Sidney Miller helps Dickie Whisenhunt and Wiley Blackmon to become familiar with the map of the United States. Because America is the leading nation of the world, we must have thorough understanding of our own country, its geography, its people, and its problems in order for its position to be maintained. Courses in government, history, and civics help to acquaint students with the achievements of the past and the needs of the future. It is also important to understand other peoples of the world. Language and history courses form a bond between our culture and that of other countries. Through the opportunities afforded us by our school, we have sought to understand ourselves and our place in society both now and in the future. 13

In American History, Kenneth Jeffords uses Newsweek Magazine as a source of information on the affairs of the World. Learning to speak Spanish by listening to records is enjoyed by Becky Gaskins, Laraye Tedder and Reggie Smith. A tangible proof of his ability to organize and express his thoughts is presented to Roger Henry by the Reverend Clarence Griffin, president of the Optimist Club. Bill Elliot, Beth Smith, and Harry Frampton express an interest in the field' of science by conducting an experiment in the chemistry laboratory.

DEDICATED to our community which Hartsville High School and our community work closely together in providing an atmosphere in which the individual may reach the maximum in achievement. As our school develops our physical and mental abilities, our community encourages us to use these aspects in accepting our responsibilities as citizens and future leaders of Hartsville. There are many areas in which Hartsville has contributed to the well-being of its citizens. As a result of an expansion of agriculture, industry, and commerce, our city is prosperous and progressive. Through our various churches spiritual development and inspiration are provided to the individual. In addition the many faceted civic organizations provide opportunities for citizens to contribute of themselves toward the betterment of the community. Thus through availing ourselves of the opportunities offered by our city, we believe that we can become more useful and worthwhile citizens. It is with pride and gratitude that w« dedicate the 1961 Retrospect to our community which nurtures our growth. Through summer employment Jimmy Cox learns the importance of correct plant selection on an experimental plot of Coker’s Pedigreed Seed Company. Because of the first hand knowledge gained on a visit to Sonoco, Rhen Hunter, Paul Howie, Ronnie Clark, and James McDaniel more clearly understand the importance of Hartsville’s industry to this town and state.
