your haul and Schools out schools out teacher let the mules out were two popular sayxngs w1th Thts was the year Walter Boll1nger was rn an automobtle accrdent on the way home from Ind rana and everyone 1n M1ss Kreflabers room wrote letters to htm Whlle he was 1n the hosprtal The th1rd grade found us berng 1nstructed by M1ss Cora Keller and M1ss Pearl Drushel Th1s year he newcomers were Charles Bowers Walter By ler Cathenne Stncklch Clara Troyer Susan Vad asz Ann Shuttleworth Vernon Sommers Ioan Tor ok Raymond Grlggy George K1ng Harry Ruth rauff Esther Hartman Mae Raber Walter Slabach Mary Patton and Mary Mole ln many of our re cesses dunng lh1S year we played Andy Over the agnculture burldlng and Susan Vadasz and Dueber Maurer were usually the captams and 1t 1S SG1d that there was usually a l1ttle cheatrng on Duebers team That year we all had qurte a ttme try1ng to learn our multrphcatron tables M1ss Hazel Hoffman and M1ss Cora Keller were the h1ckory suck sw1tchers rn the fourth grade The new noses rn our mldst th1s year were Tw1la Unsworth Wm Cavanah Myron Sm1th Ir O1 V1ll9 Norman Malmda Byler Anna Brumbaugh Cather 1ne Stut man W1ll1S W1ttmer and V1v1an Burgess a rather smart l1ttle g1rl who sktpped 1nto our grade from the second Most of us had forgotten our multrphcatron tables dur1ng summer vacatron and so we had to learn them all over But the real trouble maker that year was long d1v1s1on We thought we d never learn 1t Some of the g1rls became qu1t able trapese ar t1sts pract1c1ng mostly at recess t1me on the ch1n nrng bar Modesty modesty where wert thou? That was the year we learned Under a Spread 1ng Chestnut Tree Also qulte a number of us en tered 1nto the declamatron contest Our SUPBIVISOIS rn the flflh grade were M1ss V1o1et Werstler and Mr Albert Brumbaugh Newcomers Zelda Erb Mae Raber Margaret Balm George Sommers Andrew Coblentz Andrew Hornmg Donald Long Nelson Beachy Fannre Beachy Edna Sommers Dorthea McClure That year there were several feuds among the grrls and tt seems as rf Iva Royer and Beverly Po well got rn wrong w1th M1ss Werstler one day What do we see here? Oh B111 Cavanah and V vlan Burgess have to hold hands because they were talkrng together V1v1an seems to be slrghtly embarrassed One morn1ng Cather1ne Strrcklch came to school and sard she had a new baby brother Gee all the grrls envred her Iva Royer went to the hospttal for an appendectomy poor Iva That year Mr Brumbaugh became 111 and Roy Wtse substttuted Thmgs went ftne t1l1 he moved some l1ttle grrls seats and then 1t was too bad Mr Mcman Werstler and Mr Albert Brumbaugh taught us 1n the S1Xll'1 grade Newcomers Iumor Bennett Wm Mtller Betty Garman Glenn Ienkrns Robert Helm1ck Dav1d Fero W1lma Henne Eva Roberts and Helen Wood 'mg That year we the boys and grrls both played a lot of baseball and basketball dur1ng recess and gym penods We studred w1th mrrrors 1D our books so as to watch those behmd us and not m1ss out on any thrng unul the teacher caught on We had a lot of fun that year At the end of the year both rooms had a p1c1nc up 1n Mr Werstler s woods Everyone had a good tune rn the contests and games A couple l1ttle boys carved the1r 1n1t1als and those of the1r favonte g1rls 1n the bark of some of the trees Those were the happy days' Now we are somebodresl The seventh grade and Iun1or H1gh' We change classes and have study hall r1ght w1th the Hrgh School Our home room teachers were Mr Roger Brshop and M1ss Edna Mae Reese The newcomers Alvrn Mtller Walter Swonger Patr1c1a Evans Frank Dewerl Dorothy Mrldred W1nnett Alrce Swonger We hked to make Mr Blshop blush as he seem ed to have a weakness for blushtng Ir Bennett was the glamor boy and just about every noon he gave h1s favonte glrlfnends bubble gum and candy That year Anna Kovacs changed her name to Ann We also had qulte a few detentlon per 1ods The teachers 1n charge of the e1ghth grade were Mr Paul Alexander and M1ss Dor1s Morgan The newcomers Robert Eldeman Max Love Lester See man Betty Sptcer Ellzabeth Handshuh There was nothmg unusually hard that year ex cept that long test that took a whole half day but 1f we d1d pretty good 1n that test we d1dnt have to take the county tests at the end of the year and I guess we all got rather good grades tn 1t Thus we were automatlcally graduated from the erghth arade 1937 and were actually freshmen' Now we were rn h1gh school and th1ngs really began hap- pemng Class ofhcers Presldent Wanda Merkle V1ce Prestdent Dueber Maurer Secretary W1lma Henne Treasurer Darwtn Sm1th and Sponsor Mr Paul Alexander The f11'Sl thlng was the Freshmen 1n1t1at1on We were all scared but 1t turned out to be a n1ce t1me The Iun1ors took us out on a hrke 1n the woods and everyone had to hold hands so as not to get lost W1th one newcomer Iohn Dysle we now had 38 members We couldnt do much that year bemg Just fresh men but we d1d sponsor the hrst roller skat1ng party For our assembly program we put on School Daze whlch proved successful w thought Our Sophomore year took last years green - 11 11 1 1 - ' . , 1 - 11 ' ' . 1 1 - 1 us. , , , , 1 1 ' . . . . 1 . 1 1 1 , . . 1 ' - ' - - - - . . 1 1 1 1 I . 1 1 1 ' . - - - . . . 1 1 1 1 , , 1 1 1 1 . 1 - ' . . 11 11 , , I , 1 . label off of us Our home room was now 1n the study hall The offlcers were Presldent Iames Mullen Vrce Presrdent Donald Long Secretary Lots Espenschled Treasurer Wanda Merkle and our sponsor Mr Alexander The newcomers that year were Rosemary Betzler and Herbert Wlse We gave bake sales roller skatmg partres t but the blg event of the year was our Sophomore play The Antrcs of Andrew The cast conslsted of Iames Mullen Loxs Espenschled Donald Long Wanda Merkle Iohn Dysle Catherxne Str1ck1 h Dueber Maurer B1ll Schumacher VIVIGD Burgess Glenn Graber Walter Bolllnger Lou1s Susco and Darw1n Smlth Our Iunror year found us a llttle more a t1ve than the f1rst two years of h1gh school Mr Alexander was our sponsor and the newcomers were Mary Hmerman James Horsley Ralph Rexkowsky B tty Sturm Murvyn Brannan Ralph Hrnerman and Wxl bur Knowles Our class numbered 36 The fust soclal functron the Freshman 1n1t1at1on was our pnvllege as Iunrors to carry out and the Freshmen had qulte a tlme They carned knrttrng bags wore the1r clothes backwards war the1r shoes on the wrong feet the boys wore green harr tures of them We gave two roller skatmg part1 s two bak sales and we also sold class plns Our class ja k ets were ordered some trme 1n Novemb r after f1n ally comma to a dec1s1on about colors style of Jackets and the emblems bemg that of a dev1l The Amencan Beauty Rose became our class flow Down and Up was the play we pres nted and those m the cast were Murvyn Brannan B verly Powell Wanda Merkle Dueber Maurer Paulm Stutzman Iva Royer Edna Keller Gena Grab Mary lane Wxcks Erleen Tessmer Rosemary Be 2 ler and Iames Mullen Durmg the summer we were also busy We gave a festrval on Iuly 24 whrch turned out to be a grand success Semors' Boy are we good' On September 9 we started ba k to school for our last year w1th 27 rn our class V1rg1n1a Mead was the only newcomer For the last 4 years our class has been steadlly on the de l1ne Th clas ofhcers were Presrdent Donald Long V1 e Presl dent Darw1n Smlth Secretary Edna Keller Treas urer Glenn Graber and our sponsor Mrss N1 wander The candy commrttees for the two semesters were Wanda Merkle and Lo1s Espenschred for the frrst and lva Royer and Rosemary Betzler for the second semester Always lead never follow was the motto we chose Those representmg our class rn the Student Cotm C11 were Darwm Smlth Lols Espenschled and Due ber Maurer who was later replaced by lame Mul en November 5 we were to re e1ve our r1ngs b.1t they were delayed November 7 we took a stat test for semors wrth Ralph Re1kOWSkY commg out on top November 23 we sponsored a carnlval whrch was a dlsappomtment We gave a couple roller skatmg partles and a couple bake sales also Mar h 29 was the semor scholarsh1p test Apnl 18 was the day we gave our senxor play Prof ssor How Could You Those 1n the cast were Darwm Smlth Lots Espenschled Wanda Merkle Iohn Dysle hm Horsley V1v1an Burgess Donald Long Mary lane Wrcks Beverly Powell and Glenn Graber It was qulte a success and the people of the community also thought so to h ve the boys wear blue caps and gowns and the g1rls wear whlte caps and gowns Our dmlo mas were those of the book type havlng a sued cover and naturally rn our class colors red and gray These two th1ngs were both a change from the usual custom of the school Those people who started out rn the f1rst grad and were graduated together were Edna Keller Wanda Merkle LOIS Espenschled Iva Royer Glenn Graber B111 S humacher Paulme Stutzman Erleen Tessmer Mary Iane Wlcks Dueber Maurer Dar w1n Smrth Ann Kovacs and Beverly Powell a total of 14 Two teachers who taught when we started and are stlll teach1ng when we graduate are Mrss Cora Keller and Mr Marran Werstler The fnale of our 12 years of school was brought to a close by a grand and glorxous evenlng at the Masslllon Womans Club on May 23 as guests of the Iumors We all enjoyed a great tlme Then on May 25 Baccalaureate Exerc1ses were held at the Lutheran Church wxth Rev Roehner d l1VGIlI1g the address Last but not least was Commence ment whrch was held on May 29 Edna Keller gave the Salutatory speech and Iames Mullen gave the Valedxctory speech Thus ended our Hrgh School career : ' ' , : .
