ATHLETICS AND CLUBS

THE RETROSPECT New Developments At Hartsville High School, 1934-1935 The Student Council has been very busy this year. In addition to carrying on its usual duties, it has introduced many new features into the life of the school. Among the first of these was the News Reel, a weekly newspaper of the bulletin board variety. The news of every organization in school is reported through the News Reel by the Student Council members who act as reporters. There are timely editorials also. The crowds around the bulletin board which carries the News Reel articles prove the popularity of the paper.” The Student Council has issued a charter to the Home Economics Club which is affiliated with the national and state organizations of its kind. The girls of the Home Economics department make up the membership of this club and they have as their sponsor Miss Simmons. Home Economics instructor. The All Girls' League proposed and worked out a plan for a Girls’ Athletic Association. The Student Council granted a charter to this group which, under the leadership of Eugenia McAlpine. Chairman, and Miss Sarah Pegues. Sponsor, seeks to enlist the interest and co-operation of all high school girls in some form of athletics. The Hungerpiller Poetry Club. Mr. J. C. Hungerpiller. Sponsor, was granted a charter by the Student Council. The purpose of this club is to increase the study and writing of poetry and to inspire a deeper appreciation of it on the part of its members. Officers for this year are Betty Sing. President: Glorian Easterling. Vice-President: Trances McDonald. Secretary; Gladys Terrell. Treasurer. The Commercial Club. Miss Frances M. Anderson. Sponsor, on petition to the Student Council, was given a charter. The membership of this club is made up of the students of the Commercial Department of the High School. This year for the first time since 1 932 our school has an orchestra. A High School Band is also organizing. These two groups under the direction of Mr. W. Arthur Smith will be affiliated with the Boys’ Glee Club (also organized this year) and the Girls’ Glee Club. Miss Hannah Coker. Director. As The Greater Music Club they will petition the Student Council for a charter and ask for representation on the Student Council. The last club to obtain a charter from the Student Council this year was the International Relations Club which is composed of members from the history classes whose averages in class work were sufficiently good to merit membership in the organization. Five representatives from this group attended the meeting of the Model League Assembly at Winthrop College on April 13. They were J. T. Alford. Betty Sing. Katherine Hines. Lee Manning Wiggins, and Charles Gibbes. These students brought back much interesting information which will be helpful and inspiring in carrying on the work of the International Relations Club next year. The sponsors of this organization are Miss Helen Baker and Miss Adelaide Dunbar. As the 1935 RETROSPECT goes to press, rumors are heard about many new projects which the Student Council is planning to undertake next year. We look forward with keen interest to a realization of these plans. Page Twenty-four
