THE YEAR OF OUR LIVES” published by the SENIOR CLASS of HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HARTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA Beth McNair...............Editor-in-Chief Cecilia Sims.............Associate Editor Mary Jordan Newton..Business Manager 2 WORDS W6 A Portrayed within these pages are many of the experiences of life at Hartsville High School. It is the Retrospect Staff's hope that this book will help to keepalive many cherished memories and bring much pleasure in the years to come. By working together in home rooms and with the student council, we have gained experience in democracy; by cooperating with the faculty, we have broadened our scope of knowledge; by working as a team, we have gained glory in all sports; and through the joy of school spirit, we have raised Hartsville High School to a position high in the eyes of the world and dear to the hearts of her graduates. Verbally and pictorially, the 1956 Retrospect Staff has attempted to show that this has been The Best Year of Our Lives. Typical afternoon enjoyment! Optimism was high. At our class meeting everyone decided to start making money. We sold flavoring and bought a coffee urn. Joseph Jacobs was elected president of our class. Homecoming was almost here. Everyone was busy electing the king and queen and planning and fixing the floats. We defeated our age-old rivals, Darlington, 7 to 0. We were so proud of our team! During the second semester, students-to-be visited our school. The students from Lydia and Antioch came to Hartsville High to see what their new school would be like. J. W. Gainey was elected president. We began to sell coffee at the ball games and made enough money to buy a water cooler. The students from Antioch and Lydia were now coming to Harts-ville and were making new friends. The new building was started. We were so anxious to move into our new quarters. Although it was not completed, we went into the new building. With Miss Martha Hicklin and Miss Betty June Kirkland as sponsors, and Delmas Allen, president, we began to work to make money for Junior-Senior. We sold coffee and candy at the football games, held dances after the football and basketball games, and presented a play, The Curious Savage, under the direction of Miss Laura Mclnnes, dramatics teacher. After months of work, worry, and making decisions, we began drawing the scenes. The big night, April 29, arrived. The girls, in their beautiful dresses, and the boys, looking very distinguished in their dinner jackets, made a very handsome group at the dance with scenes of April in Paris in the background. Many changes have been made. A new shop and cafeteria are under construction. The Red Fox Club gave us a new bus, the Red Fox Special. Dorothy Tedder and Bruce Smith were elected Homecoming Queen and King Bishop-ville defeated us by a sad score of 39 to 7. With the help of Mrs. Jessie C. Porter, Dorothy Tedder led the class in a very successful magazine campaign. Emma Jean Cox received a watch for being the high salesman. Although we realize with much sadness that our high school career must end, we are anxious to begin our college career. Thus ends the history of the Senior Class of 1956. Whot happened, Diana? The game ended with the Foxes on the Bennettsville five yord line and threatening to score the winning touchdown. The Lancaster team, with one of the biggest lines in the state, defeated the local boys 39-7 in a one-sided bottle. In the Camden gome, the Red Foxes put on the pressure in the third quorter to moke it a tie game, 12-12. On successive Fridoy nights, Hortsville met defeat at Sumter 38-6, and Saluda, 25-6. Agoinst Cheraw, the Foxes rong up their only victory of the season by a 7-0 score. In the Homecoming game, Hortsville was trounced 39-7 by a much improved Bish-opville eleven. The 1955 version of the Red Foxes wos one that most Red Fox supporters would rather forget. Before the season begon, optimism wos running high, os many thought Hortsville would have one of its most successful campaigns in recent years. However, a look at the record will reveal that it could have been improved. Ploying many of the stronger teams in the stote, the team won only one of twelve contests, losing nine and tying two. In the seoson opener, Timmonsville edged out the Foxes, 13-12. After gaining a 13-13 tie with Mullins, the Hortsville lads were beoten by a strong Lexington team 46-0. Agoinst Bishop England they led at half time but were finolly beoten 50 .LTla viA ■ '1 j ! I J s ■ FOXES Ploying their old troditionol rivols, the Darlington Blue Devils, the Red Foxes weren't oble to hold their own and were beaten 27-0 This marked the first time that any boy on the Hartsville squad hod ever tasted defeat at the hands of a Darlington team. So the year ended. However, there was one bright spot in the Hartsville picture, that being the fine all-round play displayed by J. W. Gainey ot his guard position. Besides receiving the Red Fox Blocking Trophy, J. W. was voted Most Valuable by his teammates and was selected to represent Hartsville in the annual Pee Dee Tobacco Bowl gome. I would like to soy o good job well done to each of you. As your Sheriff, I am deeply concerned about the increasing toll of life ond limb token by accidents on Dorlington County highways. It is exceedingly distressing for me to note that many of the victims are young people—boys ond girls in their Teens. It is a sad commentary upon our intelligence as human beings that we hove permitted a machine so useful as the automobile to become an instrument of destruction and death. This has happened because of the foilurc to recognize that the some rules of tcmperonce and common sense which govern actions afoot should apply behind the wheel of an automobile. Laws are no better thon the ottitude of the people they govern. Speed limits are effective only os they ore observed. Safety regulations accomplish no more than the degree to which they are obeyed. It is impossible to apply a law to a person already dead. As your Sheriff, neighbor, ond friend, I beg of you to help us and all Law Enforcement officers to cut down the destruction of life and property on our public roods. Also remember you are to hold the reins of tomorrow. Let God help you to prepore for this great task ahead ond guide you in all your undertakings. Sincerely yours, Johnny A.
