INTELLECTUALLY Life is like an endless treasure chest, filled with success, love, peace, and happiness. This chest, however, demands a key to unlock its wealth. The key to life’s treasure is learning. At Hartsville High School we are able to attain the academic phase of learning in fields of mathematics, languages, social studies, and science. Here we are urged to put the key of learning to use in unlocking life’s great wealth. Geometry students, Garry King and Charles Hughes, watch closely as Mr. Southerland explains a theorem. Cecil Munn and Lucile Tyner listen intently while Mr. Tisdale demonstrates the use of equipment used in biology. Russell Watson takes advantage of his study hall time to look at his favorite magazine as Marilyn Newsome chooses a book for parallel reading. 8

Taking notes from a television lecture is a new experience for American history students. Jearldine Gainey learns to use the dictaphone while performing her duties as office assistant. Sewing a straight seam isn’t as easy as it looks agree Cecilia Lunn and Barbara Vann.

The Choraleers, contributing to the spiritual life of our community, sing for many services. The students of Mrs. Gaskins’ homeroom bow their heads in prayer during the morning devotion. We realize that spiritual growth is vital to maturity. At Hartsville High School we hold daily morning devotions in each homeroom. Annually we benefit from Religious Emphasis Week when local ministers visit our school, bringing to us messages of inspiration. We are helped to learn that we must achieve spiritual as well as mental and physical growth during the adolescent years. Academic growth is worthless unless accompanied by an ever growing awareness of a faith. Education imparts knowledge to make a living; religion bestows a purpose to make life. SPIRITUALLY
