Although the boys played hard against every opponent, they usually came out at the wrong end of the scoreg but when pitted against teams of their own size and weight, they demonstrated very ably the fact that they could win. Against stronger teams, our boys made a poor show- ing, not only because of lightness in weight and smallness of size, but also because of the injuries incurred by some of the best players and the lack of reserve strength. During the season of 1934-1955 it ranked higher as a girls' sport than any other time since its introduction to Hartwell. Last September sixty-five girls enthusiastically practiced for and played in the inter-class gamesg in November a volunteer team went to the hockey play day at Western Hills, and there played a tie game with the Hughes teamg later on, Miss Grace Blasberg, coach, and Jane Hannah, hockey manager, carefully chose an honorary teamg then, in December, at a special assembly, Dr. Peaslee presented emblems to those girls who were chosen to represent Hartwell on the hockey field. Ralph Brasington, playing his fourth year as captain. did his part well in guiding the new boys to a goal of which the school is proud. A record of eight games won and six lost, and a score of 319 points for Hart- well against 291 points for opponents, is commendable for small Hartwell. Of the boys who formed the basketball team of 1934-1935, R. Brasington. W. Hensley, E. LeRoy, R. Cornn, and D. Benner will not return for a new season. The team of '55-'36 will have as a nucleus R. Hensley, M. Rebholz, H. Williams, G. Depoi, and F. Beaird. Ralph Brasington, already mentioned as captain of this team, is one of the few four letter men in any sport at Hartwell. For four years he has played in true Hartwell style, always striving for victory, but always practicing too the clean methods of play that are required of all athletes at this school. The boys are proud of Ralph as captain, player, and high-point man of the team . First Row LSeatedJ-A. Dorsey, Nl. Calder, T. Godbcy, R. Cloke, G. Spacht, K. Nunn. Second Row QSeatedj-XV. Hensley, R. STUDITNT llff That Hartwell, the smallest high school in Cincinnati, was chosen to represent the Ohio schools in the annual state service at the XVashington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge, on May S, was, indeed. an honor particularly to the -Iuniors, Marion Howard and Ruth Leonard, who. collaborated in writing the tribute to Ohio read on that occasion, XY'ashington Memorial chapel is shown above, with insets of Marion Howard fleftj .md Ruth Leonard frightj. A Tribute To Ohio Many years ago the Indians, naming in the simple poetry of their language the rivers and lakes of this country, gave to one the appropriate name Ohio, meaning Beautiful River . The Father of Our Country, to whose memory this chapel has been dedi- cated, must have agreed with the red man's opinion of the river and the land surrounding it, for in 1770 he left his palatial Mount Vernon home in order that he might journey to Ohio, the new Western territory. There, with the aid of Captain William Crawford, he located a tract of 10,000 acres of land. During the darkest days of the Revolution, George Wash- ington often said that if the colonies should suffer defeat, he would establish his residence in Ohio, on the other hand, he fully expected if the colonies should gain their independence, that the seat of the new National Government would be in Ohio because of its central position. Although in this expectation Washington proved mistaken, Ohio, admit- ted into the Union in 1803 as the seventeenth state, has always been IFUC to his ideals and is now recognized as one of the most prosperous states in the nation.
