With characteristic enthusiasm the initial group ruled that this was to be a society with definite and constructive activities. Therefore, each spring for three successive years a part of one meeting of the Junior Honor Society was dedicated to committee reports on suggested projects. As an outgrowth of these suggestions the society has come to make a number of progressive contributions to the life of the school. In 1933- 34 the chart of school officers was first drawn and hung in the front hall. Every year since then the chart has been renewed after the election of new officers. The spring of 193 3- 34 saw a Junior Honor Society committee work out our first freshman handbill. It was a mimeographed leaflet of two pages to be distributed to new students at the opening of school. The succeeding year 1934-'35 this leaflet was expanded to three pages. Now a plan is underway ro publish for next year a printed handbook which will contain information valuable to upperclassmen as well as to new students. Along with the handbill project was developed the Freshman Orientation Committee. This group of Junior Honor Society members gives personal assistance to the freshmen during their first days of school. The first such committee was appointed for the year 1934 ’35. The project was repeated this year and will be continued indefinitely in the future. In the fall of 1934- 35 the Junior Honor Society first undertook to provide pencils and paper for students who wished to buy them at school. Those in charge of this brought the pencils and paper into the front of the study hall where they were sold before school. During the two years of its existence this business has acquired a stand. THE GREEN COUNTER: a stock room in the auditorium, and a bank account which permits the Junior Honor Society to pay the expenses of projects which it undertakes. Also. THE GREEN COUNTER is now open every period during the school day and it has increased the variety of its supplies. During the year 1935-’36 the society has added to its activities two new projects. Its members have made themselves responsible for operating the Freshman Library and for keeping posted on the blackboard in the study hall a calendar of school activities for the short period each day. Throughout the three years of its history the Junior Honor Society has held fast to the ideals of scholarship, leadership, character, and service which were the standards set for it by the Student Council and the Faculty Advisory Committee. The organization has drawn up its constitution and adopted its pin. a small gold block H. February 26. 1936 the three-year-old Junior Honor Society of the Hartsvillc High School voted to affiliate itself with the national organization of junior honor societies. It sent in its application for membership and in March received a most kindly welcome as the Hartsville Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. This year and succeeding years elections will be to the National Junior Honor Society. The local organization thus gradually will be superseded by the national organization. The National Junior Honor Society receives from the Junior Honor Society its spirit, its purposes, its projects, and some of its members. Ours is the 219th chapter. The national society is only about seven years old. It was founded by authority of the Executive Committee of the Department of Secondary-School Principals in answer to a demand for the national organization of local junior honor societies. The organization has for its purpose: the creation of enthusiasm for superior scholarship: the stimulation of a desire to serve faithfully one's school, community, and country: the promotion of trustworthy leadership and loyal student citizenship: and the development of exemplary qualities of character in the students. Membership in this chapter is based on scholarship, service, leadership and citizenship, and character. A member's cumulative high school scholastic average must equal or exceed 90.75. To be eligible for election a student must also be a member of the freshman or sophomore class and he must have finished the seventh grade at the Hartsville Grammar School and one semester at the Hartsville High School or he must have attended the Hartsville High School three semesters. A freshman or sophomore who has met all requirements for membership in the society with the exception of having attended the Hartsvillc City Schools the prescribed period of time is announced publicly the pledge of the organization until sufficient time has elapsed to warrant him full membership. Once elected to membership in the society, a student who maintains the standards of the organization, retains his membership throughout his junior and senior years. The emblem of the National Junior Honor Society is a torch. Each member of the society is entitled to wear this emblem. In the year 1935- 36. the Hartsville Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society has been brought into existence: its constitution has been drawn up: and its first members elected. The organization looks forward with confidence to a bright future in which it develops its contributions to the Hartsville High School and thereby stimulates and attains its own growth. Page Thirty-seven RETROSPECT THE GARROLLUM FORUM “Possunt Quia Posse Vidcntur” Vergil, Aeneid, Book V, Line 231 The oldest club in the High School, the Carroll urn Forum, organized in 1924, has during the | ast year shown itself to he among the youngest and most progressive in new plans, projects, and services to the school. Its aims—to stimulate and increase interest in the Latin language among the students of the High School, to lead younger pupils into the paths of culture ami attainment which Latin affords, ami to awaken the people of Hartsville to the real values of Latin have aw ays been kept in mind in the selection of new activities, and through these activites the organization has successfully achieved its purposes. The chief outlet for our projects is in our meetings, eight of which were held during the year. Our pre-Christmas season consisted of three meetings, one at Hallowe'en, another at Thanksgiving, and the culmination of our activities for 1935 in our meeting on December X, in celebration of the last day of the Horatianum Bimillcnium, which had been observed all over the world during the year. Main features of the program were a speech on Horace by our president, a play a! out Horace's early life, a reading of some of Horace’s Odes by Dean R. W. Durrctt of Coker College, and a selection from Horace, Integer Vitae, by the Boys’ Glee Club of the High School. The Carrollum Forum was honored to have Dr. Hubert Poteat of Wake Forest College visit it in January and deliver an address, the subject of which was “The Death of the Roman Republic.” Dr. Poteat is head of the Latin Department at Wake Forest, and is a most interesting and charming s| eaker. Our next meeting, the occasion of the initiation of our new members, was a scene of much merriment. The program opened with a speech by Miss Mary Taylor of Coker College on Modern Rome and Roman Festivals. Following this, the candidates for admission to the Carrollum Forum were put through their paces in the true Roman style, ami some of their actions caused much laughter among the older members. Our most recent Roman banquet, the grand climax of the Carrollum Forum program for the year, was held on May 17, 1935. President J. T. Alford, toga-clad, welcomed the guests into the study hall, and at 8:30 he led the procession over to the gymnasium, which had l cen decorated with highly ( olished tables, flowers, candles, and couches, in the manner of the Romans. The President invoked the favor of almighty Jupiter and requested the augurs to take the auspices. Two pigeons flew forth, ami the omens were declared favorable. As the program was in honor of Horace, Dean R. W. Durrctt made a talk on Horace’s Life and Works. There followed several musical selections, talks, original poems, ami plays interspersed between the courses of the meal, which was served by slaves. These attractions, ami especially the plays, created much interest and amusement. The President’s call for his sandals indicated the end of one of the most enjoyable banquets ever witnessed at the High School. One of the activities originated and sponsored by the Carrollum Forum this year is its Alumni Association. This auxiliary is composed of all former members of the Carrollum Forum who wish to join. Its purpose is to increase interest in Latin among the people of Hartsville, a pur|x se which fits in with our own aims. Many of the alumni have already joined, and the enrollment list is constantly growing. The Carrollum Forum sponsored in our school this year the National Book Week. All of our members read books and made reports on them in the various home rooms. We plan to conduct Latin Week also this year, during which time we shall give exhibits, have papers presented, demonstrate our work to our parents, and give a program at the grammar school. We plan for our Roman Banquet this spring to combine our two most important events of the year, the banquet itself and the annual visit of Dr. R. V. I). Magoffin, noted archtrolgoist, Head of Classics of New York University, and to present the largest ami most gala Roman festival in the history of our school. Our organization has in the past year experienced its most useful, most constructive, and most progressive year since its inception twelve years ago. Through new projects it has increased its prominence and importance in school life, and it has succeeded in vitalizing I.atin among its mentl ers as well as among all the students of High School. During the 1934-35 session, these plans as well as many more have been successfully carried out. The membership of the International Relations Club is composed of history students who have maintained a scholastic average worthy of recognition. The purpose of the club is to promote a keen interest in and appreciation of world affairs not only in the club but in the members of the student body. Every Monday during the chapel period the International Relations Club sponsors a speaker who gives a resume of world news for the period of a week. The International Relations Club also sponsored an open meeting with Dr. C. N. Sisson of Coker College as guest speaker. At their regular meetings the members of the club were fortunate in having Miss Laura E. Howard of the Coker College faculty and others as guest speakers. Although the International Relations Club is one of the newest organizations in the Hartsvillc High School, it has aroused the enthusiasm of the history students and student body and has greatly increased the interest in international affairs. The All Girls' League was organized in The Hartsville High School. Every girl in the high school is included in the membership. The purpose of this organization is to create a more friendly feeling among the girls: to give the girls an opportunity to organize and conduct their own meetings: to aid each in choosing her vocation. Much success has been obtained this year in carrying out these purposes. Especially have we emphasized the last. This year our programs have consisted of talks by accomplished professionals to aid girls in choosing a vocation. Among the speakers were Miss Katherine Edwards and Miss Victoria Allen, a former high school graduate. A most interesting project which was carried out this year was the formation of a Lost-and Found bureau which has proved to be a great aid to careless students. Also of great interest was the debate between the Boys' League and the Girls' League. The officers of The All Girls' League for 19 35-36 were: Mary Luther President KATHERINE Hines Vice-President FRANCES Dunlap . Secretary-Treasurer MARY Edna Blackman Student Council Member Miss Sarah PEGUES Sponsor THE ALL BOYS’ LEAGUE Charles Gibbes Tommy Cathcart Barney Timmons ........ Robert Durrett Jack Adams Mr. W. p. Crawford .............................President . . Vice-President ........................Secretary Treasurer Student Council Member Sponsor The All Boys' League is a comparatively young organization in the history of this school. The League is composed of every boy in the school and has two purposes: first, to train its members in public speaking: and second, to promote athletics in the school. The League has successfully carried out each of its projects during the past year. At every meeting we have speeches and debates by the members. The most important debate during the last school year was the debate between the Boys’ League and the Girls' League. In promoting athletics the Boys' League has continued the intramural contest started last year. This contest includes tag football, indoor baseball, track and tennis. This contest creates more interest among the boys than any other project of the school. Page Fifty-two rRETROSPECT Miss Sarah Phgues We, the members of the Senior Class, on behalf of the students of the Hartsville High School, dedicate this page of The RETROSPECT to Miss Sarah Pegues. We do this as an expression of our appreciation of her loyal and enthusiastic support of athletics in our high school and as an evidence of our gratitude for her help and her unselfish thoughtfulness of others. Miss Caroline Shaw .........................President ................. Vice-President ....................Secretary ................Treasurer Student Council Member .........Cheer Leader ............Sponsor The Girls’ Athletic Association has introduced three new games this year: soccer, baseball, and clogging. These, in addition to basketball, tennis, and horseshoes, furnish a wide field of sports from which a girl may choose her favorites. A new system has been worked out by which the girls receive points for participating in any kind of sport. When they earn the required number of points, they are awarded a block “H. The plan for awarding a block letter was worked out by a committee and was adopted by the Association. This plan makes it possible for a girl to obtain a letter in two years, pro- vided she takes an active part in sufficient sports to give her thirty sport points. The sports are divided as follows: (1) major class sports: soccer, basketball, baseball: (2) minor individual sports: horseshoes, tennis, clogging. Making a class team in a major sport gives five sport points credit, a varsity giving two extra points. Taking part in an individual sport gives three sport points credit, an individual championship giving two extra points. After a girl has made her letter, she is awarded a star for fifteen additional points and a crescent for thirty additional points. The main objective of the new plan is to arouse interest in sports by making it possible for any girl sufficiently interested and willing to put forth the effort to get a letter regardless of whether or not she is a star athlete. The Girls' Basketball team was very successful this year, winning eight out of ten games. Williams To Mr. Williams, who has coached the football team for two years, the girls' basketball team for one year, and the boys' basketball team for one year and who has severed his connection with school, we. the squads of 1935- 6 hereby express our appreciation of his faithful and efficient service. We assure Mr. Williams that he has our best wishes for success in his new field of work. The Red Foxes of 19} 5 enjoyed one of the best seasons in the history of athletics at the Hartsvillc High School. Competing with teams whose enrollment was considered above theirs, they bowed their heads in defeat only once and that by an unusually close score. This team again distinguished itself by winning the Pee Dee Conference title for the third consecutive year, placing seven men on the All Pee Dee Conference eleven. For the firsr time in the history of the High School the Red Foxes placed a man on the Charlotte Observer's All State eleven. This distinction goes to Albert Segars. tackle and brilliant kicker. Other members of the team who contributed enormously to the Red Foxes string of victories were Tommy Cathcart. a hard running, elusive halfback: George Nichols, line plung ing fullback deluxe: Monroe DeWitt. who paved the way to many a victory with his excellent blocking: James Fink. Ed Langston, and Harold Young, who came in for their share of the glory. In the line. Captain Billy DeWitt. ace tackle and possessed of a fighting heart: Fulton Parker, easily the most outstanding end in the history of the Hartsville High School: James Parker, excellent pass receiver: Jack Adams, always in the game and a most dependable tackle; W. T. Smith, the only freshman on the first eleven and all conference guard: John Roy Folsom, star center and only member of the team to play full time in every game. Seven of the members of this year's team are seniors. Next year's team may be lighter and less experienced but we know that these handicaps will be overcome by their fighting spirit and courage. The best of luck to next year's team and to the teams that follow. FOOTBALL SCORES The Red Foxes have enjoyed the most success- ful season they have ever hail, winning nine out of ten j{ames.
