Mr. Walters, our teacher and . I . l Rare moments of leisure are provided by Debbie friend, in recognition of your out- standing character . . . your will- ingness to work . . . your quiet and friendly personality . . . and your interest in our activities, we, the Senior Class, proudly dedicate our I957 RETROSPECT. 'WKL Working with the T. and I. Club is one of Mr. Walters' many duties, RECCDGNITION OF TIME, SERVICE, SELF The spirit of a high school may well be exemplified by its senior class. Many of you have worked with enthusiasm and cour- age for and in the interest of your school. For this spirit, I am most grateful and commend you for all you have done. The faculty joins me in wishing for you a pleasant and full life. We shall follow your careers with a great deal of personal interest. We hope that you often will find occa- sions to visit your school after graduation. DOYLE W. BOGGS Principal, Senior High School Student Body of l957 I would like to congratulate you for the leadership, coeoperativeness, and friendli- ness shown this year. May your school years at Hartsville en- able you to succeed in your undertakings in preserving our democratic way of life. J, H. GRAYSON Principal, Junior High School ADMINISTRATIVE Student Body of l957, Minds of young people are like fertile plots of ground, The crops that mature there depend upon the seeds of thoughts sown and the tending of the soil. Beautiful flowers and ugly weeds come to a state of com- plete development in the same soil. Moreover, do not live in a mental weed patch. Plant seeds of innocence, of honesty, of truthfulness, of sincer- ity of deeds, of purity of thought. Till the soil well and crowd out the weeds of hatred, of jealousy, of discontent, of covetousness, of prejudice. Do not let the soil of your minds remain idle. The more it is worked the richer it becomes, the greater is its capacity to produce. This I covet for each of you: a fully developed mind yielding a great and rich harvest for America. T. H. At this time, students from Antioch and Lydia were coming to Hartsville, and we made many new friends. The con- struction of our new building was begun, and we looked forward to the day we would move. The Sophomores came back to school in September, l954, anxious to begin another school year Carolyn Lunn was elected president. Under the supervision of Mrs, Dorothy Hanna, we sponsored a Sadie Hawkins dance. Although Darlington was favored to win the annual homecoming game, the great spirit and team play of the Red Foxes merited a l-4-I2 win over our 25 C.. 5M..., f NQY' Qi' 16...-f Cqddell William Alfred Cannon l M, -My s w Wil' Z' i 4. vi-mf JCE 5hs-.- ' William M. We were so proud of them. The Junior Class came to school in September, l955, looking forward to a great year. With Mrs. Hanna again as our sponsor and Carolyn Lunn as president, we began raising money for Junior-Senior. We sold hose, held dances after the ball games and presented a play, Dear Ruth, under the direction of Miss Laura Mclnnes. We presented a talent show, and finally we began drawing the scenes for Junior- Senior. April 20 arrived. The boys and girls made a very handsome group with the theme, Oriental Gardens, in the background. 26 ig Wu- 'TNS la Betty Jo Goodman April Deanne Goodsan Jeralene Goodson Ann Graham SEN Nancy Faye Grantham Wesley Allen Haynes 5. However, this proved to be the only time the Red Foxes broke into the win column. Mullins, led by a nimble-fingered quarterback, bested Hartsville 32-O in what proved to be the worst de- feat of the season. Highly favored Lexington came out on the long end of a 19-6 score in the season's third game. Journeying to Charleston, the Red Foxes tasted defeat once again to the tune of 7-14 at the hands of Bishop-England. Facing Bennetts- ville, the Red Foxes lost their fourth game in a row O-13. Having victory turned to defeat in the final seconds of the game, the Hartsville team learned the vital importance of extra points in losing to Johnny Pierce Pinckney Dennis Quarterback Center Lancaster 12-13. Fending off the determined drives of the Camden Bulldogs with an unyielding forward wall, Hartsville held Camden to a scoreless tie. After two open dates the Red Foxes once again saw the game slip through their fingers because of missediextra points, losing to Cheraw 12-14. Bishopville's homecoming fans saw their team tri- umph over the Red Foxes 28-12. ln the final game of the season against rival Darlington, the Red Foxes blanked the Blue Devils 13-O in the first half, Darlington ruled the second half, holding Hartsville scoreless while rolling up 28 points. Their 6-2 record consisted of two victories over Darlington, Columbia, and Cam- den, and two losses to a very strong Florence aggre- gation, Also, in the State Tournament in Columbia, each of the boys who participated gave a good ac- count of himself on the courts. Team members were Jack McDonald, First man, Don Coker, Billy Miller, Billy Blackwell, and Sandy Morrison. Graduation losses were heavy, however, as Morrison is the only returning letterman.
