Priscillo Elaine Gorris Fleming Ghoens Wallace Gibson Gloria Elizobeth Grant FRESHMAN YEAR—1955-56 In the year that bombs fell on Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II, we the members of the class of 1959 were born. We were children of the atomic age. We will be adults of the space age. Upon our shoulders lies the responsibility of bringing peace to mankind. For twelve years we have been seeking knowledge, realizing that with this learning we will better understand the people of other lands and their problems; we also will know ourselves better. In our striving for knowledge we left grammar school and grammar ways behind us and entered the freshman class of Hartsville High School. The word study took on real meaning in our vocabulary. That year we flooded the town's housewives with vanilla. The flavoring sale was our first class moneymaking project, the first of many toward Junior-Senior and our senior gift fund. Jo Ann Parker, who had been eighth grade president was re-elected our president and served in that position for two more years. Members of our class participated in school clubs and athletics and won recognition. We sponsored a carnival complete with bingo and hot dogs. It was a pleasure to eat in the newest addition to the school plant, the cafeteria. And those rolls—they were wonderful. JUNIOR YEAR—1957-58 Laughter makes the world go round. We added an extra spin on its axis for this old planet, for we were really jolly juniors. Bubbling over with enthusiasm, we broke all past records in our sock and hose sale. We presented a rollicking comedy, Onions in the Stew, and our an-nuol Talent Night provided more entertainment for the student body. After every home football game we celebrated with a dance. In the spring came the greatest dance of all and the most festive evening of the year, Junior-Senior With the dance floor transformed to fairy land, the night was truly one of magic. SENIOR YEAR—1958-59 September 1958 and we were seniors. All eyes now looked up to us. Hal Littleton was elected president of the student body. Jo Ellen Taylor served as president of our class. Editors of our school publications were Mary Esther Denny and Goil Morrison, Retrospect; Suzanne Smith and Ann Bell, Newsreel. The thrill of victory was ours as the Red Foxes marched to victory again and again. During the gala festivities of homecoming Ray Richey was crowned our queen. For the last time we worked together on projects as a group. Wholeheartedly we sold magazines, worked in the concession stand, and presented our class play. Now our life as youth is ending and we approach manhood and womanhood. We will not fail in our duties as world citizens but will ever strive to implant the principles that we have learned here in high school. COKER COMPANY £ 1865-1959 Hartsville, South Carolina Extends Congratulations and Best Wishes To Graduation Class of 1959 HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Ninety-four Years of Devoted Service to Hartsville and the Pee Dee Section of South Carolina HARTSVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT Fred E. Watson, Chief, quotes Seymour Taylor: IF EVERYONE If every one who drives a car Could lie a month in bed, With broken bones and stitched-up wounds, Or fractures of the head. And there endure the agonies That many people do. They’d never need preach safety Any more to me or you. If every one could meet The wife and children left behind And step into the darkened home Where once the sunlight shined, And look upon the “Vacant Chair” Where Daddy used to sit, I am sure each reckless driver Would be forced to think a bit. If every one could stand beside The bed of some close friend And hear the doctor say “No Hope’’ Before the fatal end, And see him there unconscious Never knowing what took place, The laws and rules of traffic I am sure we’d soon embrace. If every one who takes the wheel Would say a little prayer, And keep in mind those in the car Depending on his care, And make a vow and pledge himself To never take a chance The Great Crusade for Safety Would suddenly advance. 1200 Carolina Avenue Hartsville, S.
