PHYSICALLY More energy is needed than it seems for knee-bends, one of the many exercises in the boys’ physical education class. Realizing that physical growth is important in the total educational program for each student, Hartsville High School strives to teach the care and proper development of the body. Through organized team sports and individual competition, we realize the importance not only of maturing in physical skills, but also of acquiring self-discipline. Our vital concern is to achieve a balanced alliance between the mind and the body.

The Choraleers, contributing to the spiritual life of our community, sing for many services. The students of Mrs. Gaskins’ homeroom bow their heads in prayer during the morning devotion. We realize that spiritual growth is vital to maturity. At Hartsville High School we hold daily morning devotions in each homeroom. Annually we benefit from Religious Emphasis Week when local ministers visit our school, bringing to us messages of inspiration. We are helped to learn that we must achieve spiritual as well as mental and physical growth during the adolescent years. Academic growth is worthless unless accompanied by an ever growing awareness of a faith. Education imparts knowledge to make a living; religion bestows a purpose to make life. SPIRITUALLY

David Truett, Russell Watson, Frances Outlaw Barbara Goodson, Melanie Beasley, and Betty Helms take advantage of the spare moments when they can catch up on the latest happenings. Susan Kelly gets a piece of the beautiful cake cut by Mildred Gainey as Joyce Griggs and Ethel Middleton look on. Judy Sherron, a member of the Homecoming Court, dances happily with Charles Easterling at the dance after Homecoming. One of our main objectives in life is the mastery of regulating work with play. We must learn not only to enjoy our lives in leisure moments, but also to balance them with the proper blend of social activity. At Hartsville High School, we learn to adjust to various situations and developments. We have the opportunity to mingle and get along harmoniously with all types of people. Thus we can more fully comprehend the complexity of our own beings. SOCIALLY
