Page Four THE EDITORS SAY Year after year the pages of The Retrospect unravel the story of another year in the history of Hartsville High School. It has been the purpose of the 1950 edition to picture faces and important school events, and to name those who have been a part of the events that have taken place. His good sportsmanship and outstanding initiative have given him a name we'll always remember. ★ ★ LESLIE RHODES Leslie is an active member of the class. He writes well and is distinguished for his wit. SHIRLEY ANN HOWLE Trixie is a grand dancer. She is a vivacious and animated person. Her appearance is always tidy. ★ ★ DEWEY LEVAN DEAN Dewey is everyone's friend. He is small and very blond. He's made a good record in school and plans to join the Air Force later. Page Fourteen Seniors WILLIAM FLETCHER ALLEN Fletcher is good at composing poetry and will major in journalism. He seems to be attracted to long brown curls and freckles. Fletcher is friendly. ★ ★ THOMAS W. ATKINSON T. W. is quiet but very friendly. He likes agriculture. He is thoughtful and generous and knows no enemies. ★ ★ LILLY MARGARET BRADDOCK Lilly is always gay. You will never see her in a gloomy mood. She is very well-liked. ★ ★ EUNICE BRAND Her nickname, Shorty needs no explanation. She loves football and, in fact, all sports. ★ ★ VIRGINIA RUTH BROWN Gin has a reputation for being a typical woman driver. She is lucky enough to have lovely, naturally curly hair the color of ginger. ★ ★ BETTY LOU BRUNSON Betty Lou reads a great deal. She has an amusing personality. Her good humor and cheerful laughter radiate good will. Page Fifteen Seniors MARGARET STUART BURCH Little Burch is a fine hostess. She loves dressy shoes and gloves. Her amiable smile is her greatest charm. ★ ★ SHIRLEY CALDWELL She is a responsible girl and a good student. Shirley is, also, an ardent square dancer. She will make a place for herself in whatever career she chooses. ★ ★ JASPER LEE BYRD Jack is well liked by his classmates. In football, he excels. He is noted for his long arms. ★ ★ MARY BYRD Mary is, believe it or not. Jack's twin. She is not loud or boisterous, but she likes a good time. ★ ★ BETTY CAMP Her friends call her B . She is a platinum blonde with a natural, fresh look. She saves all of her souvenirs. ★ ★ JAMES WALTER CANNON Jimmy is well dressed, dependable and capable. He likes golf and dancing. His good nature and individuality has gained him many friends. Page Sixteen N I! II i II IS PEGGY CROWLEY Peggy, a pretty little blonde, loves walking in the rain. She has good manners and a friendly charm. ★ ★ BETTY FAYE DEMPSEY Bett is one of our typists. She can't make up her mind between teaching school and taking dictation. Good luck in whichever you choose, Bett. ★ ★ JAMES ERVIN DIXON He's a wonder. He's a dream. He's the captain of our football team. E. J. has a dark complexion and is very quiet. He is a grand sport and loved by all. ★ ★ DORIS JEAN ELMORE Doris is full of life. With her excess of energy it's not surprising that she is our best dancer. She has many friends. ★ ★ JAMES RONALD EVERINGTON Ronnie is one of the best of fellows. You can usually find him at the Country Club. He has a sweet disposition and gets along well with others. We all love Fat. ★ ★ BERNICE FLOWERS Bunny is clever and small, with green eyes that light up her face. She is a superior typist, for whom we have the highest regard. She is very sociable. ★ ★ BETTY RAE GIBSON Her good marks have not interfered with the social side of school life. Her sweet manners and good looks make her one of the school's most popular girls. ★ ★ ADDIE LOUISE HALL Louise, the friendliest in our class, is quite talkative. She has a well-rounded personality and a generous nature. ★ ★ VIRGINIA HARRIS Jenny's A's will never be forgotten. She sees the best in everyone and is, in turn, loved by all. ★ ★ MARION DARGAN HAWKINS Marion is fun to be around because of his ready wit. He is sometimes known as a corn bread loving country boy. We call him Fire Ball. ★ ★ ADOLPH HEARON Adolph is a very capable boy. He makes good grades and is rather bashful. He loves basketball. Page Eighteen II 1 u r s BETTY OLIVIA HICKSON Modesty and reserve are her typical traits. She collects poetry. Betty enjoys a party. ★ ★ JAMES CARLISLE HOLLER, JR. Jimmy is a popular boy in school, and has done good work in everything. He plays football and excels in public speaking. He drives a 30 Chevrolet. ★ ★ WILLARD JACOBS Willard is called Slim by his friends. He loves swimming and playing golf. ★ ★ BETTY JEAN JOHNSON Betty is a mischievous girl with a love for fun. She spends a good deal of her time on horseback. ★ ★ RICHARD JORDAN Richard is in a class by himself. Who else could have managed to get in and out of so many scrapes? Good luck, Richard. ★ SARAH ADELE KELLY Sarah is known for her cheery greeting and happy remarks. She is one of those rare people who have no enemies. Sid has many friends. ★ ★ ROBERT LINDSAY KING Lindsay is another great one for fishing and football. You'd never guess that he is Leslie's twin brother. ★ ★ MERTIS KIRKLEY Mertis is better known to us as Mutt . He loves to talk, eat T-Bones and see the latest movies. ★ ★ IMOGENE LANGSTON Does anyone remember what color her hair was originally? She is neat and attractive. ★ ★ ROBERT SAMUEL LAWHON Mr. Hon likes hunting and fishing. His most outstanding characteristic is his friendly attitude. ★ ★ BOBBY JAMES LUCAS Bobby is sometimes called The Nose . Wherever he is, you'll always find him entertaining the crowd. An habitual optimist, Bobby has a good time everywhere. He is one of our best football players. Page Twenty fi i! ii i ii r s WILLIAM MALPHUS Dub is tall and fair. He is scientific, one of Mr. Guy's favorite pupils. Everybody will remember him. ★ ★ GWENDOLYN MARSHALL Punk's vivid coloring and sparkling eyes are most attractive. Her many friends speak well for her popularity. ★ ★ LOUISE MARSHALL She is a pleasant person. We will remember her good cooking always. ★ ★ THEODORE LAWRENCE MAXWELL, JR. Ted is friendly to all of us. He has a jovial manner that has won him many friends. ★ ★ MARY EMMA McDONALD Mary Emma is always considerate of others. She is well-loved. ★ ★ EDWARD LAWRENCE MELTON Ed loves basketball. He is small and fun to be with. His nickname is Buddy . Page Twenty-One Seniors DONALD McELVEEN Donald's character and ambition will keep him on top. His grades have always been good and his manners those of a gentleman. ★ ★ Robert McIntyre Bobby has been at H. H. S. only a short time, but he has made a lasting impression on all of us. He is sold on Oldsmobiles. ★ ★ HARRY VAN MILLS Harry does wood-working and reads a lot. He is a good square dancer. He is easily recognized by his careless walk. ★ ★ WILLIAM MIXON We shouldn't go so far as to call him lazy but he doesn't like to work. He is usually fishing. ★ ★ HAROLD WHITFIELD MOODY, JR. H. W. enjoys hunting and football. He is a great talker. He excels in craftsmanship. ★ ★ ROSAMOND NEWSOM A good musician and a bright senior, Rosamond is a likely prospect for a happy future. She is pretty and companionable. Page Twenty-Two fi I! ii i ii is HAROLD WYMAN NORTHCUTT Harold, always neatly dressed, is quiet and dark. His freckles are outstanding. ★ ★ JOHN C. NORTHCUTT John has a vivacious personality. His friends call him Chuck . He loves square dancing. ★ ★ DORA HAYES OATES Dora is unpredictable. Though she is carefree, she is thoughtful of others at the same time. It is a pleasure to be with her. ★ ★ HERBERT DEVONE OUTLAW Herbert's good looks and comical manner are well known around school. He has been a great asset to our football team and the Glee Club. ★ ★ J. C. OUTLAW J. C. is a whiz in shorthand. He has a happy smile and he loves a joke. MARY ELLEN PARNELL Mary Ellen is a quiet, peaceful girl, sandy haired and rather short. She has a pleasant disposition. Page Twenty-Three S n n i n r s ROBERT C. PARNELL Robert is os small as his nickname, Sprig, implies, and we all know good things come in small packages. You can always depend on Sprig's good nature to liven up the party. ★ ★ JOHN BARR POLSON Jay or J. B. , as he is known, can always be depended on. He is well dressed and always neat. J. B. has made a good record. ★ FRANCES JACQUELYN POOLE Our school beauty is a friendly, attractive girl. Jackie's hobby is eating, especially pear salad. ★ ★ MAURICE RAINES Rock's baseball playing is tops. He is good company at any gathering. ★ ★ JAMES WALTER RAINES Jimmy is short and usually busy. His mischievous way is a standing pass to any gathering. ★ ★ ROBERT LAVERN REAVES Bobby is liked by all. Working with wood is his hobby. He has a smile for everyone. Page Twenty-Four S I! n n r s ELIZABETH REEVES Elizabeth has worked hard and it has certainly paid off in A's. She is sweet and attractive. ★ ★ MARY ELLEN REGISTER Munk has an affinity for lavendar. Cooking and sewing are her pastimes. All of us have a strong affection for her. ★ ★ WILLIAM P. RIVERS William is a friendly boy with a pleasing personality. His favorite food is cocoanut pie. He likes sports. ★ ★ JOY ALEXANDER SHUMATE Dink enjoys rabbit and squirrel hunting, but doesn't care for fishing. He plays baseball well. It seems his favorite color is blonde — girls, that is. ★ ★ EDWARD S. SMALL Ed, who is military minded, seems to prefer the marines. Ed plays football and likes to sing. ★ ★ K. C. SMITH Casey has an attractive personality of his own. He is original enough to have 13 as a lucky number. We know it has brought him and us much luck in our football scores. Page Twenty-Five Seniors LAWRENCE BENJAMIN STOGNER, III Everyone is fond of L. B. He is pleasant company, easy to get along with. ★ ★ BOBBY GENE STOKES Bobby's freckled face and flaming hair have earned him the affectionate name of Red among his mates on the football field. Likes his girls short. ★ ★ ALENE VIOLET STRICKLAND Alene is a nice, friendly girl. She is very sweet. She can be depended on. ★ ★ WILLIAM RAY STUCKEY Billy Ray is serious and earnest, but he constantly surprises us with witty remarks. He is a hard worker and an intelligent student. ★ ★ RAYMOND NELSON SUGGS Raymond is one of our better baseball and basketball players. He is shy and quiet. Raymond has been a very good student. ★ ★ JOYCE SULLIVAN Joyce is a good-looking brunette. She likes jewelry, especially bracelets. She is interested in clothes. Consideration of others is her most valuable trait. ★ MARY UNEEDA TOLSON Her sweet smile and her quiet ways are her chief characteristics. Uneeda is always willing to help out. ★ ★ RANDOLPH F. VALENTINE Randolph is manager of the football team. He loves to travel. Horse is the nickname they've pinned on him. ★ ★ CHARLES VAUGHAN Charles has the distinction of being the tallest in the class of 1950. He is very popular and keeps us all laughing. ★ ★ RUDOLF A. VESELAK Old Bean is an outdoor man. He spends most of his time hunting and fishing. His appetite is tremendous! ★ ★ OLLIE VINCENT Ollie is always neat and carefully dressed. Jo is too ambitious to enjoy doing nothing. ★ ★ RALPH CURTISS WASE Ralph is noted for his politeness. Though more often seen than heard, he is pleasant company. ★ ★ LEOLA ANNIE WEATHERFORD Leola has blonde hair. Her composed and pleasing manner has added a great deal to our graduating class. ★ ★ LENORA WIGGINS ( Mrs. ) She is easy to get along with. Her temper never gets the best of her and she is seldom sad. Lee gets her exercise by skating. ★ ★ MARY MARGARET WILMETH If it's honest advice, sparkling wit, a good time, or understanding affection that you're seeking, look for Mary and you'll have them all. She loves animals and rides horseback. ★ ★ BETTY DRU WILLIAMS A majorette in the band and a lively member of the Glee Club, Dru is very well known around H. H. S. She is dainty and cheerful. DOZIER Grady may always be found drawing or eating. Because of his large size, Grady has made us a dependable football player. He has a very amusing personality. ★ ★ MARY JANE WOOD Mary Jane has made an immense contribution to her Alma Mater through her artistic talent. She is a fine sport and a true friend.
