H ARTS VILLE... So to OUR HEARTS” NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT Published by the Seniors of HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HARTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA 3 Flora McNair Hope Gettys Editors Beth Kelley Billy Lipscomb Business Managers O ALMA MATER, MOTHER DEAR... Od September to May, five days a week, we are challenged by . . . tedious lab experiments, themes, term papers, book reports, difficult math tests, and history research. All of these bespeak the high intellectual standards of our school and offer a valuable opportunity for learning. Throughout the year we look forward to the social highlights which brighten our school life . . . spirited pep rallies, banquets, plays, dances after football games, lunch time chats, constructive club activities, sports events, and most of all, Junior-Senior. Religious Emphasis Week, morning devotions, Christian Youth, teacher's guidance, together with fair play and honest work ... all help to enrich our lives and are an important part of the school program at Hartsville High. s nhKt, canmour Knew our tfeyorite y ire: First row, v] Sara Jo I? rant- ay Richey, Mary to right: Christa “Hark, the Hera talented non eftor j tliey Christmas music. Football, baseball, basketball, tennis, and track round out our athletic program, giving all the students ample opportunity to further their physical development, and helping to instill in their characters the quality of good sportsmanship. How our expectations mount as that happy graduation day approaches. And yet, when the time comes, we are sad to leave our friends and school. Our thoughts are full of appreciation for the instruction, leadership, and fellowship of our high school years. May we ever be mindful of our motto: “The torch, be ours to hold it high” for Hartsville High . . . “So Dear to our hearts.” 14 ♦ HARTSVILLE to GUIDANCE .HOME From our homes we receive the parental guidance which plays such an important part in our years before, during, and after high school. This influence is the greatest single factor in molding our lives and characters. .SCHOOL We also wish to show appreciation for the leadership offered us at school. Through the careful planning and work of our principal and teachers we have aimed toward the priceless goals of knowledge and education. .CHURCH Through the influence and teaching of our religious leaders we have learned of God, of love, of friendship. This has helped us to see His plan for us and to make our lives richer and more meaningful. Advising and working with interest in each student are our class counselors. Taking this first step toward the four years which were to follow, we became a part of high school life. This change which we had undertaken was different, but together as a class we met this challenge and strove to do our best. Our sophomore year was filled with new experiences. Jeanette Hodge was elected our class president. Ringling Brothers’ Circus may be the most enjoyable event in the world, but the tenth grade carnival which we sponsored created a night of fun and excitement. With the sawdust from the carnival still on our feet, we ended our sophomore year. Two years wiser, our junior class began another year. Mildred Williamson took top office as president. Heading the agenda were our money-making projects for the Junior-Senior. Throughout the year we sponsored after-game dances. We produced an All-American football player as Hope Gettys captured the leading role in Time Out For Ginger. The spotlight of Broadway fell on many of our students as we presented our annual Talent Night. Keeping the spirit of the old South alive, we chose “A Colonial Plantation” as the theme of Junior-Senior. That night we were confident that the South had truly risen again. All too soon three years have passed, and we, the one hundred and forty-six seniors, are now’ on the threshold of graduation. With Patty Furr as our president, we conducted a very successful magazine campaign. Football season ended with many disappointments for the Red Foxes, but climaxing the season was the crowning of our homecoming queen, Flora McNair. As a reward for their participation in football, Pinkey Dennis and Maurice Parrott received the most valuable player award and the blocking trophy, respectively. Highlighting the year was the banquet and dance given by the juniors in honor of the senior class. Busily at work throughout the year were our publication editors recording the events around the school. Filling these positions were Hope Gettys and Flora McNair, Retrospect and Nancy Johnson, Newsreel. The day is soon when, with a feeling of regret mingled with expectation, we will turn toward our Alma Mater for the last time. The door of our future is opening—the choice of careers and hopes for tomorrow are ours. Thus ends the history of the Senior Class of 1958. THE RETROSPECT Several delegates went to Lander College to the State Yearbook Conference, an enlightening and profitable experience. All along we worked on lay-outs and had pictures taken. How we admire the patience of Mr. Carnes and Mr. Ashcraft! But most of all, we praise our sponsor, Mrs. Griffin. STAFF This was a new experience for us, but by Mrs. Griffin’s capable guidance we worked hard and met the deadline. After five months of writing, organizing, identifying pictures, and extra hours, we completed the yearbook. It is new in several ways such as the new black cover, drapes for senior girls, and emphasis on Senior High. However, it has been our ambition to make this an outstanding annual and one that clearly portrays Hartsville High School from cover to cover. It is the wish of the Retrospect staff that the 1958 annual will hold the memories of this year, “So Dear to our Hearts.” Co-Business Manager Billy Lipscomb Co-Editor Flora McNair What would we do without our sponsor, Mrs. Griffin? OFFICE ASSISTANTS Busy but efficient are Gail and Margie. “Good morning, Hartsville High School.” This is the greeting heard by the many people who call our school each day. Answering the telephone is only one of the many duties cheerfully performed by our office assistants. They receive visitors, run errands, type, operate the mimeograph machine, and assist in many other ways. Mrs. McDowell, the secretary, sees that all is running smoothly and efficiently. The office staff plays a big part in the life of our school. Besides gaining valuable experience, they are performing a great service which we could not do without. FOOT “Shout, students, shout! Hallelujah!” shout the Pep Squad, a newly organized club at Hartsville High. In its entirety it is comprised of some thirty-five sportsminded students who back their team through thick and thin. This group conducts a pep rally before every football game and sits in a body on Friday nights. The 1957 season of the Red Foxes was not a very impressive one, although it proved to be the most successful season in the past three years. The boys fought valiantly throughout the year as the record books revealed three wins against nine losses. In three other games, the opponents won by only a very small margin, but the team spirit could not be dimmed. The Hartsville eleven played with sinewy determination in every game and kept the crowd in suspense on many occasions. Probably Hartsville’s best display of talent was witnessed in the Bishop-England game. During the first quarter the Foxes scored a total of 19 points and then held the favored Bishops to a game total of 13 points. The local boys came through again as they downed Timmonsville 7 to 6 and routed Cheraw 18 to 7. Bobby Coker up-ends a swift Marion back in the all-important Homecoming battle. 94 ? HARTSVILLE VERSUS MARION October 18 marked the date of Hartsville High’s homecoming game with the Swamp Foxes of Marion. Excitement mounted as the day progressed; football players discussed the long-awaited attraction; last minute preparations were being made for the annual homecoming parade; and then the parade itself, proclaimed the gridiron clash. An appropriate introduction to this grand spectacle was the parading of the football sponsors down the field before the kickoff. The crowning of our homecoming queen at the half-time added more glamour to this very festive occasion. The whistle sounded and Barfield’s toe sent the ball soaring through the air and into the outstretched arms of our waiting opponent. Although the local eleven could not cross the Marion goal line, they launched several threatening drives. The Foxes’ forward wall rendered impenetrable until late in the final quarter when a Marion foe picked up a punt that the Hartsville boys thought was dead and raced across the goal line for the lone TD, thus climaxing a very exciting homecoming at Hartsville High. This year Coach Tom Hendrix and Hartsville High produced one of the best basketball teams HHS has boasted in several years. The sophomore-studded group consistently battled for their Alma Mater and on many occasions left devastation in their wake. Guided by Jan Caddell, the captain and only starting senior, the Red Foxes impressed and thrilled scores of fans throughout the Pee Dee Conference, as they copped top honors in tournament competition. Adding success to this year’s season, the five starting players ranked high in the Pee Dee Conference individual standings. Jimmy Griffin made the All-Conference first team, flanked by Manning Privette and Woody Morgan who rated in the honorable mention column. Captain Caddell paced the Conference netters and free throws as Ronnie Holley and Privette earned berths on the All-Tournament squad. The fast rising Red Foxes rounded out the season by winning the Pee Dee Conference championship. Darlington, Marion, and Lake City, respectively, fell victim to the powerful Foxes, as overflow crowds jammed the Lake City gymnasium during the three nights. This young team should reach maturity in 1958, and with a little luck and faithful support they should again be the pacesetters of the Pee Dee Conference. 96 Hartsville____40 Bishopville ________32 Hartsville____17 Bishopville ________35 Hartsville____46 Dillon _____________28 Hartsville____29 Mullins ____________30 Hartsville____59 Bennettsville______56 Hartsville____34 Marion _____________45 Hartsville____40 Darlington _________50 Hartsville____27 Lake City__________37 Hartsville____47 Cheraw _____________46 Hartsville____52 Dillon______________33 Hartsville____65 Mullins ____________73 Hartsville____37 Bennettsville______41 Hartsville____55 Marion______________42 Hartsville____47 Darlington _________50 David Howell, manager, and Coach Tom Hendrix. Girls' basketball this year followed the trend toward advanced athletics at Hartsville High. While their win-loss record was not overwhelmingly impressive, their spirit and determination captured the support of Foxette followers throughout the season. Paced by conference stalwart, Zeta Ingram, the local lassies stole the applause on many occasions and helped draw capacity crowds in the HHS gym. Not to be outranked by the boys, the lassies, too, ranked high in individual achievement. Zeta Ingram, with a 30.7 scoring average per game, was elected captain of the girls All-Conference team, and Martha Jo McCaw and Linda Eddins earned second team positions. Zeta and Martha Jo rallied again in tournament play to walk off with first team honors, and to help boost the girls to the conference semi-finals against undefeated Marion. Again this pair came through, capturing state-wide recognition. According to Reverend E. P. Hell’s All Star State-wide AA Basketball Team, Martha Jo was rated on the 3rd team and Zeta made the All-Junior team. The Foxettes should reach their peak next year. All the veterans on the offensive triplet will return; whereas a green defense will have to be carefully seeded and seasoned. Inspired by the outstanding coaching of Jean Evans, girls’ basketball has contributed invaluably to the athletic program at Hartsville High. 98 Hartsville__ 58 Bishopville____44 Hartsville__ 39 Dillon __________47 Hartsville___19 Mullins________42 Hartsville___37 Bennettsville _ 51 Hartsville. _ 38 Marion __________56 Hartsville. _ 51 Darlington_____45 Hartsville— 34 Lake City______27 Hartsville. _ 36 Cheraw_________32 Hartsville. _ 50 Dillon __________40 Hartsville. _ 62 Mullins________34 Hartsville. _ 43 Bennettsville _ 49 Hartsville-_ 33 Marion __________58 Hartsville. _ 41 Darlington_____47 Left to right: Jeanette Hodge, Manager; Miss Jean Evans, Coach; Kaye Pennington, Mgr. The Hartsville boys proved victorious, at least once over all their opponents except Bennettsville, who ran off with the Pee Dee Conference honors. Coach Petty’s team clinched the second place berth after defeating the Dillon Wildcats in the final game of the season. Strenuous daily workouts, burning lungs, and aching muscles all add up to the state wide recognition of the Red Fox cindermen.
