Every member of the student body belongs to the Student General Association which is governed by a constitution drawn up and ratified by the members of the association. The constitution provides that the management of the affairs of the Student General Association shall be in the hands of the Board of Control. The Board of Control consists of the Student Council, an Honor Court, and the Faculty Advisory Committee. These three groups are assisted by committees which are in charge of such activities as are entrusted to the students. The following students and faculty members served on the Board of Control during 1934-1935: STUDENT COUNCI1. CHARLES Jackson. Senior Class President. Chairman Flora Coker Mary Luther ....... I r THE RETROSPECT New Developments At Hartsville High School, 1934-1935 The Student Council has been very busy this year. In addition to carrying on its usual duties, it has introduced many new features into the life of the school. Among the first of these was the News Reel, a weekly newspaper of the bulletin board variety. The news of every organization in school is reported through the News Reel by the Student Council members who act as reporters. There are timely editorials also. The crowds around the bulletin board which carries the News Reel articles prove the popularity of the paper.” The Student Council has issued a charter to the Home Economics Club which is affiliated with the national and state organizations of its kind. The girls of the Home Economics department make up the membership of this club and they have as their sponsor Miss Simmons. Home Economics instructor. The All Girls' League proposed and worked out a plan for a Girls’ Athletic Association. The Student Council granted a charter to this group which, under the leadership of Eugenia McAlpine. Chairman, and Miss Sarah Pegues. Sponsor, seeks to enlist the interest and co-operation of all high school girls in some form of athletics. The Hungerpiller Poetry Club. Mr. J. C. Hungerpiller. Sponsor, was granted a charter by the Student Council. The purpose of this club is to increase the study and writing of poetry and to inspire a deeper appreciation of it on the part of its members. Officers for this year are Betty Sing. President: Glorian Easterling. Vice-President: Trances McDonald. Secretary; Gladys Terrell. Treasurer. The Commercial Club. Miss Frances M. Anderson. Sponsor, on petition to the Student Council, was given a charter. The membership of this club is made up of the students of the Commercial Department of the High School. This year for the first time since 1 932 our school has an orchestra. A High School Band is also organizing. These two groups under the direction of Mr. W. Arthur Smith will be affiliated with the Boys’ Glee Club (also organized this year) and the Girls’ Glee Club. Miss Hannah Coker. Director. As The Greater Music Club they will petition the Student Council for a charter and ask for representation on the Student Council. The last club to obtain a charter from the Student Council this year was the International Relations Club which is composed of members from the history classes whose averages in class work were sufficiently good to merit membership in the organization. Five representatives from this group attended the meeting of the Model League Assembly at Winthrop College on April 13. They were J. T. Alford. Betty Sing. Katherine Hines. Lee Manning Wiggins, and Charles Gibbes. These students brought back much interesting information which will be helpful and inspiring in carrying on the work of the International Relations Club next year. The sponsors of this organization are Miss Helen Baker and Miss Adelaide Dunbar. As the 1935 RETROSPECT goes to press, rumors are heard about many new projects which the Student Council is planning to undertake next year. We look forward with keen interest to a realization of these plans. THE RETROSPECT junior Honor Society The Junior Honor Society is one of the most active organizations in the Hartsville High School. It was founded March 14. 193 3. by the Student Council for the purpose of creating an enthusiasm for scholarship: of stimulating a desire for service: of promoting constructive leadership: and of developing character in the students of the High School. Election to this organization is both a recognition of attainment and a challenge to greater service and development. Membership in the Junior Honor Society comes through nominations made by the students and faculty and passed upon by the Student Council and the Faculty Advisory Committee. To be elected into the Society, a student must be a member of the Freshman or Sophomore class: but once having been elected, he continues to be a member though-out his Junior and Senior years The activities of the Junior Honor Society in the spring of 1933. consisted in organizing and electing officers. In the school year 193 3- 34 the Society adopted for its emblem a small golJ block ' H ”: it adopted a constitution: it designed and hung in the High School hall a chart showing the officers of the various school organizations: and it prepared a handbill contain ng information for the next year’s F reshmen. During the school year 1934-’35 the Society assisted in F:reshman Orientation in September and distributed the previously prepared handb.ils: it voted to continue these two activities next year: it voted to revise the chart: it established and successfully operated a stationery store, naming it The Green Counter ”: and it provided marshals for a Parent-Teacher Meeting. A big new project which the Junior Honor Society has under consideration for next year is the management of the Freshmen s special library.. Page Thirty-three 0 THE RETROSPECT 0 3Ssr The Carrollum Forum The Carrollum Forum is one of the oldest student organizations in the High School. It was established in the year 1924 by the Vergil Latin Class. Its membership is composed of all members of Junior and Senior Latin Classes and a limited number of Sophomores who arc judged on their merit. The organization was named in honor of our sponsor. Miss Ruth Carroll. It was organized for the purpose of creating enthusiasm for the study of Latin and to instill in the students of the High School, as well as the people of our community, the real worth and value of this language. We hold six meetings during the entire school term. Lour of these are devoted to student discussions, talks by outside men. initiation exercises. Latin plays. Latin games, and various other activities. Every meeting is a real get together'' in grand old Roman style. We actually live the lives of Romans for a moment and emerge Americans again. Our fifth meeting is that at which we sponsor the visit of Doctor R. V. D. Magoffin. Head of Classics in New York University and one of America s most distinguished archaeologists. He has been a regular visitor to our town for eight years past. We invite other South Carolina schools to this meeting and members of them crowd the drawingroom at Coker College where the meeting is held. Doctor Magoffin's afternoon address in February. 19 5. dealt with Recent Archaeological Discoveries.’’ The ensuing evening he spoke to a number of Hartsville citizens on Horace and His Contemporaries.'' All of his lectures are illustrated with slides which tend to make them more interesting. Doctor Magoffin is an unusual speaker and everyone enjoys his lectures thoroughly. He is in demand over the entire United States as a lecturer. We appreciate his visit and look forward each year to the day of his arrival. Our sixth meeting is the Annual Roman banquet which is staged in May of each year in the High School gymnasium. It occurs during the week which we celebrate as 'Latin Week in High School. This is a climax to our week of celebration. In May. 19 4. the biggest of our banquets took place. The gymnasium was entirely lighted by candles. Lounging chairs were placed here and there about the room. The smoke from incense burners curled in the air and gradually disappeared. President Bratton Davis was presiding. The meeting was opened by the prayer to Jupiter. Immediately following this Bratton Davis delivered an illustrated lecture to the audience of Latin students and guests. An interesting play was presented by a number of Latin students from the Junior and Freshman classes. This play was written and staged by a Sophomore Latin student. Lee Manning Wiggins. Now the finger bowls came. Then the food served in courses announced by the president. We honor no food on our menu that was not used by the Romans. The call for sandals and the crowd dispersed after experiencing the finest of our banquets. The Carrollum Forum makes every effort to interest students in Latin, the language that everyone should know because we. the members, realize what it really is and what benefits we will reap from it. Its activities tend toward the educational side of life. It endeavors to add to the intellectuality of the students and render the cause more attractive and more interesting. Like Caesar's army our organization functions in the best way possible. Through the ages it has endured the stumbling blocks, the obstructions, the pitfalls and yet it goes on. ever progressing, ever attaining, ever achieving and moving toward a bigger and better organization as the years go by. The membership consists of every girl in the high school. The purpose is to create a more friendly feeling among the girls: to give the girls an opportunity to organize and conduct their own meetings: to aid each in choosing her vocation. The programs throughout the year have contributed to this purpose. Several talks were given—Dr. Holmes and Mrs. Kalber were among the speakers—and the girls themselves have carried on many projects. The most interesting of these was the debate between the Boys' League and the Girls' League. The officers of the All Girls' League for 1934-1935 were: Flora Coker Glorian Easterling Victoria Allen Betty Sing Miss Helen Baker ...............President .................Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer Student Council Representative .........................Sponsor The All Boys’ League The All Boys' League is an organization composed of every boy in the high school. It was founded four years ago for two purposes: first, to train its members in public speaking: and second, to promote athletics in the school. During the past year the League has successfully carried out each of these projects. It has given a great number of its members speeches to deliver in chapel programs and in its own meetings. The League has also, this year, sponsored intra-mural athletics among the boys. In previous years the All Boys’ League has fallen into some disrepute because of its inactivity, but in the past year it has experienced a new awakening, and has risen to a prominent place among the most useful organizations in the hich school.
