Having reached the top of one mountain along the trail of life, we, the editors, members of the Senior Class, leave this book as a collection of the memories that meant most to us at Hartsville High. During your years of faithful service as coach of our football team, you have had many friends among the student body. We, the Senior Class of 1954, salute you, Coach Harrison. Page Six PRINCIPAL MR. CRAWFORD B.A., University of South Carolina OUR SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE I congratulate you, the Senior Class members, on your achievements. You have proven that you possess the necessary qualities to make a success of your life. May the guidance that your Alma Mater has afforded challenge each of you: to pattern your role in life so that it conforms to the principles of Christian world citizenship, to acquire the capacity for cultivating true friendships: having good friends and being a good friend, to choose the occupation for which you are best suited, be proud of it, work hard at it, make work fun and take a proportionate amount of time out for wholesome recreation, to be yourself, using to the best advantage your native creative ability and contributing something that has come purely from the manipulation of your own unique facilities, to remember that life is not made up of all successes and that mistakes carry lessons for those who are willing to learn. Every student has a part in the affairs of the whole school through this organization. As set forth in its constitution, the purposes of this organization are to direct the general activities of the school, to advance the welfare of the school in every way so as to enrich its values as an influence in the life of its students, to secure the loyalty of all students, and to promote a spirit of friendliness and co-operation between the student body and the faculty. The legislative body, the Student Council, and the committees appointed by the council chiefly carry out the activities of the Student General Association. The association itself is also active through its meetings. Reports made by the chairmen of student committees, celebrations in honor of special occasions, or lectures by local or visiting speakers make up the various kinds of programs for the student body. Page Sixty The Student Council is a group of leaders chosen by the students themselves. These leaders perform many services for the school and act as a connecting link between students and faculty and between students and administration. Some of the outstanding services performed by this group are to: (1) Maintain an Information Desk in the Main Hall. (2) Raise and lower the school flag each day. (3) Take care of the lost and found articles. (4) Distribute the daily school bulletin. (5) Arrange the details of the Homecoming parade and game. (6) Conduct charity drives. This Council seeks also to improve student morale and school spirit. Through its leadership it aims always toward higher standards in conduct and manners for the high school. 7he £tu4eht Council SUE DELLE WILKES President CHARLES GOODSON JERRY FORTE OPAL WILKES Vice President Secretary Treasurer MRS. The history of the chapter has been a long and honorable one. Four hundred seventeen students have been inducted into its membership. Two members of the chapter have been elected to the State presidency of the South Carolina Federation of National Honor Society Chapters: Thomas Regers in 1937 and Richard Ulmer in 1952. On two occasions the Hartsville Chapter has been the hostess chapter of the annual meeting of the South Carolina Federation of National Honor Society Chapters. The most important projects of the National Honor Society are the operation of the Green Counter (in collaboration with the National Junior Honor Society); the publication of Hartsville Hi-ways, the handbook of information about the Hartsville High School; the administration of a loan fund to members who may need help in financing college expenses. Seventy-Eight When the 1953 version of the Red Foxes come out on the field for the first gome, supporters smiled to themselves and thought, This is our year, the team we've been waiting for. Some were disappointed, but all in a!l the Foxes gave fine performances throughout the season. The 1953 Red Fox team will long be remembered by students and faithful supporters, although the won and lost column does not show an outstanding season. In a thrilling opener the Foxes won over Timmonsville by a score of 40 to 13. The team then went to Mullins for the second game where the boys put up a determined fight, but lost. The Wildcats of Lexington collected a win in the third game of the season by defeating the Foxes 13 to 6. Having only one win with two defeats, 'Hartsville came back to win over the Kershaw and Epworth teams. After the Epworth game, the Foxes went into a losing streak that upset the season. They lost to Lancaster, Camden, Sumter, Florence, and the never-forgotten Homecoming game with Bishopville. They came out of it, however, when they had a win over their arch rivals, beating Darlington 12 to 7. This is the last year for seven Seniors who completed their high school careers with this year's record of four wins and seven defeats. The students salute the 1953 Red Fox team and their coaches Skimp Harrison and Tom Hendrix. Hampered by inexperience the 1953 Hartsville racketmen did not break into the winning column. However, prospects are bright for next year, as most of the boys will return. The valuable experience gained last year should enable Coach Brewton to field a winning team next year. For the 1953 season there were eight scheduled games. The team gave a fine performance in every game. More interest was shown this past season in the netters than any previous season. BELOW, left to right: Paula Williams, Jack McDonald. Under the basket this year, the Foxes got off to a good start. With the leadership of Coach Tom Hendrix, the team proved to be very efficient in the ball-handling department. The Foxes have played six of their twenty game schedule. In the games played, the District Champions showed a good chance of winning this honor again. The first string boys proved their ability on the hardwood by outstanding play. Valuable experience should be gained this year and the possibilities for next year should be great. The crack of the bats and thud of baseballs indicate the baseball season is here. The Foxes played a hard twelve game schedule against such familiar opponents as Florence, Darlington, Camden, Bishopville, and Sumter. Although handicapped by the lack of lettermen and experience, the diamond crew came through with that ole Hartsville spirit to win their full share of the games.
