OKGANLZATEOHS: DRAMA NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY The Hartsville Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society was first established in the year 1935- 36. Ours is the 219th chapter. The organization has for its purpose: the creation of enthusiasm for superior scholarship: the stimulation of a desire to serve faithfully one's school, community, and country: the promotion of trustworthy leadership and loyal student citizenship: and the development of exemplary qualities of character in the students. Membership in this chapter is based on scholarship, service, leadership and citizenship, and character. A member s cumulative high school scholastic average must equal or exceed 90.75. To be eligible for election a student must also be a member of the freshman or sophomore class and he must have finished the seventh grade at the Hartsville Grammar School and one semester at the Hartsville High School or he must have attended the Hartsville High School three semesters. A freshman or sophomore who has met all requirements for membership in the society with the exception of having attended the Hartsville City Schools the prescribed period of time is announced publicly the pledge of the organization until sufficient time has elapsed to warrant him full membership. Once elected to membership in the society, a student who maintains the standards of the organization, retains his membership throughout his junior and senior years. The emblem of the National Junior Honor Society is a torch. Each member of the society is entitled to wear this emblem. The National Junior Honor Society carries out many useful projects in our school. A com mittee is appointed each year to draw up the chart of school officers for the year. This chart is hung in the front hall so that it may be used easily for reference. At the opening of school a group of National Junior Honor Society members serve on the freshman orientation com mittee a part of whose duty is to show the freshmen about the building. The members of this organization also post on the blackboard in the library a calendar of school activities for the short period each day. The publishing of Hartsville Highways is probably the most important project of this organization. Hartsville High Ways is a hand book which was published for the first time in the year 1936 37. In this hand book every feature of the life in or about the Hartsville High School is explained, and drawings arc used for illustration. A copy of Hartsville High Ways is given, not sold, to every member of the high school. The money that made this first issue of the publication possible was taken from the profits made at The Green Counter. The Green Counter is operated by members of the National Junior Honor Society for the purpose of furnishing paper, pencils and notebooks to students who wish to buy them at school. The Counter is open during every period of the school day and also before school starts in the morning. The Society has a minimum of four regular meetings each year. Three of these are dedicated to the transaction of necessary business such as: holding elections, making appointments, and hearing committee reports. The meeting which is held annually near the beginning of second semester is open to the entire student body and friends. At this open meeting the newly elected members of the National Junior Honor Society are. with appropriate dignity, installed in the organization. Every girl in high school is automatically made a member upon entering high school. The purpose of this organization is to create a more friendly feeling among the girls; to give the girls an opportunity to organize and conduct their own meetings: and to aid each in choosing her vocation. It has been customary for the last several years' programs to include talks by accomplished professionals to aid the girl students in choosing a vocation. One of the projects of the All Girls’ League is the operation of a Lost and Found Bureau. The feature of one of our programs this year was a speech made on the American National Junior Red Cross. One object of the organization is to foster and encourage a closer spirit of co-operation and good fellowshsip among the boys of the Harts-ville High School. Another object is to train its members in parliamentary procedure and public speaking. During the year, many interesting speeches are enjoyed at the meetings, and occasionally a debate on some up-to-the-minute subject gives an added interest. Aeneid, Book V. Line 231 One of the oldest clubs in the high school, the Carrollum Forum, organized in 19 24. has during the past year shown itself among the youngest and most progressive in new plans, projects, and services to the school. Its aims: to stimulate and increase interest in the Latin language among students of the high school, to lead younger pupils into the paths of culture and attainment which Latin affords, and to awaken the people of Hartsville to the real value of Latin—have always been kept in mind in the selection of new activities, and through these activities the organization has successfully achieved its purposes. Its membership is composed of all members of the junior and senior Latin classes and a limited number of sophomores who are judged on their merit. The club holds eight meetings during the school term. These are devoted to student discussions. talks by well known lecturers, initiation exercises. Latin plays. Latin games and various other activities. In addition to these meetings, the Club gave a tea for the Freshman Latin students in September, to acquaint them with the Latin department of the high school. Each year the Club climaxes its yearly activities with the Roman Banquet, one of the brightest spots on the high school calendar. Last year the banquet was unusually good. The members and guests assembled in the study hall at 7:30 P.M.. marching promptly at 8:00 o’clock to the gymnasium while The Rhythm Rascals. Hartsville High’s senior orchestra, furnished the music for the evening. The gymnasium, entirely lighted by candles, was decorated in true Roman style. The fragrant fumes of incense curled from the tables and gradually disappeared into the air among the flowers. Tables, placed according to the scheme of one of Rome's most noted society leaders, stood almost surrounded by couches. Guests and members seated themselves according to place cards previously arranged. The banquet swung into action with the invocation to Jupiter, pronounced by President Lee M. Wiggins. The presiding officer then summoned the slaves with perfume water for washing the hands. Then the food was served in courses announced by the president. No food was honored with a place on the menu that was not used by the Romans. After this was completed, the event of the evening—Dr. R. V. D. Magoffin. Head of Classics at N. Y. University, delivered his annual address to the Latin club and guests. Dr. Magoffin spoke on “The Life and Customs of the Romans. The lecture was made even more interesting by slides illustrating the topic. By the applause accorded him. we may be sure that his talk was enjoyed by everyone present. Among the special projects of the Club this year has been the sponsoring of new Latin Clubs throughout the state. Through its aid organizations have been founded in Allendale. Mullins. Conway, and North Charleston: Mullins has already given a Roman banquet similar to ours. Another project was the preparation of the preliminary Latin examination for the State High School League contests. The entire Senior Latin class participated in this work. In this way. not only star athletes, but any girl sufficiently interested can have a share in the games. Basketball, tennis, and horseshoes, along with soccer, baseball, and clogging which were introduced last year, furnish a wide field of sports from which a girl may choose her favorites. A girl is given a number of sport points for each sport in which she is active, and having acquired thirty points, she is awarded a red and white emblem. After a girl has won an emblem, she may win an arm bar for every fifteen additional points. The sports are divided as follows: (1) Major class sports: soccer, basketball and baseball. 1 he managers for each of these sports are: soccer, Margaret Gardner: basketball. Geraldine Denny and Jacqueline Everington: baseball. Eleanor Segars. (2) Minor individual sports: horseshoes. Selma Stogner: tennis. Ann Stewart. Making a class team in a major sport gives five sport points credit, a varsity giving two extra points. Taking part in an individual sport gives three sport points credit, an individual championship giving two extra points. The main objective of this association is to arouse interest in sports by making it possible for any girl sufficiently interested and willing to put forth the effort to get a letter regardless of whether or not she is a star athlete. The basketball team scores for this season are: Hartsville 14 Florence 20 Hartsville 35 Orangeburg 36 Hartsville . 31 Orangeburg 43 Hartsville 20 Florence ...... ... 17 Page Fifty-eight DRAMff- FOOTBALL The 1936 Red Foxes, although light and inexperienced, enjoyed a very successful season under the tutelage of the new coach, R. R. Kissam. and Assistant Coach J. B. Compton. Faced with a hard schedule the Foxes' effective passing enabled them to be victorious in four games, losing three and tying two. The Foxes placed James Parker and Cecil Spires on the Pee Dee Conference team. Parker was outstanding as a pass receiving end. while Spires stood out as a potent ball-carrying halfback. Others who played well were Captain Ed. Langston, speedy blocking back: Harold Young, passer: Ingram and Segars, stalwart guards: Barbie, a consistent center, and J. D. Askins. a defensive end. An average of twenty-five boys played in every game. 1 he prospects for the 1937 season are bright with most of the boys returning. However, such boys as Durrett. Powell. Langston. Winburn. and Pennington will be hard to replace.
