Because of this preparation, our horizons have been broadened through problems, hard work, and achievements in the classroom, at social events, and on the athletic field. Each event has made an impression upon us. From these experiences compiled through our high school years, we now eagerly await the coming opportunities of a modern tomorrow. in our search for Knowledge to meet the Mrs. Gore tests her English class on the knowledge they have absorbed during the six weeks. Education is essential in preparing us to meet the requirements of the future. Through schools which make available to us the opportunities of public education, we realize that we need to become vitally concerned in our world around us, beginning with our own homes and expanding our concepts to include even the universe. George Hawkins and Rex Capps discuss a drawing in mechanical drawing. Pat Ramsdell inspects a book before checking it out. Harry Gregory explains a physics problem while Bobby Dempsey and Jack Hopkins listen with interest. 9 our HOME... We believe that an understanding of our home, community, and state will help us to become better citizens. Through the home economics classes, understanding within the family is expanded. A better knowledge of our state is provided by studies in civics and problems of democracy. American history gives to the individual a clearer perception of the forces which molded the background of our nation. Connie Beasley checks the pulse of Heddie Carroll while Katherine Atkinson looks on during a demonstration of home nursing. COMMUNITY... George Hoffmeyer, Jimmy Benfield, and Keys Lewis are setting up the equipment to show a film for a church organization. Making a radio in electronics has given Johnny Poison and Gene Munn practical knowledge in the field of electricity. In American History, Kenneth Jeffords uses Newsweek Magazine as a source of information on the affairs of the World. Learning to speak Spanish by listening to records is enjoyed by Becky Gaskins, Laraye Tedder and Reggie Smith. A tangible proof of his ability to organize and express his thoughts is presented to Roger Henry by the Reverend Clarence Griffin, president of the Optimist Club. Bill Elliot, Beth Smith, and Harry Frampton express an interest in the field' of science by conducting an experiment in the chemistry laboratory. Sidney Miller helps Dickie Whisenhunt and Wiley Blackmon to become familiar with the map of the United States. Because America is the leading nation of the world, we must have thorough understanding of our own country, its geography, its people, and its problems in order for its position to be maintained. Courses in government, history, and civics help to acquaint students with the achievements of the past and the needs of the future. It is also important to understand other peoples of the world. Language and history courses form a bond between our culture and that of other countries. Through the opportunities afforded us by our school, we have sought to understand ourselves and our place in society both now and in the future. 13 DEDICATED to our community which Hartsville High School and our community work closely together in providing an atmosphere in which the individual may reach the maximum in achievement. As our school develops our physical and mental abilities, our community encourages us to use these aspects in accepting our responsibilities as citizens and future leaders of Hartsville. There are many areas in which Hartsville has contributed to the well-being of its citizens. As a result of an expansion of agriculture, industry, and commerce, our city is prosperous and progressive. Through our various churches spiritual development and inspiration are provided to the individual. In addition the many faceted civic organizations provide opportunities for citizens to contribute of themselves toward the betterment of the community. Thus through availing ourselves of the opportunities offered by our city, we believe that we can become more useful and worthwhile citizens. It is with pride and gratitude that w« dedicate the 1961 Retrospect to our community which nurtures our growth. Through summer employment Jimmy Cox learns the importance of correct plant selection on an experimental plot of Coker’s Pedigreed Seed Company. Because of the first hand knowledge gained on a visit to Sonoco, Rhen Hunter, Paul Howie, Ronnie Clark, and James McDaniel more clearly understand the importance of Hartsville’s industry to this town and state. nurtures our growth... Bren Johnston and Mendel Smith enjoy the opportunity of worship in one of Hartsville’s many churches which contribute to our spiritual welfare. ti£l!l ... Our ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERS Mr. T. H. We entered our Senior year more aware than ever of the importance of academic success. Determined to study hard, we tackled physics, senior math, American history, and our second year of a foreign language, typical Senior subjects. Although we met these challenges with varying degrees of success, we feel that we have taken important steps in broadening our horizons. Enthusiastically we launched the magazine campaign, our money making project. Other projects included operating concession stands during games, entering a class float in the homecoming parade, and being senior disc jockeys over the radio one night a week. They also aid Mrs. Boggs, librarian, in keeping the library neat and attractive. Each year during Book Week, club members arrange a special bulletin board emphasizing the importance of reading. They also make an annual trip to the regional library meeting. The aim of the Librarv Club is to stimulate an interest in reading throughout the student body. Betty Alice Baynes and Tom Gregory file magazines while George Hoffmeyer, Delores Johnson, Mary Elizabeth Johnson, and Anne Morris sort them out. Pat Wheless, Ernestine Galloway, Lana Odom, and Delaine Johnson prepare an attractive bulletin board while George Hawkins and Patsy Hodge select the material to be used. OFFICE ASSISTANTS Our office assistants play a prominent part in the efficient management of the office. Just a few of their responsibilities are answering the telephone, printing the bulletin, typing, and welcoming visitors. Under the capable supervision of Mrs. Powell, school secretary, the assistants not only acquaint themselves with the way in which an office is run, but also render a valuable service to our school. Elaine Johnson and Frances Jacobs run the bulletin through the mimeograph machine. Pat Hunter, Betty Jane Stokes, and Lucia Raines find that checking the absentee cards is an important and exacting job. Performing their daily tasks, Beth Smith, Barbara Goodson, Margaret Reagan, and Stephanie Burch help make the office function efficiently. nmo jmkm MlTMWlI The purpose of the Latin Club is to encourage an interest in and appreciation of the civilization, language, literature, and art of ancient Rome.
