior year was crammed with happenings. WVe boys distinguished ourselves by win- ning the intramural basketball toumament, and we girls were equally successful in intramural girls' sports. Early in the year we organized as a class and elected the following class officers: james Montague, president, Frank Hays, vice-president, Emma Jean Manns, secretaryg and Bill McArdel, treasurer. We chose Coach Art Reisner as our faculty advisor. During the year we held business meetings, enjoyed a picnic at Sharon VVoods, and, best of all, gave the seniors the first open prom in the history of Hartwell. Eagerly we looked forward to and planned for our big year as seniors. This has been one of our happiest years at Hartwell. First we elected our class officers: president, Albert Adamson, vice-president, Helen Sloneg secretary, Mary Speegg and treasurer, Bill McArdel, Then we selected our annual staff. After these groups had been chosen, we made plans to raise money to finance our annual and class night. After looking around for prospective sources, we decided that dances offered the best opportunity for raising money as well as pro- viding social activity. Seniors had given dances before, but ours was the first senior class to give a monthly dance. In the spring, under the supervision of Miss Betty O'Brien, we seniors gave an original literary program for the entire student body. Then came class night, and finally, graduation. We recall our four years at Hartwell with happy memories and some regrets. Some who started with us as freshmen have dropped out and several new faces have been added. With the shadow of war and the possibility of air raids, we reach the end of our school career wonder- ing what is next for us. Defense jobs? Army life? College? What will the next four years bring? . Wewonder------ -- L J F S , J LAURA AVERY Laura's the kind who is active yet quiet, And very sweet . . . you can not deny it. Immediately we began to plan for the yearls program. Selling candy at football and basketball games, giving a pic supper at Williamsdale Community House, selling magazine subscriptions and stationery, we obtained the needed amount of money for the annual junior-Senior Prom. The Prom was held at the University of Cincinnati Y.lNI.C.A. with Victor Adkins, orchestra furnishing the music. In athletics we were well represented, with some of our boys on the varsity teams, the girls carrying away honors on the volleyball and basketball courts, one of our members on the cheerleading squad, plus several representa- tives on the pep squad. The only class in the high school to have a one hundred per cent sale of defense stamps, not once but several times, was the junior boys' home room, sponsored by Mr. Nfiller. With the close of school came the selection of archbearers by the seniors, followed by daisy picking and the making of arches for the graduation exercises. Now weire looking forward to our big year as seniors. First Row - O. Brewer, Apking, B. Schaefer, C. Clark, R. Thomason, Bonta, C. Surtees, Baker, W1 Hunley, YV. Kuhn. Second Row - L. Hines, R. W R Y H Williams For the first time since our entrance into Hartwell, We the Sophomores began to take an active part in school affairs. We girls organized ourselves into a home room club, choosing Dorothy Minnich as president, Shirley Witham as secretary, and Inez Whitehouse as treasurer. Early in the year we sophomores became interested in music, and many of us could be found in the auditorium after school, singing in the chorus or playing in the new band. We were also active among the pep squad and cheerleaders. Some of us found our way into athletics, both boys and girls being well represented. We were prom- inent in the minstrel cast, in the chorus, and as soloists and dancers. With the advent of war came the sale of defense stamps. In our home rooms, we divided into teams to see who could set the Rising Sun . General,' Elma Hyslop and Admiral Inez Whitehouse commanded the girls, with General Robert Schuette and Admiral', Ralph Merritt leading the boys. Yes, we are finding our places in Hartwell life. You'll be hearing more from us soon. A rose Lunch hour among thoms 33 Since our initiation into high school life by the seniors, lVe the Freshmen have gradually become accustomed to Hartwell. We boys have entered whole-heartedly into athletics, the first class of freshmen boys to have such a large representation in sports for several years. We girls have proved to be some of the best green material in sports for some years, and hope to provide stiff competition next year. WVe freshmen are also prominent in the chorus and band. Although we have accomplished little else than an adjust- ment into our new life, we feel that the future holds much for us and look forward to it with enthusiasm. First Row - B. Gorham, T. Q . l seated - L. cooper, president. Right to Left - B. Myers, J. Apking, J. Biemlan, E. Dearwesrer, treasurer, R. Kelly and Ann Henel, secretary. First, we bring you the Art League, an organization for the purpose of beau- tifying Hartwell's fine building and promoting the students! appreciation of art. To carry out this purpose, the home room representatives collect dues every Thursday morning. This group, chosen from the home rooms, comprises the president, Luther Cooper, secretary, Ann Hertelg treasurer, Esther Dearwesterg and other members including Robert Bierman, Billy Myers, Ben Tuttle, Rose Mary Kelly and Wanda Beach. The current year is evidence of the success of the Art League in bringing about an appreciation of beauty in the students. Backed one hundred per cent by the students, the committee has secured a second Rookwood fountain, which has been placed in the upper hall. As sponsor of the club, Miss Bartlett has made the work of the committee enjoyable as well as successful. 38 DEDICATION OF FOUNTAIN Introduction .....,..,. ART LEAGUE sm. 1 'l :2W' 1, , 1 MM.: JUII ANNOUNCERS And now, dear listeners, meet the group of H H S senior members who were responsible for bringing you this broadcast. Toiling early and late, this group of students gathered and compiled the information in this book, snapped and pasted pictures, wrote, revised, then wrote again the script to produce Wave Lengths of '42 . In the fall of the year, they engaged a photographer and an engraver. Then started a long search for a theme. After much discussion and heated debates, the theme of a radio broadcast was chosen. The stall' then Went to work on the continuity - and now you have it - Wave Lengths . First we have the editor- ial staff. To them belongs the literary part of the broadcast, the write-ups and the proof reading, which kept them up many a night. With great pleas- ure we introduce to you Virginia Brewer, editor, assisted by her co-workers Charles Glindmeier, Eve- lyn jolmson, Hilda Fettig, ,J Thelma Gajus, Mae Speeg and Luther Cooper. Next we have the art staff. The beauty of the book belongs to them, for they have labored tirelessly over lay- outs and drawings. Meet the art staff : Esther Dearwester, art editor, Billy Las- well, Miss Laura Noonan, art advisor, and Ben Tuttle. Our business staff worried many nights over whether or not this broadcast would be financed. YVithout their co- operation it would have been impossible to bring it to you. Here you see Charles Lindner busy checking subscriptions, while Mrs. Barnett, business advisor, and Artice Paul are trying to balance the budget, and Pauline YVetzeler is taking dictation from Eleanor Lutz, business manager. In the lower picture the -- members of the sports' 1- X . x 112, 'ff tt! staff, comprising Bob Ker- sey, Russell Porter, Char- -- f !. 4 les Lindner, and Mary ' - MeGuffey, are caught preparing their broadcast. Y' In spite of the bad wea- ther prevailing through- out the fall and spring, our photographers have succeeded in bringing you a wealth of material. We bring you those indefatig- able cameramen, Charles Auxier and Albert Adam- SOD. Last, but by no means least, come our faculty advisors. The experience and aid of these teachers have been invaluable in bringing you this broadcast. Mrs Scheck worked long and hard with the editorial staff, and received many a head ache for her efforts. Miss Noonan was driven nearly to distraction by lay-outs N one worried more over the finances of this broadcast than did Mrs. Barnett. To her we ran with our pecuniary problems which she always managed to solve. FRE CH CLUB i 4 Eff -L. In Inset: I. Scott, R. Hopkins, N. W'ilson. LOWER PICTURE: First Row - E. Hendren, W. Each month they prepare a different type of program includ- ing plays, various kinds of games, and the singing of songs en francais . Besides being enjoyable, these meetings help the pupils become more fluent in French, for the members are required to speak it during the meetings. An interesting project this year has been the editing of a French newspaper entitled Hier, Aujourd'hui, et Demainu. The paper contains news of interest to the entire school. The picture shows the class working on the paper. LTI CLB Turning the dial from the modern to the classic, we find the Latin Club in session under the sponsorship of Miss Bernice Bartlett, who has been successful in enlivening the study of this language for Hartwell students and emphasizing the importance of Latin as a foundation for all modern languages. It is with pride that we mention that the club is a member of the National Organization of the junior Classical League. Holding monthly meetings to promote an interest in the classics, the club plans appropriate programs for the various holidays - dramatizing plays, singing Latin verses, and reporting on phases of Roman life. The Latin Club members exchange Latin Christmas card greetings and Valentine salutations. Not to be forgotten are the refreshments which complete the meetings. First Row - M. Smith, M. Reising, T. Mooar, student teachers, acted as sponsors. 47 -Q-A 'Y' 09 x XX 9: erl Q 'YQ gg, ,V If fi 44 I 4 H L- stu, I Z iiif, 'ff if f , On December 24, the high school en- joyed Guest House - Exclusive , a timely one-act play showing how lonely Mrs. Kimble, the owner of a boarding house, tried to unite her paying guests into one happy family on Christmas day. Un- der the able coaching of Miss O'Brien, the cast, including Eva Weddle, George Meg- ginson, Jacqueline Bunner, lNfae Speeg, jim LeRoy and Thelma Gajus, gave a creditable performance of the characters responsible for bringing satisfaction to a lonely woman at Christmas. In April, the English IV classes pre- sented a program including two original plays, the reading of several original edi- torials, and the singing of original and Shakespearian ballads. The program was the result of the inspiring help and tech- nical direction offered by Miss O'Brien in her effort to afford her pupils the oppor- tunity of developing their talent and increasing their knowledge. After warming up its motors in a preliminary contest with a powerful Withrow formation, the Hartwell squadron took off on its annual fiight of football games. Throughout the first four games, against Electrical, West Carrolton, Lockland, and Automotive, the squad had clear fiying, unmarred except by the six points given to Lockland in an exciting night raid . These six points, however, went for naught when compared to the ninety-eight points piled up by our team during the same period. Suddenly our high-flying plane of victories hit an air-pocket, and we lost two games before the wings could be righted. The loss of the Walnut Hills games emptied our tanks, and the Wyoming game grounded us temporarily. After repairs had been made and the tanks refilled, our ship took off and had clear flying over Reading. YVe then headed into the last run towards North College Hill. With ceiling zero, visibility low and light precipitation, the squad fought its way to a thirteen-to-six victory, to land safely on home soil. just as one accident can ruin a round-the-world flight, our two accidents mined our chances for the two league championships, landing us in second place in both leagues. The flight was under the command of lNIr. Blillcr who, through three years of hard work and sacrifice, built up one of the finest squads ever to take the field for Hartwell. 58 CHEER LEADERS and PEP SQUAD After the first rush of school had quieted down, Mr. Evans announced cheer- leader try-outs. The largest number of contestants in years appeared in the gym to compete for cheerleaders. Five of this enthusiastic group, Virginia Brewer, Mattie Belle McCormick, Dorothy Minnich, Russell Carroll, and Robert Sims, were chosen to serve for the sport season. The others formed the first pep squad ever to make its appearance in Hartwell School. Under the supervision of Mr. Evans and the tutelage of Virginia Brewer, this group of girls learned to march and to form various letters. They added color and pep to the games. CHEERLEADERS - D. Beginning with Hithrow, they won two out of the three games with scores of 5-15, 15-6, 15-9. YValnut Hills, taking three defeats of 15-12, 15-6, and 15-3, were the next victims, followed closely by Building, which received 15-3, 15-4, and 15-7 set backs. Losing three games to Hughes, tallying 9-15, 8-15, and 12-15, the Hartwell team came back to defeat Electrical 15-6, 15-4, and 15-9, thus tak- ing second place in the City Volleyball League. In the City Tourna- ment, Hartwell was barely beaten out of first place by the Hughes team with a 12-15 score. The regular class teams had to be replaced by two large teams which were headed by Jacqueline Bunner and Viola Zins. Three closely contested games resulted in -Iacqulineis team winning 2 out of 3. Those who showed skill in the sport and attended faithfully, in spite of the inclement weather, were chosen for the honorary hockey team by Miss Gradolf and Mrs. Dondero, instructors, and Virginia Brewer, hockey manager. Under the direction of our instructors, Mrs. Dondero and Miss Gra- dolf, and basketball manager Evelyn Johnson, the freshmen learned the fundamentals of the game and the upperclass- men improved their knowledge and skill of the game. At the basketball play-day held at Walnut Hills, March 6, our girls met representatives from other city schools. The girls came out winning three out of four games from the schools they played, rounding out their basketball season very successfully. xi 1' -1 if Ll Miss Gradolf Caught OH' Guard 74 -.ffl GIRLS' BA EBALL Last on the sports' schedule is baseball. Elmwood Ballad-with apologies to our Elmwood Friends - by Ray Minks fAn Elmwood Boyl W'e're from down there in old Elmwood Where you never have the blues: Where the bandits steal the jitneys, And the marshalls steal the booze. Where the buildings horn the skyline. Where the populace is boost, Where they shoot men just for pastime, And the chickens never roost. W here the stickup men are wary, And the bullets fall like hailg Where each pocket has a pistol, And each pistol's good for jail. Where they always hang the jury, Where they never hang a man, Where, if you call a man a liar, You get home the best you can. Where the jitneys whizz about you. And the street cars barely creep, Where the burglars pick your pockets. While you lay me down to sleep . Where the big dogs have the rabies, And the rabbits have the fleas: Where the big girls, like the little ones, W'ear their dresses above their knees. Where you breeze out in the moming To give your health a chance, And say how you all to some fellow Who shoots big holes in your pants. Where wise old owls are afraid to hoot, And jailbirds are afraid to singg For it's h-1 down here in Elmwood, Where they all shoot on the wing. We did it last year, Juniors. Now it's your turn.
