b ekcc PROGRESS mo Published by the Seniors of HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Hartsville, South Carolina LINDA DRIGGERS MARY ELMORE Editors 3 BELVA HOWLE Business Manager cuv eJtcc (9 We welcome the future, for we are prepared. For four years we have been strengthened by knowledge, trained for leadership, and enriched by companionship. Through the cooperative efforts of our church, our school, and our home, we have learned the essence of adult life— responsibility and independence in the true sense. Abby Funderburk and other members of the electronics class work hard to build a direct current power supply which will become a permanent piece of work bench test equipment. The bell rings; the rush is on. Betty Morrell, Naomi Kelley, and Anne Coker hurry to their lockers before the next class begins. a u£ MEMORIES Spirit . . . loyalty . . . achievement... friendship . . . are all a part of the memories that linger with us long after we leave Hartsville High School. Our school will change, but it will always be the school that we know . . . enriched and strengthened by the traditions of the past. Table of Contents Administration .... In the construction of the master plan for a year at high school, we can see the influence of many builders: our superintendent, our principal, faculty, classmates, parents, and finally the individual whose life is in the formative stage. The consummation of plans that have become working realities signifies Hartsville High today. Hck, in, ccn, eAa, “How much CaCI do we need?” asks chemistry students as Mr. Swords looks on. Mrs. Ulmer discusses Mexican life with Spanish students, Meg: Andrews and Naomi Kelly. Members of the carpentry class work hard to complete their project, building- the home of a Hartsville citizen. Taking notes from a television lecture is a new experience for American history students. Jearldine Gainey learns to use the dictaphone while performing her duties as office assistant. Sewing a straight seam isn’t as easy as it looks agree Cecilia Lunn and Barbara Vann. INTELLECTUALLY Life is like an endless treasure chest, filled with success, love, peace, and happiness. This chest, however, demands a key to unlock its wealth. The key to life’s treasure is learning. At Hartsville High School we are able to attain the academic phase of learning in fields of mathematics, languages, social studies, and science. Here we are urged to put the key of learning to use in unlocking life’s great wealth. Geometry students, Garry King and Charles Hughes, watch closely as Mr. Southerland explains a theorem. Cecil Munn and Lucile Tyner listen intently while Mr. Tisdale demonstrates the use of equipment used in biology. Russell Watson takes advantage of his study hall time to look at his favorite magazine as Marilyn Newsome chooses a book for parallel reading. 8 The Choraleers, contributing to the spiritual life of our community, sing for many services. The students of Mrs. Gaskins’ homeroom bow their heads in prayer during the morning devotion. We realize that spiritual growth is vital to maturity. At Hartsville High School we hold daily morning devotions in each homeroom. Annually we benefit from Religious Emphasis Week when local ministers visit our school, bringing to us messages of inspiration. We are helped to learn that we must achieve spiritual as well as mental and physical growth during the adolescent years. Academic growth is worthless unless accompanied by an ever growing awareness of a faith. Education imparts knowledge to make a living; religion bestows a purpose to make life. SPIRITUALLY PHYSICALLY More energy is needed than it seems for knee-bends, one of the many exercises in the boys’ physical education class. Realizing that physical growth is important in the total educational program for each student, Hartsville High School strives to teach the care and proper development of the body. Through organized team sports and individual competition, we realize the importance not only of maturing in physical skills, but also of acquiring self-discipline. Our vital concern is to achieve a balanced alliance between the mind and the body. David Truett, Russell Watson, Frances Outlaw Barbara Goodson, Melanie Beasley, and Betty Helms take advantage of the spare moments when they can catch up on the latest happenings. Susan Kelly gets a piece of the beautiful cake cut by Mildred Gainey as Joyce Griggs and Ethel Middleton look on. Judy Sherron, a member of the Homecoming Court, dances happily with Charles Easterling at the dance after Homecoming. One of our main objectives in life is the mastery of regulating work with play. We must learn not only to enjoy our lives in leisure moments, but also to balance them with the proper blend of social activity. At Hartsville High School, we learn to adjust to various situations and developments. We have the opportunity to mingle and get along harmoniously with all types of people. Thus we can more fully comprehend the complexity of our own beings. SOCIALLY . . . c co ui i b Mmlc fa fruJc cmzmMJi jftjf The ideal of service to one's fellow man is an integral part of education, for it is only through giving of oneself that true satisfaction comes. Because of this emphasis at Hartsville High School, we are now prepared to serve our school and our community more effectively. Sara Bennett and Gladys Parker assist the office staff in issuing books at the beginning of school. Janet Johnson, Ruth Kelley, and Annie Sue Watkins, assisted by Mrs. Odessa Henry, have the opportunity to use the knowledge gained in the commercial classes through the trainee program at Sonoco Products Company. Anna Andrews and Beverly Webb, who are called upon to assist in a community project, receive a contribution from Mr. John Easterling. 12 Some students showing a willingness to keep classrooms neat and attractive are Nancy Hafner, Betty Morrell, Jeff Truesdale, Frances Outlaw, Frankie Odom, and Becky Sparrow. HARTSVILLE HIGH! 13 ifr .PREPARATION .PROGRESS .ACHIEVEMENT We, the Retrospect Staff, dedicate the 1960 Retrospect to the ideals of preparation, progress, and achievement. These three elements are an integral part of maturity; they are necessary to the consummate development of the individual. For this reason, they are highly emphasized at Hartsville High School. Preparation is necessary for a successful life if we are to meet the demands of our changing environment. Change does not necessarily mean progress, but progress involves a willingness to accept change if this change is beneficial. Achievement, our goal at Hartsville High School, is a result of progress, the principle by which we learn. Mrs. Porter discusses college requirements and qualifications with seniors Ellen Harden and Alice Reid. With a look of satisfaction, Judy Thompson marks on the production chart the books she has read. After meeting the necessary requirements of the National Honor Society, Keys Lewis is tapped by Belva Howie, Honor Society president. 15 ADMINISTRATIVE Pictured are the Hartsville representatives of the Board of Education: Mr. Heyward F. Intellectual Achievement CLASSES The foundation upon which the student’s life work is built is laid in the classroom. Since education is the process of disciplining the mind through study and instruction, success in achieving this can be gained only through tireless effort and hard work. In the classroom also, the student gains knowledge which will later enable him to become an asset to his community and his nation. ■ With mixed emotions, we as Seniors entered our last year at Hartsville High School. Along with dreams of new places and adventures prevailed feelings of sadness at the approaching close of this chapter in our lives. This has been a busy but rewarding year. With the opening.of school last fall, the Seniors, under the guidance of Mrs. Porter, class sponsor, launched a highly successful magazine campaign with sales reaching an all time high. Seniors also worked at concession stands after the football and basketball games and served as disc jockeys on the Record Party on Station WHSC each Monday night. Another activity was honoring the class of 1934 with a beautiful float in the Homecoming Parade. Our class play, an enjoyable comedy. If Mother Only Knew, was very successful. Now the year is drawing to a close, and, for the Seniors, the final moments are filled with last minute preparation for the closing step of our high school career—graduation. Each organization has its own functions to be carried out and therefore demands a great deal from its members. It demands time, service, willingness, and most of all, oneself. But the more that is required, the greater is the reward at its termination. The fun of activity, the pleasure of companionship, the realization of service are more than compensation. Among the new ideas and projects emphasized this year by Randy Pearce, capable leader of the Student Council, are attention to parliamentary procedure, devotions at meetings after school, and new forms for committee reports. In addition to presiding at Student Council meetings and initiating Student Council projects, Randy also presides at assemblies. In order to enrich his knowledge of the duties of a president and to give him greater insight into the work of the Student Council, Randy attended a summer Student Council workshop at Camp Soca-reda, Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Randy Pearce, Student Body President, reads suggestions for school improvement submitted by the students. Student Council Rachel Adams, Vice-President; Betty Teal, Secretary; and Jimmy Bell, Treasurer, help the Student Council to run smoothly. The Student Council is an organization through which students share in the government of the school. One of its main objectives is to advance the welfare of the school in order to enrich its value to the students and to the community. It strives to promote friendly relations between the faculty and students. Members, composed of homeroom and class presidents, are elected on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Hartsville High School is a member of the South Carolina Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Student Councils. 76 Delaine Johnson, Cheryl Beattie, and Ada Sparrow are in charge of having an attractive flower arrangement in the office each week. Ellis Parsons, Betty Galloway, and Jimmy Carter display the HHS book covers sold by the Student Council as one of their projects. Spirit is the intangible, yet ever-present force which welds youth into adulthood. Since spirit is cumulative, it becomes apparent on the gridiron, on the basketball court, on the diamond, and on the cinders. Spirit is predominant in the realm of athletics. There the athlete and the spectator are united, both reflecting the strain of excitement, anxiety in conflict, exuberance in victory, and disappointment in defeat. Each contest brings out the thrill of competition and challenge, the natural desire to excel. Each game has but one winner, but the excitement and spirit of competition never die. Qiris' basketball The 1960 girls’ basketball team opened when the Foxettes battled the Winnsboro lasses in what proved to be a loss for the Hartsville team. As the season progressed, it became apparent that this was an off year for the Hartsville High School girls. Despite this discouragement, they practiced diligently and finally achieved success by defeating second place Mullins 40-32 to enter the victory column. This upset, along with an additional triumph over Bishop-ville, gave the Foxettes a season’s total of two wins against fifteen defeats. Although Delene Ingram, leading scorer with an 18 point average and captain of the team, graduates, improvement is expected because three starters will be returning. Peggie comes through with 2 in a tight game with Lake City. Louella and an arch-rival Blue Devil fight to control a jump ball. The Hartsville High School baseball team, after completing a 10-4 1959 season, winning the last six games, have optimistic hopes for the 1960 season. Led by ace left hander Bobby Shirley, who is one of the promising stars of the Pee Dee Conference, the Foxes, coached by Mr. Ray Petty, have five starters returning and many promising substitutes from last year. The starters are Ernie White, right fielder; Johnny Davis, second baseman; Ronnie Holley, shortstop; Jimmy Bell, third baseman; and Bobby Shirley, pitcher. Coach Ray Petty in his three years at Hartsville High has had some very successful seasons and is looking forward to another one this year. Baseball Right fielder Dick Newton plays “heads-up” ball and comes in from outfield position to cover second base. Ronnie Holley takes a healthy cut and lines the ball into left field for a base hit. Jimmy Bell tags the runner Johnny Davis in a close play at the plate in a Hartsville scrimmage session. Barfield. Coach Southerland, newcomer at Hartsville High, expects great things from sophomore Harry Frampton, considered one of the up and coming tennis players of the state. He is backed by four returnee lettermen who make our team one of the strongest of the Pee Dee Conference. Boys’ Zen His With a determined expression Woody comes through with a powerful serve. Becky demonstrates her forehand stroke while slamming the ball into the far corner of the court. Qiris’ Zennis The girls’ tennis team, coached by Miss Jean Evans, shows great promise this year. The team shows good depth with the return of four lettermen from last year’s squad. Trellise Wilkes leads the team as first man with three years of experience behind her. Sara Bennett, Millie Johnston, and Becky Sparrow compose the remainder of the team. Sara comes up to return a volley as Becky prepares to back her up. In another doubles match Trellise and Millie make sure this one will be returned. Trellise Wilkes, Becky Sparrow, Sara Bennett, and Millie Johnston. Pete Coggeshall, Danny Askins, Rex Capps, and Jeff Truesdale line up at the starting line just before the gun sounds. Track, a sport in which the individual is emphasized, is rapidly gaining popularity at Harts-ville High School. With twelve returnees from last year’s Pee Dee Conference runnerup team, Coach Paul Chapman is looking forward to this season as being one of the best. The team has progressed rapidly since it was begun three years ago. Early in the spring, the cindermen begin running, jumping and throwing in preparation for the coming meets. Events include the shot put, discus throw, pole vault, high jump, broad jump, and the sprints and relays. Jimmy Benfield takes the hurdle in stride in practice session before a big meet. Second Row: Jeff Truesdale, Russell Watson, Rex Capps. To achieve better form our golf team begins practice early in the spring. The Hartsville Golf Course allows the use of its course and facilities to the team for practices and lessons. Golf meets are held twice a week in Dillon, Bennettsville. Darlington, Cheraw and Hartsville. At the end of the season a tournament is held in one of these places, where the conference championship is decided and individual honors are given. Homecoming Events Ann Duval watches proudly as Mrs. Gore pins on her corsage before the parade. October 16 was a day of excitement from beginning to end. Adding last minute touches to gaily decorated floats, students rushed around during study halls. Then the Homecoming Parade, composed of bands, cheerleaders, football sponsors, the Homecoming Queen and court, and class floats, added color to the afternoon. The theme, “Keys to Tomorrow”, was artistically carried out. Finally the big night arrived. About 2,000 fans attended the game between the Red Foxes of Hartsville and the Swamp Foxes of Marion. As introduction to this grand spectacle, the football sponsors were paraded around the football field. After the graduation class of 1934 was honored and introduced at half-time, the Queen and her court were presented. The mechanics of planning, lay-out, photography, copy writing, and proofreading are familiar to the staff. Before the annual can grow into a record of a high school year, however, it must have a financial background. The annual staff contacts the various firms and explains the value of advertising. Then the staff works with the advertiser in writing up his ad. The result is a credit to the book and to the advertiser. It is the sincere desire of the Retrospect Staff that the contributions of our advertisers not go unrecognized and that the patronage of Hartsville High School students continue to be a support to them as they are to us.
