RETROSPECT published by the senior class of hartsville high school hartsville, south Carolina co-editors: ellen boyd and larry home business manager: linda mcrae sponsor: mrs. nancy burch The September sun is warm upon our backs as we stand outside the doors of Hartsville High School waiting for the 8:20 bell. After only a week of school and with thoughts of summer vacation still prevalent in our minds, we find it difficult to settle into the study grooves that were once familiar to us. We lose no time in becoming involved in activities. The magazine sale makes us acutely aware of the fact that we are finally seniors—with special privileges to enjoy and important decisions to ponder. The bell is ringing and we shuffle through the doors, laughing and shouting merry greetings to our friends. To us seniors, thoughts of college and graduation appear more as distant possibilities than realities. Interested teachers, however, are quick to remind us of applications for prospective colleges and the awesome College Board Examination. With a sigh of hope, we accept the challenge thrown to us, and with a backward glance, we continue up the hallway of our last year, reluctant yet eager. Table of Administration..... CLASSES SENIORS Senior . .. the word brought a smile to our faces, and a challenge to our hearts, as we stood at the threshold of a new school year. We viewed the road ahead and realized the need for courage and faith to carry on. Courage we found through constant devotion and service to Hartsville High School, but faith came from within to guide us. A record-breaking magazine sale, one of the most successful class plays ever at HHS, and the Powder Puff football game brought unity to the senior class. This, our senior year has come to an end. With every determination known, we have sought to raise the ideals and standards of Hartsville High School. After settling down to the regularity of school life, we looked to our class projects: Talent Night, Junior Class Play, Junior-Senior, and the Powder Puff football game. These projects tempered the hours of study, the NMSQT, and the CEEB. Our successful junior year gave us the experience and confidence to begin our senior year. We began learning by accepting responsibilities outside our academic duties. Extra-curricular activities demanded of us our time and talent. This year we were in charge of the concession stand at the football games. By learning to live up to these responsibilities, we gained something of immeasurable value. Mrs. Evans, class sponsor, takes the name of a sophomore volunteering for concession stand work. ATHLETICS Football ’66 Coach Seigler anxiously watches his team during a pre-season practice session. The integrity of the 1967 Red Fox football team was marred by only one loss. Entering the season as a shallow and inexpert enced team, the Foxes gained the experience and skill which made them worthy of the contention of their opponents and also led to the title of Pee Dee Champions. 1967 marked the last year of the Foxes’ bouts in the Pee Dee Conference. Having achieved the present record, future teams will play state-wide competition. The first half proved to be a defensive battle as it ended in a scoreless tie. Bishopville gained the lead early in the third quarter as they capitalized on a fumble to score. However, Hartsville quickly tied the score. The game was a battle for yardage until the end. A personal foul against Bishopville placed the ball for a second touchdown for Hartsville. At the conclusion of the game, the Dragons had bowed to the Foxes in a 19-6 victory. Manning The excitement of the homecoming game this year was enhanced by the victory over Manning. The skill of the Foxes was put to a test in the fight for yardage against the previously undefeated Monarches. Scoring in the first half, Manning took the lead. However, the Foxes were close behind in scoring. Howard Barfield, Johnny Roscoe, and Rock Horne were high scorers for the game. During halftime exercises, Charlene North-cutt was crowned Homecoming Queen. Rock grits his teeth in a determined effort to gain the needed first down. 100 Darlington Leading the Foxes to their final victory of the season were Johnny Roscoe, Howard Barfield, and Clyde Cassidy. Their scoring Gave the Foxes a 25-0 win over their arch rival, Darlington. Hartsville led in completed passes, interceptions, and first downs throughout the game. Winning this contest placed the Foxes first in the Pee Dee Conference, and put our record above Kingstree’s. Lake City The Hartsville Red Foxes gained their first victory of the season with a 13-0 win over Lake City. Scoring in the first half, the Foxes overcame all nervousness as they pressed on with a new energy. Hartsville gained the ball on a fumble in the fourth quarter, setting the situation up for Wayne Shoemake to score the final touchdown. Rock Horne captured the final point. Under this handicap, the team practiced vigorously to obtain the experience and agility needed to contend with the skill of their opponents. Top scoreboard lighters for the season were Freddie Pridgen and Nathaniel Rogers. In the excruciating battle against time, as well as the opponents, the Foxes played with the true spirit of HHS. Although the boys lost several games of the season it was concluded with a feeling of accomplishment. Girls’ Basketball Susan Byrd Cindy Ray The cause of the number of games dropped by the Foxettes this season was largely attributed to the loss of four lettermen due to graduation. However, the girls displayed the ability to handle themselves as a team although not well enough to contend with the skill of all of their opponents. Top scoreboard lighters for the season were Kay Stokes, Susan Byrd, and Cindy Rae. Under the coaching of Coach Petty, the Foxettes showed true team work and sportsmanship throughout the season. With the experience gained from playing this year, the returning team for ’67 will have achieved the skill and ability that is essential in leading their opponents to certain defeat. ISI Retrospect Charlene points out the price of an annual as Kathy makes out a receipt. While at the Delmar plant in Charlotte, Linda, Sibyl, Mr. Crimminger, Nancy, and Betty try to decide upon the cover. Handymen, Curtis and McKiever, help in picture taking. Business Manager, Linda McRae and her assistant, Cindy Floyd, are successful in their persuasive sales pitch. 152 Staff—1967 Pooling their efforts together, Susan, Debbie, Linda, Sylvia, Margaret, Wayne, and Frank work to create new ideas. Fighting deadlines, drawing graphs and layouts, searching for new ideas, hectic days of picture taking, writing captions and copy; this, plus hours of dedicated work went into producing the 1967 Retrospect. As the school year progressed, the first completed division was mailed to the publishers. However, not until the final section had been sent in, did we realize that we had met our challenge: our fears, hopes, and anticipations had materialized. A yearbook, so much more than words and pictures, is a book filled with a composite of emotions and memories of the past school year. We hope the Retrospect will be enjoyed by all. Mrs. Burch, Sponsor, helps Denise and Diane identify a picture. 153 Ellen Boyd and Larry Horne, co-editors, spend another hectic day with Mr. Norris taking pictures. Looking with a backward glance at the closing doors of Hartsville High School, we realize that we will take with us vivid memories—magazine sales, College Board Exams, term papers, the excitement of a football game, the anticipation of a holiday, and finally graduation. We will, in essence, never leave, for just as these things are a part of our minds, so are we a part of Hartsville High. Certainly, a group cannot work together for four years without leaving behind some- thing of influence. Perhaps we have made a pattern in tradition. This, the last year of formal education for some of us, has been a time of decision. Indeed, the ideal status of being a “senior” entails more than just good times and privileges. From the first to the last day of this twelfth year, a senior carries upon his shoulders the weight of his destiny. The end of this, our twelfth year, marks but the beginning of the future. With a fond good-by, we turn and hasten upon our way. Senior Statistics A ADAIR.
