By 1887, the community had grown so that it was neces- sary to provide larger quarters, and the large red brick building on the corner of Hartwell and Woodbine Avenues was built. It was there that Hartwell High School had its beginning. Hartwell School, now both an elementary and secondary school, continued to grow and progress. It became a part of the city school system in 1913, when Hartwell was annexed to Cin- cinnati. In 1925, the school, having again outgrown its quarters, moved to the beautiful building on Vine Street, its present site. Thus, Our School has grown from a small village school to a modern, progressive school of approximately one thousand students. It is now a complete educational unit from kindergarten through high school, offering the regular course of study required by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. By the end of the year, we had accustomed ourselves to our new surroundings and begun to take part in school activities. Next fall we organized into two groups, one for the boys and one for the girls, in order to gain experience in class activities. Our class also began taking part in athletics, social affairs and sponsored our own skating party As umors, we organized into one group and began our program of raising funds necessary to give a umor Prom In anuary, we mstltuted annual insurance, and in Mav we cllmaxed our years activities wlth the annual unlor Prom In our senior year, we began earlv in the fall, planning dances and working on the 1941 Hartwell Annual Now only fifty in number, our class nevertheless has sponsored monthly dances throughout the year, taken an active part in all school affairs, and published our annual on schedule As we leave the school and go out into the world, may these valuable experiences and associations be a preparation for an even greater success ln meeting the challenge of life before us C ass Offlcers ,gland Left to Right Mary jane Vortkamp fsecretaryj , Eugene Houser ffreasurerj Horace Howard KVICC Pres IdCl'lIl Arvil Brown fPres1dentJ . . . . t - J . . . . . . . . The 1940 YVarriors,', coached by Mr. Ernest Bliller, comprised one of the best balanced teams in Hartwell's recent pigskin history. The team, not studded with individual stars but made up of boys well trained in the fundamentals of team play, gave every opponent a stiff fight. The backfield, depending upon speed and deception for their punch, outscored opponents by thirty points, while a strong line, regarded by many as the best in the valley, played their positions well. However, the tean1's fumbles and mistakes at crucial moments accounted for the record of four wins and five defeats and wrested both the City Class B and the Valley Championships from its grasp. Bitter defeats by Lockland and North College Hill were perhaps the best evidence of this weakness.
