Page Four CURRICULUM ALMA MATER When impulse only was our guide. We looked to nothing else but tried To do the tasks that came to hand Without thy aid: nor yet we planned To make our purposes confine Themselves to aims mature, divine. 'Twas then we came within thy fold. To learn of thee, thy truth behold. Refrain O Alma Mater. Mother dear. Thy name we love, adore, revere. Revere, adore, we love thy name, O Hartsville High always the same In constancy and purpose clear, O Alma Mater, Mother dear. Along the years we learned the more Thy name to love: for thou before The form the substance held to be Of truth the very verity, And honor, virtue, duty are. Should always be. our guiding star. 'Tis now we see with gratitude. How wise thou art, how true, how good. We cheer thy name, we sing thy praise. And laud thy graces all our days. For faith and hope and love and truth Are taught by thee to all thy youth. O fairest Mother, kind and true. We carol this our song to you, And pray that as the years go by Thy greatness grows, O Hartsville High. —J. C. HUNGERP1LLER. Principal. Page Five FACULTY Mr. W. Arthur Smith A.B.. Page Twenty FROM THE CLASS NIGHT PROGRAM CLASS HISTORY As our senior year draws to a close we look forward with anticipation to graduation. We do not experience happiness when we think of our school years ending in so short a time. We think of the friends we leave behind and of the teachers who have so ably guided us through the years we have been in school. As the day of graduation dawns, our minds go back to our first year in high school. We graduated from grammar school in 1940 with an enrollment of 145 pupils, the largest graduating class ever to graduate from the grammar school. This class was also the third largest class in the history of Harts-ville High School. During our freshman year we started on a field of study that was to last four years and prepare us for the day we would start out for ourselves. During this year our officers were Gregg Tedder, president; Pressly Coker, vice-president: Jean Crawford, secretary: and Kathrine Segars, treasurer. In 1941 we became Silly Sophs” and were we proud! This marked a most notable event in our national history. Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japs and we were at war with Japan. Faculty members and students left school to go into the armed forces. Our officers for the sophomore class were Pressly Coker, president; Claire Jones, vice-president; Peggy Sing, secretary: and Ethel Cook, treasurer. At the beginning of our junior year we looked forward to Physical Education set forth by the government as a body building program. In all of the war drives we have been asked to take part in we have tried to meet our quota and if possible, top it. Among these were the scrap iron drive and the bond drive. Our officers for this year were not elected until the end of the year and were chosen to serve through our senior year. They are as follows: Keith Flowers, president: Pressly Coker, vice-president; Clara Ingram, secretary: Claire Jones, treasurer. Pressley Coker withdrew from school and Jean Crawford was elected vice-president. We now enter the eleventh grade as dignified seniors feeling a little superior to the lower grades. This senior class has gone out for athletics in a whole-hearted manner. Our football team this year, coached by J. B. Harvin. was backed to the limit by the senior class, student body, and faculty. A large number of boys in our graduating class will go into some branch of the armed forces immediately after graduation. The student body and faculty feel every regret that Dr. Thornwell is leaving us at the end of this school year. Our best wishes go with Floyd Parker who graduated early to go into the Navy. We have come a long way since we entered Hartsville High in 1941, but we feel sure that we will be able to cope with any obstacles that may be in our path towards real happiness and success. Jim Stuckey, Class Historian, '44. CLASS POEM The members of the Class of ’44 Are ready to explore another world: The days of youth, alas, shall be no more, No more are we the carefree boy and girl. Regretfully we leave the shores of sweet content Whre few have been the rocks and crags of strife; But many are the happy days there spent.— Memories we’ll cherish all our life. Reluctantly we bid these shores farewell. We part and board the waiting ships. Whose distant port not one of us can tell. For this is sealed behind the Captain's lips. Uncertain is the Sea of th’ Future far; But we are confident that we’ll come through With Christ our Captain and our guiding Star To lead us. help us, in whate'er we do. Joan Malone, Louise Mottershead. THE VICTORY CORPS (1943-1944) No war has ever yet been fought successfully without the cooperation of the people on the home front. Realizing this. and. therefore. the need for home front organizations reaching almost every person in America, our government has been urging the high schools all over the nation to organize for Victory. And so it was that the ‘‘Hartsville High School Victory Corps” came into being. This “Victory Corps” faced many seeming obstacles among which were the lack of existing organizations, the distrust of many students. who believed that it could compel them to do things against their will, and the almost complete lack of precedent. Many of these, however, proved to be blessings in disguise. Having no existing organization around which to build, it developed on a unique plan. It was divided into three large groups or companies representing the general classifications of work ( Morale, Community Services, and National Services). These in turn were subdivided into squads of those best qualified for special types of work (public speaking, posters and charts, salvage, bonds and stamps, etc.). The groups were to be scored on a merit system with various numbers of points for various duties. Also it was decided that, since flexibility was needed, any person might help work in or for any other group and get the points for his own. Though it has been unable to do all the things hoped for at first the Corps has helped in many war-time activities. It sponsored the Third and Fourth War Loan drives in the school, the blood plasma fund, the United War Fund drive. It has collected waste paper and scrap metal. In addition to these general activities some of the members of the various groups have sold war bonds and stamps, made posters and graphs showing the progress of the drives, made talks, produced a play over the school speaking system, and have done any number of other useful jobs. Having realized, however, its inability to do all the work facing it, the “Victory Corps” did only the more urgent things and concentrated on forming a solid center, or nucleus, around which to build a still more active Corps in the future. It is the hope of the “Hartsville High School Victory Corps” that, in the years to come, before victory is ours, the corps will become more and more active until every member has the opportunity of serving his country in some way through it.
