FRESHMAN YEAR—1955-56 In the year that bombs fell on Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II, we the members of the class of 1959 were born. We were children of the atomic age. We will be adults of the space age. Upon our shoulders lies the responsibility of bringing peace to mankind. For twelve years we have been seeking knowledge, realizing that with this learning we will better understand the people of other lands and their problems; we also will know ourselves better. In our striving for knowledge we left grammar school and grammar ways behind us and entered the freshman class of Hartsville High School. The word study took on real meaning in our vocabulary. That year we flooded the town's housewives with vanilla. The flavoring sale was our first class moneymaking project, the first of many toward Junior-Senior and our senior gift fund. Jo Ann Parker, who had been eighth grade president was re-elected our president and served in that position for two more years. Suzanne Smith, Zelma Ann Bell, Ernest Woodham, and Gail Morrison, high salesmen in the magazine campaign, pose with their prizes. Jimmy Ballard, top solesmon, does not oppeor.
