He has taught us that no amount of sacrifice is too great for the pursuit of an ideal, that the quest for musical understanding is a never-ending process, that a thorough knowledge of our art and its relation to the rest of the world is the surest way to a happy, useful life. For his tireless efforts over the years to guide his students in musical truths, for his Warm friendship and ready help as a sincere human being, we gratefully dedicate HALLEGROQ, 1953. J DIRECTORS MESSAGE Those of us who are privileged to earn our livelihood in the field of an desire, most of all, a peaceful world in which to live and work. During these troubled times we read daily about atomic and other powers, science, and enterprises concerned with material gains. All of this only heightens our fear of destruction and annihilation. It is, therefore, all the more neces- sary that institutions of learning such as ours be kept alive and more and more active. Our School - Your School - is doing its utmost to keep the beacon of beauty and goodness burning forever. May the art of music continue to bring better balance to our civilization, now and in the future. It was never lonely in that little room below the lower deck. Always, some member of the staff was busily laboring to beat another deadline, to prepare another assign- ment: it was constantly a bee-hive of activity and music, always surrounded by the dulcet accompaniments of the practicing brassgg, 'woodwinds, tympanists, and of course, the scenery crew and their hammers and sawslf' I E Today all is a happy: memory, The disillusions and the sorrows which contributed to the preparation of our yearbook are all forgotten, and in their place, this final copy of the Allegro is the result of the harmony and ensemble of the entire staff. I am greatly indebted and grateful to all those who have contributed their efforts in making our book a sincere expression of our desire to keep alive the memories of our college days. As Bachelors of Music we shall live according to the highest ideals that our art teaches us. As fellow students we shall always be grateful to our friends andfaculty for their loyal help in making our years at Hartt College the finest years of our lives. A special note of thanks to Mr. Broadhead, who guided us during the entire duration of our efforts, and to all the contributors of the books, thank you, and best wishes from all of us. Over the main entrance the words, UMUSICIANS' IMPROVISITORY CENTRE, and in the shield below, the motto, uAn improvised . . . . . 97 Musician IS a Good Musician . . . 'cmade to order. This is the annual inspection day at the Centre, and the Musicians' State Conductor, His Krenkship, Arno Roscoe Safran will check the factory for any consonances in the Opus production of the predestined, decanted and improvised musicians and singers. The Centre is staffed by the highest-order type of G Cleff workers, each with his individual opus number, headed by the Concert-scheister, Clem Gebo, who nervously awaits his Krenkships cue. A soliloquizing hum of activity fills the atmosphere of the Centre which is filled with the highest-order type of synthetic music from the ether music boxes behind the indirect lighting tubes. c'Blunder in G flat minor by Gil Perlroth is playing softly in the background, creating a leading-tone feeling of anticipation. Down in the basement staff is the singers Decanting room, where three large test tubes, labeled Moody, Mattingly, Michalaros and Miron, are being pre-destined, and their contents improvised upon with various musical effects including open- throat tones, epiglottis attacks and flat notes. On the rack beside them, three other tubes are being individually conditioned: the Golden tube has been suspended for two weeks in the bell of a Martino tuba. The Sinagulia solution mixed with stars and roses, while Hope Haley, already decanted, rests quietly beside hypnopaedic recordings of Aida and Madam Butterfly. Upstairs, in the woodwind improvising rooms, the clarinet section of test tubes are being exposed to a 440 A by whistling Sid Cohen, the kid of the F Clef Class who is Chief Pitch of the Centre. The solutions are being stirred carefully by automatic plastic reed mixers for the exaggeration of future reed problems. The tube labeled DiMinno is being rapidly rotated and conditioned for allegro passages, the Tanguay solution heated for appasionata Sections. f 5 .A , Nat, 5 Nui Nfl bf Ffh, 'gn i H Q Hudg g 'Hu 'Qi 'mm - r at OW M l,0uQ,f 5 hdifmwkgli hfllcillidijgf 'H'-as icnwhuspf 1 5, ilinliismlds, idahthii Luau-rift 'adder bhidiwil Hauuwnm f .-J ,,uWV M Pa , .a-W 6, Above these lower levels ' th , . . . In charge of the pre-destined piano-players incubators is Gene Cipriano, who carefully holds a specially curve-shaped tube up to the light to check the contents for any stray five-four rhythm patterns that might have un-conditioned the Verilli solution, and extraordinarily explosive type of conditioned key-board wonder, which some day will play with both hands tied behind her back. Playing harpsichord in the corner of the laboratory is Elsie Terrafino, whose pre-conditioning during her decanting ex- posed her to the highest order of Classic Forms, '6Commona my House. There is a magnificent View from the windows of this staff, looking out upon beautiful Swan Lake in the Persian Gardens, just like a Midsummer Nightis Dream. This is very inspiring to the gardener, Raymond Hibbard, who is gently gathering hemi-semi demiquavers from the edge of the lake. Chief-Inspector-of-the-Landscape is Barbara Hayes, who whirls around the Centreis grounds in her musical helicopter at a lento pace, Carefully scoring all dissonances in view. Bernard Karl, who has been improvised to be a highest-order tom-tomist, quietly sits beneath the baton of George Vince, playing the Block-head Symphony for Tom-tom, another Perlroth tune. With the arrival of His Krenkship, Marvin Salzburg will be in charge of the tour of buildings, with Don McFalla conducting his one man band in the royal salute. Majorettes are Elsie Cocco and Gloria Osso,'who will perform acrobatics upon the keyboard stairs leading up to the entrances. The bit, of course, is the Musicopolis Trio, Perfetto, Finman and Hull, which will swing against the established rituals of the land and sing a tune by Ludwig von Beethoven. A.M.M.
