Bishopville 6 ..Darlington 12 MANAGERS: Billy Blackwell, Heyward Hawkins, Carlisle Driggers, Steve Morrison 1955 football squad . . . There were mixed emotions at the end of the 1954 football season. Some referred to it as a mediocre one; others described it as a very successful year. These reactions were present during the entire fall. After defeating Timmonsville 20-0 and upsetting Mullins by a score of 13-12, the fans were speculating an excellent season. When one of the best teams in the state, Lexington, barely gained a 14-7 victory, the optimistic still looked ahead. Shellacking Kershaw 26-14, the Red Foxes journeyed to Lancaster and nearly had another win instead of the actual 13-13 tie. After Camden walked off with a 20-7 triumph and Sumter carried home a 19-6 victory, things were mighty discouraging even to the most loyal rooters. Again the FIRST ROW, left to Right: Bruce Smith, Roland Mathis, Darius Johnson, Ervin Alexander, John Tyner, Jerry Zeigler, Alvin Newsome, Tommy Livingston, Edward Gainey. SECOND ROW: Coker Garrison, David Hoffman, Fred Foxes traveled up-state and this time Saluda capitalized on breaks to win 12-6. Since Cheraw was playing in the Lower-State Tournament, they were forced to cancel their game with Hartsville. The week's rest proved to be just what the HHS eleven needed, as they walloped Bishopville 33-6. Despite this impressive score, many were predicting that Darlington would triumph in the annual Homecoming batlle by as much as three touchdowns. But the great spirit and team play of the Hartsville High School boys merited them a 14-12 win over their arch rivals. This last game, more than any other, turned a 5-4-1 record into a very successful season. Najim, Frank Hodge, Billy Driggers, Tommy Morrison, Joe Jacobs, lenell Gilbert, Beasley Atkinson, Dukes Byrd.
