That Hartwell, the smallest high school in Cincinnati, was chosen to represent the Ohio schools in the annual state service at the XVashington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge, on May S, was, indeed. an honor particularly to the -Iuniors, Marion Howard and Ruth Leonard, who. collaborated in writing the tribute to Ohio read on that occasion, XY'ashington Memorial chapel is shown above, with insets of Marion Howard fleftj .md Ruth Leonard frightj. A Tribute To Ohio Many years ago the Indians, naming in the simple poetry of their language the rivers and lakes of this country, gave to one the appropriate name Ohio, meaning Beautiful River . The Father of Our Country, to whose memory this chapel has been dedi- cated, must have agreed with the red man's opinion of the river and the land surrounding it, for in 1770 he left his palatial Mount Vernon home in order that he might journey to Ohio, the new Western territory. There, with the aid of Captain William Crawford, he located a tract of 10,000 acres of land. During the darkest days of the Revolution, George Wash- ington often said that if the colonies should suffer defeat, he would establish his residence in Ohio, on the other hand, he fully expected if the colonies should gain their independence, that the seat of the new National Government would be in Ohio because of its central position. Although in this expectation Washington proved mistaken, Ohio, admit- ted into the Union in 1803 as the seventeenth state, has always been IFUC to his ideals and is now recognized as one of the most prosperous states in the nation.
